xboxcoreMicrosoft (and perhaps Nintendo) must issue their own fact sheet in response to Sony's "Next-generation Console Comparison Fact Sheet" (issued along with the most recent press release on their launch titles that will be available on November 17). This is what we figured when we found out that the purported "fact sheet" reveals info on how much it'd cost to buy a  PS3, Xbox 360, or Wii system and what components you're "required" to buy.

Thing is, we're not sure if Sony has done some real fact-checking here: Nothing was hyped, but it was apparent they're doing the most subtle way they could to show everyone that a core Xbox 360 system isn't worth the purchase. Check out the Next-Gen Console Comparison Fact Sheet to get an idea of what we're talking about.

Xbox 360 Fact: Both the Xbox 360 Core System and the Premium edition can be bought at US$ 399 and they come with the basic components such as 20GB drive, the HD DVD drive, the wireless controller, and the Xbox Live Silver subscription. Also, the HD-DVD is not a requirement to play games, in pretty much the same way a memory unit or a hard drive is NOT necessary to use the Wi-Fi adapter.

Sony's Xbox 360 Fact: Adding up all the costs of the basic components, Xbox 360 costs US$ 698.

Nintendo's next-gen console wasn't spared either. Sony claims that the Wii's online access for the first six months would be free and the subsequent months would be offered for a fee. This obviously isn't true. It's the Wii browser that will cost consumers after the first six months. Besides, if you download the browser before June 2007, it's free. Nintendo is still mum on its online service costs up to this time.

the core x360 is worth nothing and the 20GB ps3 is more value than the premium x360.

how come sony doesnt mention that their system (atleast in japan) will not come with component cables to get an hd signal. how much will that cost. or the exclusion of an hdmi cable for 1080p. thats something sony been pushing from the get go but it doesnt come with one? ever check how much those run for and it'll add another 50(atmost or atleast) to a 600 total. plus they dont add in the fact that companies ( my guess ea) will have their own fee's for their own games to be played online. also that a wireless 360 controller is $40 while the ps3's will be $50. to me its crazy how a huge company can make such a huge one sided Comparison.

How much will that cost? Well don't buy em at BestBuy it will cost you $20+ go online im sure you can find a set of just about anything for $10 after shipping. Peanuts...... it wont cost anything

» THERES SOME INNACURACIES IN THIS ARTICLE ASWELL AS SONYS FACT SHEET

oops caps lock on title sorry.

anyways this article states the xbox 260 comes with and hd dvd drive and a 10 gb hdd is incorrent. the core has no hdd and neither come with hd dvd drive.

a memory unit or hard drive is required to play quite a few games (splinter cell for example, and for backward compatability) the hdd or memory unit isnt technically required for the wifi but it whats the wifi gonna do you if you cant even download anything.

if you ad the price of the 360 the hddvd drive and the wifi and 1 extra wireless controller then the ps23 with 1 extra cont is cheaper. (even without the extra controller the ps3 is cheaper but i like to ad the cont cuz i thnik its important to have at leat two controllers.

You're right... it is the XBOX 260....

and you read the article wrong. They were saying "To match the PS3 hardware you need to buy these things" and they are right. If you want everything the PS3 has to offer it SMOKES M$' price. So... no, youre incorrect.

The one thing I did notice was that it said "You would have to buy a $50 wireless remote" for the MS core bundle. That however, would leave you with an extra remote.

 » Lost in Translation...

Sony's Marketting reps may have gotten the meaning and terminology across incorrectly.

Look at it this way:
PS3 comes with a new state of the art processor, CELL.
Microsoft does not.

Core360 has NO HD, base PS3 Does.
Prem360 has a 20GB HD, base PS3 has a 20GB HD
Core+Prem360 has no next gen DVD (HD/BR), Sonys Comes with BR.
Sonys Wireless controller costs more... and? Taking out rumble isnt that big of a deal, take into consideration the amount of battery power rumble uses, having it on descreases play time SIGNIFICANTLY. No rumble means sonys unit will last WAY longer, worth the $10 IMO, and it has tilt technology, last I checked 360 controller was a regular wireless with rumble...

360 is 399.99 add on the HD drive which I saw retailing for 199.99, oops were at 600, and thats as of TODAY. Now lets go BACK in time to when 360 was released... now do the math again... funny how 360 in the long run if you bought it last year just cost you quite a bit more to get still less than sony is giving you.

