Sony's PlayStation 3 sales rise by 178 percent - Image 1PlayStation 3 hardware sales have been picking up ever since the 40GB and 60GB bundles were released and prices were dropped for older models.

According to ChartTrack, sales of the console has spiked by 178% in the UK, making it the third biggest hardware sales week for the console.

The exact numbers for this rise were not released so we won't be able to say exactly how many units were sold. If this is a sign of things to come, the PlayStation 3 looks to be slowly gaining ground on its competitors.

Because of this sales spike, the games for the PlayStation 3 also saw a nice upturn in sales with Resistance: Fall of Man jumping up from 22 to 8, Heavenly Sword re-entering the charts at 14, and MotorStorm getting a nice boost from 23 to 18.

It looks like Sony's new PS3 marketing campaign and products are paying off. It now becomes a question of maintaining the same amount of interest from the gaming community in their future endeavors.

Thanks to Someone_PR for this hot tip!

Well the US had a rise of 135% after the 60GB price cut, and we all know how long that lasted.

   Re: ~~ - 2007-10-17

I don't see how both situation relate to eachother though.

   Re: Games4James - 2007-10-17
 » Eh?

@DVSDevise - This is still good news for the PS3, even if it is short lived. We'll have to wait and see how long it lasts. Don't be so negative about the PS3 all the time. :)

@~~ - In the US, the 60GB price cut came with the introduction of a new model (80GB) and the news that the 60GB model will be discountinued. In Europe, the 60GB price cut came with the introduction of a new model (40GB) and news that the 60GB model will be discountinued. In both cases, the sales of the 60GB model increased significantly in the first week or so.

Come now, can you really not see how both relate to each other? :)

"even MCS himself has lightened up"

Thanks to him finally buying a PS3 (he says it was by accident on EBay, but I don't think anyone believes that :D).

Drunken ebay impulse buying is the leading cause of PS3 purchases worldwide! 22% of all PS3 purchases occur this way.

mohaas05 your more than right about Devise.

As for Mister Common Sense I hope you get drunk enough to get Eye of Judgment.

   Re: ~~ - 2007-10-17

what exactly is so great about eye of judgement ?

I know, technicly its a great game, but gameplay-wise I'm not so sure about that. But it could be that I'm not all that big a fan of card games or Wizards of the Coast in general.

I was trying to say that the events of the 60GB price cut and 40GB introduction in Europe don't necessarily are going to follow the events of the US 60GB price cut and 80GB introduction;

In other words, because the sales boost didn't last too long in the US doesn't mean that the sales boost will die out just as quick in Europe.

   Re: Games4James - 2007-10-17
 » Fair enough ~~

You're right that nothing is guarenteed, but given the nature of the market together with what we've seen in the US already, I think it's highly likely that Europe will follow a similar sales pattern.

So if I were to place a bet, my money would go on this being a temporary (and welcome) sales spike for the PS3. :)

» Sony's finally getting with the program

This just proves how bad Sony's original business model was with the PS3. Not many people are going to buy a game console that cost double the price of its predecessor, with few launch games, especially when its main selling point is an unproven movie format in the midst of a new format war.

Now that the price is affordable and games are more plentiful, the PS3 will do much better and gain back market share.

   Re: Thinker - 2007-10-17
 » Agreed

On that, I can agree whole-heartedly. Sony, even though it does come up with some superlative hardware, does have some stuck-up snobbish idiots running its business. They should have taken the price hit from the start and concentrated on building a user-base. The problem is, all corporate executives have to justify or show an increase in profit annually to get a decent increase in pay or bonus or profit-sharing, which is why they ignore long-run strategies and go for such short-run idiocies. If their executives had had the b@l1s to pay attention to the big picture rather than next year's bonus, then this would not have happened.

On top of it, their PR sucked. So, even though, in my opinion, the PS3 is the best and most reliable hardware out there right now, it suffered because of a bad business model and bad PR.

I miss the old "Mister Common Sense"!!! LOL!!! It's just weird to see you say something like "PS3 will do much better and gain back market share"!

   Re: Manny151 - 2007-10-17
 » @ Thinker

You're wrong. They did take a hit from the beginning. You honestly think that Sony was making money of the PS3? They always take a hit at the beginning and a hefty one at that. Development cost are starting to drop on some of the components for the console and that's why you're seeing the current price drops. do you think they took out the Emotion Engine, the card reader and 2 USB ports out just to piss people off? No! they did it to cut cost, so that they can pass the savings down to their costumers and get a higher install base. Personally I don't care, I bought mine on launch and I upgraded the hard drive to 160GB so I don't have to worry about backwards compatibility or anything else getting removed from my console.

   Re: Thinker - 2007-10-17
 » To Manny

Of course I know Sony was taking a hit even at the start. For example, I know that the 60 GB model's production cost was somewhere around 820 dollars. The thing is, Sony was counting on more early adopters, which would have prompted more Developers to support the PS3 early on. However, they did not anticipate that the high price tag would make it seem out-of-range for many gamers, thus leading to less market share and less developer support. I'm sure sometime before launch, they must have brainstormed as to the price tag, but were not willing to go lower, otherwise come performance appraisal time, the executives would have suffered in addition to shareholders. So they kept it at what was to them a reasonably "low" price. But the PS3 was not as well-accepted, chiefly due to its price tag, and their strategies had to be modified several times around.

I'm not saying the PS3 was a money-maker. However, as with any business, to make money, you have to spend money, and Sony was not willing to spend (or in this case, lose on each machine) as much. You have to agree that a lower price tag at the beginning would have helped the PS3 quite a bit.

In addition, Sony's PR quite consistently misrepresented issues, ignoring what was actually causing the PS3 to sell less.

Forgive me for saying but I believe the current price for the 40Gb SKU will continue, ( at least here in the U.K. ) maybe untill their is another price reduction.....optimistic, I know, but their you are.

 » I hope it lasts.

Personally, I think the PS3's main competition is the PS2, with such a huge install base there was no way the PS3 was going to be an instant hit. Look how long the PS2 took to get where it is now.

As for the price issue, I can't help feeling that whatever price they initially pitched it at people would have complained that it was too expensive. I got my PS2 at launch, in a bundle, and that cost me £400 back then. When I got my PS3 at launch it cost me £480(ish) that too was part of a bundle.

Now I don't know about the rest of you, but my salary has increased a heck of a lot since the PS2, so as far as I'm concerened (as economists like to say...) in real terms the PS3 is cheaper than the PS2 was.

I just hope Sony can inspire shoppers into parting with their hard earned on their shiny / matt box.

One last thing, who else think the PS3 adverts stink? How can the Bravia ones be so good and the PS3/PSP ones so sh1te? I really wish Sony would advertise the games, make a big deal out of them, for goodness sakes, when the whole 'Church Vs Resistance FOM' issues was going on why weren't there adverts for the game on the telly?
