CharityThis one serves as a breath of fresh air for Sony Corporation. The company has been hounded by bad publicity for a good number of months now. And anyone who had experience that will tell you it's suffocating. There would come a time when you wouldn't want to pay attention to it any longer and just go about your business. It seems that Sony is doing exactly that.

Sony just extended its helping hands by giving away 200 games with a retail value of over U.S. $ 5,000 to the charity foundation, Get-Well Gamers. The foundation is dedicated in bringing electronic entertainment to children's hospitals for over five years now. This project is to help alleviate patients' pain and suffering while confined and being treated.

Get-Well Gamers President Ryan Sharpe, in return, couldn't hide his joy and appreciation. "We are deeply grateful to the Sony Corporation for its wonderful generosity, especially with the holiday season upon us," said Sharpe. He comments that such acts definitely help sustain a public charity.

The California-based foundation is accepting all sorts of gaming entertainment, from consoles to handhelds and the different software they support. "That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to use the Sony donation as a shining example and not hesitate to give as well. No matter how small, every donation makes a difference," Sharpe announced. Interested gamers can contact them at the company's official site which you can visit by clicking on the 'Read' link.

 » US $5,000? That's news?

Bill Gates + Microsoft give hundreds of millions of dollars to charity each year. A retail value of US $5,000, Sony probably only pays US $500 for those 200 games to be produced. Lame news, this doesn't make them look good. I guess this board was just tired of posting bad news about them.

 » Hmm Microsoft

First off it's amazing someone is trying to put a happy face on a huge coporation like microsoft let alone saying Gates gives money from the bottom of his heart and not for tax reasons (most likely the reason why).

Also I see a difference between cutting a check and actually giving somebody an actual gift, and Sony actually gave them games. No I'm not saying their saints but yeesh don't bash them for doing a nice thing... jerk

Actually SONY only incurs a cost of $0.05 cents per game printed on disc!

i don't agree with the whole Lik-Sang thing (i think Lik-Sang was in the wrong, and got what they deserved), but that comment was friggin hilarious. it almost makes me feel bad for Lik-Sang. not (i'd vote for helping sick children over keeping an import site open anyday).

I Couldent give a toss about Sony.

Im just glad there is a charity using games to help people, who are undergoing som hardocre stuff.

Beleive me games really do help.

Had a mate with sunken chest, had to get his ribs bent fowards. He was totally fe'd up, and I lent him my GBA and he said it was the most enjoyable thing in the whole bloody hospital. It was a big moral booster, and improved his attidude and mood a helluvalot.
= a better recovery, and when undergoing treatment.

And Jack Thompson says games kill people :P

   by Haanz (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » Wow, how cheap.

Cheap way to try and get on peoples good sides again after all of the bad-bad publicity.

Meh, who cares? The charity and the people getting the games win, and that's what matters.

Still doesn't make up for what they did to Lik-Sang though. And it's pretty obvious it was done PURELY for the publcity. Almost like an ad-campaign. Sony cares.

Yeah right.

by Mr. Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » Pathetic

The only reason $ony is doing this is public relations. They couldn't give a sh*t about anybody less fortunate, this is just a business expense to them. $5,000 will not do sh*t, and the amount is comparable to a fraction of a cent for the average millionare. They will spend one billion to develop a processor for an overpriced rich man's console, but sick dying kids may get to play a $25 game if they're lucky. F*ck you $ony, anybody concerned with ethics will hate you. Didn't Bill Gates donate like 100 million to prevent the spread of aids? That's a real charitable donation.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-10-31
 » ...

A donation is a donation, no matter what intent it has behind it. I could say that any big company that gives a donation is just looking for some big publicity, but you can't even use this for Sony because they aren't trying to give millions of dollars. Like Ryan Sharp said, even the smallest donations help, and even if this brightened the face of just a couple of get-well gamers, it is more than worth it. Get a life and donate everything that you own before you start bashing someone else's donation...