CELL processor, Blu Ray discs, compatability with PSP, wifi/bluetooth need I go on? If your comparing the systems in specs wise, ps3 wins. If your comparing value at launch, sony wins. If your comparing value today its pretty much even...

 » Too bad, bad kid

Using "state of the art" processors in a console in my openion would be risky business. Doesnt matter if Microsoft doesnt have it. Most people dont need a HD-DVD player and much rather keep the DVD. (Due to lack of HDTV owners) I could care less about the base unit, I keep forgetting that MS even has one. The controller doesnt only has regular wireless, its insane how usefull it is, I can walk outside whilst talking to someone on xbox live at the same time. Another thing: I dont see a single game I would enjoy buying, or I can get it for my xbox 360 with superior online play. I dont think that I am going to buy Sony's "bargain BluRay player"
And it seems that you forgot the fact that the PS3 doesnt COME with componant cables or HDMI cables. $30 for componant and $70 for HDMI. I dont have a Single product that uses Bluetooth. I dont need WiFi, I have the router right next to my 360, and if I needed to, I can bring it downstairs and hook it up to my computer via crossover cable and play on wireless lan... So Sir, I dont see your reasoning correctly. It has much grey area. :-|

 » WTF?

First of all: Tyler, what the hell are you talking about? How does your extremely juvenile and skewed view of Xbox 360 owners factor into...well, anything being discussed here? And I don't think QJ was using "such as" as an excuse to lie.

I'm not really sure what the article is talking about with the 360 (perhaps the writer was half-asleep); I doubt it was lying because there's no need to lie to get the point accross that Sony's full of crap. I'll give you the facts straight: the $299 core system comes with everything necessary to play: the system, AV and power cables, and a controller (wired controllers work perfectly so wireless controllers are not required). There's also plenty to download, and there's no cost to connect. Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are not all that expensive either, and are far from required. So in other words, you get everything you need for 300 bucks. I guess you need a game too, so you get everything you need for 360 bucks (weird coincidence, huh?). The $499 PS3 also comes with everything required to play, along with options you may or may not want (but you don't get a choice). You also need a game, so that comes to 560 bucks. Of course, Sony's making the cheaper version harder to find, so it's more likely to cost 660 bucks. Then there's the Wii, which also comes with everything you need along with some things you may or may not want but you don't get a choice, for $249. You DON'T need to buy a game, as one is included, so the total cost is 250 bucks. So here are the real prices for everything you need (I'm rounding prices)
Xbox 360
-Really: 300 (360 with game)
-Says Sony: 700 (760 with game)
PS3
-Really: 500 (560 with game)
-Most Likely: 600 (660 with game)
-Says Sony: 500 (560 with game)
Wii
-Really: 250 (same with game; 300 with second game of choice)
-Says Sony: 250 (same with game; 300 with second game of choice)

We can argue about which options are required to get the best experience out of the system, but that's not what Sony's listing. Sony's talking about how much you have to pay just to use the system, and the PS3 is the most expensive by a margin of 200 or 300 bucks.

I can't say I'm surprised. After all, here are some of the things we've heard from Sony:
1. "The PSP is outselling the DS."
2. "We don't care about our competitors."
3. "We were going to use a motion sensing controller long before Nintendo." (ok, I know that one is SLIGHTLY debatable, but if you want my reasoning that it's a lie, send me an email or something)
4. "Nobody cares that the PS3 is delayed in Europe."

I'm sure there's more but I'm tired. And please, nobody ask me why I can say Sony is lying but not QJ. For one, past evidence is present (see above). Also, QJ is a blog; that document is an official press release, and thus more goes into making sure it's "correct." Finally, the weirdness in this article doesn't even make sense in and of itself; the press release, while untrue, does make sense in its own context.

I'm actually surprised that Nintendo got off so easy. Perhaps Sony realized after the handheld sales comment that they can't get away with outright lies about Nintendo; otherwise, maybe the Wii's lack of focus on high technology, which Sony seems to believe makes it an inferior console (clearly not the case as never since the 8 bit days has the undebateably most powerful console ever won a console war), makes it impossible for Sony to make up "required" additions. Either way, coming from Sony regarding Nintendo, a lie about payment for internet access is nothing.

Microsoft and Nintendo need to stop taking this bull. Isn't this libel? If nothing else, it defames the character of Microsoft because it implies they're trying to be misleading about the Xbox 360's price. And I don't know much about business laws, but if such corporate dishonesty itself isn't illegal, I have a problem with that.

