PS3 - Image 1While quite expected, it was still a downer when we learned that the European PS3 models will be having issues with backwards compatibility because they lack the "Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer" chip that powers the Sony.">PS2 slim model.

Online blog Three Speech was quick to contact Sony and inquired about the matter. Accordingly, Sony has been assessing the extent of backward compatibility and will continue to do so until launch.

Moreover, a site will be provided come March 23 so that fans will have an easier time checking whether their titles are compatible with the new console or not (click here).

After that, the company went on and clarified that the removal of the Emotion Engine will only impact PS2 games. PSOne titles, on the other hand, remains backward compatible. Sony explained further,

We will continue to offer firmware upgrades to increase the number of titles that are compatible, but rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.

"company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3"

That is why you are creating extra work for yourselves by having to make new firmware updates to do the job of the parts you removed, why don't they just tell us they are making the console cheaper for them to manufacture, at the expense of this funcitonality, thus us Europeans are paying more and getting less.

Sony may create a good emulation software and most PS2 games can playable. They don't show now a list of the playable games becose they're working to it.

» Perfect example of why Sony needs new PR

In Sony's answer to the question:

"The PS3 launching in Europe is every bit as powerful as the PS3s available currently in North America and Japan. PS3 is defined by key features such as the CELL broadband engine, its Blu-ray drive, the SIXAXIS Controller and its ability to output full 1080P HD game content which makes it an entertainment system for the future, without equal."

Once again, they reduce a feature they promised and give you something much less.

Sony had the perfect opportunity to say the truth and let it lie. We all know it's to save money. Just say, our box is expensive and this is to get costs down for us so we can continue to do business.

Instead they once again talk about their technology. To be honest, their technology has actually been their curse not their benefit. Let's look at this. THe Sixaxis is not a benefit. With lack of rumble it's a sour point for gamers. The full 1080p for gaming has turned out to be offered only in a few titles and framey at best. 720p is what most games are programmed for, so the 1080p thing has been an empty promise. Blu-ray only served to make their box cost $200 more than it needed to. Yes some love it but it's not really necessary for a gaming system. And finally, their Cell cpu only served to delay their system and make it more difficult to develop for. As far as I can see, Cell has given them no advantage over the cpu in the 360. Hell most cross platform games play BETTER on the Cell-less 360!

They say, the PS3 is defined by it's and then talk about technology instead of games. They need to remember it's actually NOT about technology or the fact that it's a movie player. It in fact has EVERYTHING to do about the games. Aren't they aware of this fact with how bad the Wii is cleaning their clock and why people are buying the 360 over the PS3?

Oh wait, I forgot, they bet the company on PS3 as a movie player...

 » Oh fritzilla

buddy dont be so negative! All the things you see as bad ones are pretty positive to me, they makes the PS3 stand apart the crow. Do you think that this very early game gen is the only the PS3 is going to see?, 1080p is becoming the resolution by default in all PS3 games, look at L.A.I.R, it is 1080p with beautiful graphics, I'm sure many more games will come at 1080p, only gives devels time to get used to the new technology.

CELL is an amazing tech, it even can work like a graphic card. Scientific reviews give to the CELL an very large edge over X360 CPU. IBM is showing devels how to tap the very power of this chip, I'm sure games will be getting more and more incredible as time pass.

BR is killing HD-DVD and it is a big plus to have it integrated in the PS3. I'm very happy SONY made this decision, from a mere gamer viewpoint BR is a future proof tech who gives in the long run much more space to work with. From the multimedia side, BR gives access to High Def content, it can not be bad, unless you are SONY/PS3 hater.
I dont know if you has hear about Black x360, if yes think about why MS needs this new model.

 » PS3s In The U.S.

I wonder what will happen to future firmware updates concerning the backward compatibility issue and will Sony sell PS3s in the U.S. with no EE chipset. I wonder if the updates will affect those of us who have the EE chip and keep us from the features already available. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough, and I hope its for the good of everybody.

slowly but surely the unis with the emotion engine will sellout in the US and be replaced with units without it.

Seeing as the code doesnt use the emotion engine it shouldn't conflict with ps3 models that do have it. Because the software isdesigned to run on a emotionless ps3. IN a year from now your emotionchip will just be rotting away in your ps3, never to beb used again by the newer firmwares.

Sony - Sony - Sony... When will you realise that you can only shaft your European customers so often? The days of your console dominance are short lived if you continue to treat your second largest market with such contempt.

I recentlt bough a pile of PS2 games and fully expected to play these on the PS3... Maybe not now.

The fact that some will work and some wont is not the issue, the point is that the arrogance of your current position treats us Europeans as second class citizens.. Still at least I can console myself with a free copy of Casino Royale!