Re: Mr. Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » I'm poor

I'm too poor to donate anything. Yeah even a small donation helps, but really is $5,000 (actually less because $ony can get games cheap) any kind of sacrafice on $ony's part? True, SOME people will be helped by this, but come on this is just pocket change for such a huge corporation. How much did they make by running Lik Sang into the ground? Then they lie about not being responsible. That's lawyers for ya.
   by Hm (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » .

Donation is a donation, but somehow considering the real reason for Sony "suddenly" donate ,000 is a question for me...

Yes, I ave to agree even the smallest donation helps, but if Sony donates because to make them look good after running Lik Sang down, I won't appreciate such donations then.
And ,000 for a huge cooperation, what a big donation, comparing to other huge cooperation like Mircosoft. Sure Sony might not have as much as Bill Gates does, but hey, that's only ,000. Why don't they give more, if they really want to get public attention? I doubt that's the best they can do.

All I see is Sony Fanboys.

"Yeah Sony, you're so good!"

Um. No.

$5,000 is nothing.

they are doing this only to gain their image again. All the fanboys jump on it and praise them, but normal people see right through it.

Even Mc Donalds donates more! Microsoft Donates more! Intel Donates more! HP donates more!

$5000 is a joke.

 » $5000 hahahaha

***** $ony, $5000 is nothing. All that really costs them is the production of the discs, thats it. I'm not a fan of Micro$oft either, they are also a very greedy corporation. They do this for the publicity. They even say the smallest donation counts. Do they really even care?
   by Malik (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » Not about the money

Think about it people, they aren't donating money, they don't need to. They are donatig games. If theygave out hundreds of thousads of dolalrs worth of games, the charity would be overflown with games. They would overdo it, use your brain sometimes before you blindly bash something. Didn't you know that some charities do not have the resources to deal with donations too large.

   Re: thebeeg - 2006-10-31
 » Agreed

you are right. a donation is a donation, and, as Malik pointed out the charity would be overflowing. You lot have to hate sony, even though they developed some of the best technology around: Ken helped develop the SNES and SNES2 (became ps1). Don't see you complaining about nintendo : they haven't donated anything!

 » THATS RETAIL VALUE

5000 in games is (assuming $50 a game) 100games.

a game+packaging is about 5-10 cents. so $10...

And I bet you they spend millions publicizing it. This is not news, get rid of this.

   Re: Gam3Guy (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » yep

The tobacco companies did the same thing. They donated 11 million dollars to the homeless and spend well over 200 million dollars advertising it. It's all about getting more people to like you.

they sue a lot of people for stupid reasons, then they put all those people on the ground and finnally not to look so bad they give what ? 200 games hahaha.....sony that is the main reason why i will keep my 1.5 psp and still use good old devhook...... hope booster is not dead....

I know the guy that does this. He visits the forums and frequently gets donations- its the www.somethingawful.com forums just so you know. He got something like 20 xbox's and gamecubes (each). Also, Sony gave him old sports titles, like NBA 2K. A LOT OF THEM. I know there are pictures of it out there, i just can't find them. Sony didn't give any good or recent titles though. Sad really.

   by Figboy - 2006-10-31

yeah, donate 400 million dollars to global warming, something that is still largely in debate as to it's authenticity (read Michael Crichton's "State of Fear," for a factual, and fascinating look about "global warming,"), or donating actual, solid, tangible hardware to children.

yeah, Sony is evil. no really, they are, but doing something like this is just nice. bottom line. whatever their alterior motives are, the children who will be playing these video games this holiday season while they recover from their ills won't be worrying about why they got a PS2 for Christmas, just that they have one.

all corporations are sinister. they all are in this business to make money, but that doesn't undermine a positive deed now and then.

i hate Microsoft, but Bill Gates is a philathropist, whether he's doing it for tax reasons or not.

helping our fellow man by doing a good deed or two is just right, even if you motives are to look good in the public's eye. the person you've done the good deed to probably won't complain.