One last thing, directed at chief: When has Microsoft sent out a press release containing outright li

Re: Your an Idiot Gryff33 (Unregistered) - 2006-10-20
 » blah

If you ever factor in Nintendo again you need to be shot. Nintendo is the smatest company in this race. Why? Because they fooled everyone. Your paying 249.99 for a system with not even half the specs or lifetime of the ps3 or 360. If I asked you if youd pay 250 for a cube again you would say no, but the WII isnt that much more powerful than its predeccesor... LOL.

Now 360... oh boy love how you compare ps3 to 360 prices.
360 at launch vs ps3 at launch take a look moron, same prices.

And keep moaning that sony doesnt give you an option, they are giving you everything you will be required to use the system for its lifetime. Now while im sure MS is more than happy to play repeat of the closing gen (drive prices down to gain a name and market share) so that they can bring out yet another console in 3 years and try pushing sony out. Sony wants your console to last 6-8 years, MS wants you to buy another in 3.

oh and btw, check up on your own BS next time:
1. "The PSP is outselling the DS."
Funny because in Japan right now PSP is outselling it every month, in NA and UK psp trails by no less than 200,000 units. Oh and FYI when sony said PSP is outselling PSP if you look at the amount of Revenue PSP brings in vs DS, PSP is winning.

2. "We don't care about our competitors."
Take a look at this generations sales comparisons... Last time I checked Xbox and Nintendo combined didnt even make up HALF of sonys sales.. So why would they care? PS1 dominated the market as did PS2, no reason why PS3 shouldnt.

3. "We were going to use a motion sensing controller long before Nintendo." (ok, I know that one is SLIGHTLY debatable, but if you want my reasoning that it's a lie, send me an email or something)
Truth is here youll never know anyways.

4. "Nobody cares that the PS3 is delayed in Europe."
IMO were not even ready for the next gen I could have waited another 2 years while they fixed some stuff, MS is the one rushing to market.

Go SONY!

Here is some stats from japan for console sales.

October 9 - 15, 2006
Nintendo DS Lite - 104,487
PS2 - 24,727
PSP - 21,603
Game Boy Advance SP - 2,299
X360 - 1,743
Game Boy Micro - 1,714
GameCube - 653
Nintendo DS - 273
Game Boy Advance - 37
Xbox - 3

So the PSP is outselling the DS...how?

"Nintendo is the smatest company in this race."
Nice "Your an Idiot Gryff33". Well, there are many faults and grey areas in these statements. Last Time I checked, xbox at LEAST lasted 4 years. I have a console from 2001. Sony does do good on how long their systems last. (Or how long they want to run them untill they die)
PSP does not out sell DS in Japan and they do not get nearly the same revenue as the DS anyways. There were so many Sony sells, because everybody's PS1's and PS2's kept dying. :-| Usually when a person buys from sony early, they know they get a product that they would like. So They are stuck with sony and dont have any idea if the grass is truely greener on the other side. and People do seriously care for the delay in Europe, they do not need to wait 2 more years till they catch up, what are you trying to say? They are 2 years behind everyone else? I enjoy playing/owning all consoles, but PS3 doesnt have any games that are planned that look very appealing to me. :-/ So, you need to straighten your act out.

   Re: hush404 - 2006-10-21
 » it's not what's required to play

It's what's required to match features. Fact is, if you bought all of the accessories for the 360 to make it do everything a PS3 can then you're paying just as much if not more than what the premium PS3 costs.

If you were to look at each system's core package and compare them, sure you can play games on each but look more closly.

PS3 - 20GB HDD, X360 - None
PS3 - wireless controller, X360 - Nope, wired
PS3 - Next gen media drive (blu-ray), X360 - Nope, DVD only
PS3 - Free online, X360 - Nope

It's that simple.

Now you say that a wired controller works fine.. but would you not rather a wireless controller? especially since the system's premium package comes with one? Also, no harddrive, which again isn't needed for just playing games, but again wouldn't you like one? for downloads and storing media and other things? That works into online as well, sure $50 isn't much but if you wanted to buy purchase something, thats more money and you need somewhere to put it no? a HDD? or a memcard at the very least. Also, comes the day when you decide "Hey I want to move onto the next-gen media format", well in the PS3's case you get a device capable of playing blu-ray discs, the 360's best is DVD, with an expensive addon for HD-DVD.
AGAIN, this stuff is purely wants, it's stuff to make your enjoyment of the system that much better. Not every single person will want it all, but I would rather have it there incase someday I want something more from my machine than just basicallly playing games.