 » wtf

Why would you buy a stack of ps2 games to play on the ps3 you idiot???
Don't any of you realize that sony is making TONS of money?? Did ya miss the articles about how it doesn't matter who is selling more consoles, sony is making the most money?? Pay attention kids!!!
So since they are making a TON of money, what reason would they have for pulling the emotion engine out of the ps3? Well, power savings, heat reduction, lower parts cost, might be one of those. And surely they have been working on the emulation for a long time, and must feel that it is sufficient to release now. Since EU customers complain like *****es about not getting the ps3 already, they can't push back the release to make all the ps2 games work... So guess what, you will get updates which include more working titles. And most of your big ps2 games will work from launch.

QUIT WHINING!!

And to fritzilla, Blu Ray kicks HD ASS. It's incredible. Since you suck, you don't have one. And if you really can't play on the sixaxis without rumble, get a life :)

"Why would you buy a stack of ps2 games to play on the ps3 you idiot???"

Maybe because he doesn't have a ps2 and is dieing for a chance to play the many gems the ps2 has?

the list of games for the ps3 is lower compared to every other console out there numb nuts.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-27
» Mr Common Sense is a Moron (Unregistered) IS A MORON!

Since the PS3 game selection sucks, many people want to play PS2 games on it. Usually playing old games on a newer system makes them look better like with the XBOX 360.
Also Mr. Dumbass using my name, the emotion engine isn't on when not used so power savings and heat reduction aren't an issue. The issue is, sony wants to give Europeans and soon everyone else less for the same amount of money. There is no price cut coming any time soon. This is all about recovering sony's losses on development.
"And surely they have been working on the emulation for a long time, and must feel that it is sufficient to release now."
Sony said PS1 emulation is working well (maybe because they sell PS1 games on the playstation network) but only a tiny fraction of PS2 games work now. GETTING MANY PS2 GAMES WORKING IS NOT A PRIORITY OF SONY! There will be a few updates to satisfy some naysayers, then it will be dropped and the PS3s with the emotion engine chip will have it locked out so even if you already have one you're getting screwed.
MARK MY WORDS. SONY IS VERY PREDICTABLE.

 » Okay....

First of all QJ bloggers need to stop writing the same article twice. You probably get paid for every blog but stop writing this article when you already have an article 2 down!

Anyways, I think it sucks that Europe has to pay more than the U.S and they don't have the PS2 chip in the system. I understand that this was temporarily and Sony was gonna move to software emulation but wasn't the reasons why PS3 costs a lot is because of the PS2 chip? So basically we got the better end of the deal where we pay $60 for an almost %100 BC when Europe has to wait for a firmware to come out. This is gonna piss of a lot of people.

 » what's the big deal?

The majority of PS2 games will still work, and those that don't will be fixed via firmware.

The EE was going to be dropped eventually anyways when Sony switched to emulation.

Chillax.

   Re: MGSROCKS1 (Unregistered) - 2007-02-26
 » You don't understand

They are pissed because they have to pay more than us even though we have a PS2 chip in our version while Europe's version doesn't.

so theres no ps2 hardware left in the ps3, why is it still 599 bucks??????????????

because it is WORTH $599 !!!

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-27
 » HUH?

I have an XBOX 360. Very comparable power (if not better) to PS3 with over 100 more games available and much better online.
I have a PC. Does everything a PC should with no restrictions. 1GB RAM, dual core processor, DVD burner, higher resolution, full GPU card access, better internet, all things the PS3 could only dream of.
Damn! No blu ray player. I can't watch the 30 shi*ty movies available in HD. Wahhh. I'll just play DVDs I already have upconverted to HD with the XBOX 360, or download the HD movies. If I want HD movies, I can always add that later instead of being forced to pay for it now.
To me, PS3 is worth only what it could sell for on Ebay, minus the inconveinence of getting rid of it. Hype is not worth $600.

 » horse*****

because it's worth $599, are *****in high? mr common sense? lol. when it gets released in the eu in march it is going to be £425 (basic package, meaning nothing with it), that is $850, does that seem fair to you, or worth it, my arsehole it is! my hard earned and saved cash waiting in the bank for the release of this bull***** console will now be spent on a 360 methinks!

does this ps2 hardware missing issue affect the jap or us ps3's, is it just the eu ones that have this problem. i hope for sony's sake that isnt the issue, as sales of this unit in the eu will be dire indeed. if they think that eu members will pay more money for less *****, they will be sadly *****ing mistaken.
being an avid sony fan since i first got my psone (i have ps2 and 2 psp's) this is a kick in the bollocks for people like me, i feel that sony will definitely be losing out because if they keep *****in about they will lose loyal customers left, right and centre. i for one wont buy another sony product until they offer me a fair deal. not some half arsed bull***** cast off!
i cant believe sony have tilted the scales and forced me over to microsoft, i hate them bastards even more! lol.