So it's not that PS3 doesn't give you a choice of what you want, it's that the 360 doesn't give you an option to want it, unless you fork over more cash.

I'm kind of starting to dislike Sony. I don't know what they wish to achieve with these lies, but I think it won't do them any good. Who is going to read these, except for the ones who know better?

I have liked Playstations, but now I'm thinking twice about supporting their creator.

Then again, Microsoft did do the same. I can remember their charts clearly: Giving _way_ too much attention to brandwith for one, of which the Xbox360 has more, of course. It almost seems to be part of this war to lie, which is a shame.

Yet Nintendo doesn't really seem to participate in this.. Perhaps because it's obvious that their console doesn't have the graphical strength of Sony and Microsoft, perhaps because their console will be a success anyway.

But does drag me to their side.

» Let me make this really simple

I can see my last post was too complex for some of the morons who try as hard as they can to support Sony in every act of bull***** it commits (particularly the person who called me a moron yet apparently believes "smatest" and "youd" are words), so I'll say it simply: LEARN ENGLISH. The press release says "requires users to buy." That's not a conditional statement; it doesn't say "requires users to buy in order to have a similar experience" or "requires users to buy if they want these features." It just says "requires users to buy" which means you need them no matter what. That's what "required" means unless another aspect of the statement is present, and it is not. Therefore, SONY LIED. They said "required," and the options are not required. Plain and simple. You can argue over what they meant, but it doesn't matter, because what they SAID was a lie. Either that, or nobody at Sony speaks English very well, and if the PS3 is being made by a company full of people like that, well, they're totally screwed.

I know someone else said this already, but I want to reiterate:
THE DS HAS SOLD MANY MORE UNITS WORLDWIDE THAN THE PSP, AND SO FAR, OF THE TWO, THERE'S ONLY TALK ABOUT THE PSP FAILING. Deal with that fact. The PSP is losing, and it always will.

And sony clearly cares about the competition otherwise they wouldn't have even bothered putting out that press release; whether you know they're lying or you're an idiot, that's a fact.

You cannot speak for the entire continent of Europe; even someone as stupid as you should realize that even if you don't care about the delay, other people do.

Now, let's say it's Bizarro world and Sony didn't rip off Nintendo. Whoever's in charge over there must be even stupider than you are, because even a baby could have predicted the backlash Sony got for making their announcement after Nintendo.

The problem with most of the reasoning I see here is that all of you are making the same assumption as Sony: that people care more about graphics than anything else. Proving that one system has better graphics than another doesn't prove it's a better system. Look at the facts: the Sega Genesis/Megadrive had better graphics than the SNES, but the SNES sold better. The Xbox had better graphics than the PS2, and the PS2 sold better. The PSP has better graphics than the DS, but the DS is selling better (no matter how much you try to deny it). The Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket, NeoGeo Pocket Color, Wonderswan, Wonderswan Color, etc. all had better graphics than whichever iteration of the Game Boy was available during the same time period, but the Game Boy always sold better. There are more examples; I don't have time to list them all. So far, only Nintendo seems to have realized that graphics don't make the game. Heck, regardless of whether you include games bundled with systems, the best selling game of all time is an 8-bit Mario game (Super Mario Brothers if you count bundled games, Super Mario Brothers 3 if you do not). The graphics on the NES were terrible by today's standards, yet not a single game has outsold those. I'll bet the stats for sales of consoles are similar, but I don't know them right now. The point is, if your only defense of the PS3 is that it has the best graphics, you don't have any defense at all. Let me close by giving you all a reminder about something: there's been more bad news about the PS3 so far than good news, and very little bad news about the other systems. No wonder Sony had to lie.

i tend to save my support and money for spending on companies that value their customer base. sony is not one of them. instead, they bank on the fact that many kids who grew up with final fantasy all their lives will shell out 700 bucks to play the next one. they target their competitors using cheap-shot advertising, statistical marketing, and stealing their ideas.

the way sony handled the homebrew scene (locking firmware) disgusted me, and their booths have never been more than an impressive CGI show. this may be indicative of a failing management and the lack of smart executive decisions. in my opinion, even if they sell well, their market is doomed to fail. why? nintendo knows how to run a business with satisfied customers. ask any DS owner, and you will know. pretty soon you can also ask any Wii owner.

i feel truly sorry for those whose only reply is "ps3 has better gfx" or those who argue with "fanboy" fingerpointing. if fanboys are a generation that arose out of wholesome, memorable, and innovative gaming experiences from console to portable to pc to mac, then call me one. ive tried every system. but if a "fanboy" is anything else to you, you're wasting your breath.

we are a generation of gamers who should be united across all consoles. sony and ms should learn from nintendo's business model of valuing the gamer experience instead of commercial hype, and misinformation. if they don't, the bottom line is this: they will not survive the next generation EVEN if they give birth to it.

pound for pound, the ps3 may be worth more than the wii. but so is a bar of gold. does that mean i would rather have a bar of gold on my tv than a wii? a worthy component does not guarantee a worthy gaming experience.

 » ps3 vs. x360

To star off, this is one of the most stupid arsticles i have ever read. SONY is claiming that you need a wireless controler to play a video game. Trust me you do not, if anything else it hinders your ability to play games, for example i was playing halo with my friends I had a wireless controler they had a wired controler, every time I tried to lunge at them with my sword they would get me first even if i pressed the button first, this happens becase the signal has to be converted from digital to analog on the controler, travel the distance between the controler and the console, lose signal strength, and then get converted back to analog. Wired controlers need no such process. Wireless controlers have a huge disadvantage because they need to be recharged, that is just a pain, I dont want to waste any more electricity than i already am and i am sick of my controlers dying in the middle of a game. Now to the Next-Gen drives, They just came out and noone has even thought about developing any games for them yet, i am willing to bet that SONY will not release a BR game in over 2 years simply because it would cost so much to make games that would utilize that space (gfx wise) as you can already see gameplay is constantly shortening due to the lack of funding. Taking this into account, Microsoft made a very smart decision to not release a console that included a technology that was widely untested and extremely expensive. Noone even knows which format will survive in the long run, so why include a formt that could die next year when you could wait until the techonology became more widespread and cheaper and release then when you can tell which technology will win. Wireless is just terrible, huge amounts of lag and very expensive, just google CAT-5 patch cables and buy yourself 100ft. for 10 bucks, and save on allot of frustration and money.
The xbox 360 will eventually win because it has taken every game SONY had exclusivity on and brought it on their console and many times even gained exclusivity. Sony has no titles, noone wants to code for their ustable and complicated CPU (Which can access its own internal cache slightly faster that an snes) with SONY's terrible toolsets.

 » The Three Little Systems...

There's no denying it, the systems gradually step up, and so do their prices. Ultimately when you look at the Wii, you get crap hardware for $250. When you look at the 360 you get good hardware for $400. And last, when you look at the PS3, you get the best next-gen stuff for $600.

It really just depends on what you want out of your system. No matter which system you get, ultimately you're paying for what you get, there's no denying it, the PS3 is in a lot of ways more powerful than the 360, and the 360 more powerful than the Wii. The only other thing to factor in at this point is what kind of gamer are you and how long do you want to wait for games to come out? The PS3 and Wii will have games out but they won't have nearly the selection of the 360. Just ask yourself if you want to wait or have the game now.

Personally I'm actually disappointed with the Wii because Nintendo said specifically that the Wii was going to cost less than $250 and they wern't going to focus on hardware like the 360 and PS3. Pretty much Nintendo is saying that they arn't going to focus on hardware because they're gonna put a bunch of CRAP hardware into it. As far as the $250 goes, I've always been under the impression that they meant a considerable amount below $250, not 1 cent($249.99). Because the Wii IS going to have crappy hardware and still cost a good amount of money, I find the 360 looking better and better every day.

Now, as far as the PS3 goes, you can piss and moan about the Blue Ray games not coming out for awhile, but the capability will still be there. As well as some of the better hardware the PS3 comes with. Of course, these things will also carry a heavier price tag, so as stated earlier, it's all about what you want out of your system and what price you wanna pay.

Lastly, the XBOX360 isn't a horrible system, yes it's Microsoft and everyone knows they wanna rule the world but so what? I'll say one good thing about Microsoft, they might cheat, they might steal, and might be underhanded and lousy, but they give you the stuff you want, at a price that isn't horrible, nuff said. The 360 is a good system, a nice compromise between the *****ty hardware of the Wii and the overpriced PS3.

As far as the online fees go for all systems, shut up about it already. The XBOX360 might originally charge you a fee, but let's be logical, you're going to be charged SOMETHING for going online on all systems no matter how safe you are. Even if you don't buy the new updates, web browsers, or anything else the online stores have to offer, these companies arn't dumb, they'll FORCE you to spend money on something eventually. Why not just pay the $50 XBOX Live fee and not worry so much every day about your console trying to charge you.
