PS3It seems Sony has trademarked a new brand name at the Japanese patent office, apparently for a controller. And it's called..."P oo S". Not quite unlike the aftermath of the Wii announcement, the jokes are already rolling in and let's be frank, that's no surprise.

Are Sony hoping to follow and succeed with the strategy Nintendo has utilized? As their rivals, do they hope an at first alienating name will sooner or later become highly identifiable, or is this just another silly move for the sake of publicity being creative?

Regardless of that, the source states the "oo" part could be the infinity sign. Or it might represent the two analog sticks on a Dual Shock controller.

While it's doubtable "P oo S" will stir the media as heavily as Wii, Sony haters surely get another piece of meat to chew on with this. It seems we have to wait and see if the patent bears actual importance as the Playstation 3 launch draws near. Lots of things can still change...

 » yeah

I think, if anyhting, it would be pronounced POOOOOS, not poo's with a long oo sound as in ew or ooo ahh. not as in poo with an apostraphe s.

 » Oh man...

That is so lame, even I can think of a thousand other better names it could have.

-Grabity - yes, with "b" so you grab it and feel it
-e-nertia - "e" of excellent
-Siver Winder
-F-eel
-0rbit - with a zero

Ok, not so cool but you get my point

i just can't imagine that in the next console generation we are going to play with "wii" and "poos".

can you imagine telling someone out of the computer/game world (eg. your mum) something like:

"we're going home to play with my wii
and then we're going to his place to play with his poos"

hahahahahahahahahahaha

unbelievable

That sounds like a normal evening at R Kelly's house... but seriously both nintendo and sony need to be taught a lesson..wii is the stupidest name ever and i doubt sony would copy that(we have been wrong before) it is most likely a symbol of somekind. with the high price of the ps3 it needs the best name it can get not the worst... sony would be better off to market it as a type of computer rather than a video game system..that would create interest for older consumers.

 » infinity

i think it almost definetly translates to infintiy - how that can be added to the controller name i have no idea..

lets just hope sony can include vibraion to the controller; we can the revert to the name we have all come to know and love as the DualShock series :)

everywhere I look sony is making horrible decisions, and now this? i think sony is honestly trying to screw themselves on this one. you just cant defend that kind of name. this is like the 17th nail in the ps3's coffin.

» I'll play the role poor nintendo fanboys played when the Wii was announced

I don't think POOS is that bad of a name... come on guys it has a nice ring to it.

Haha, damn I can't keep a straight face.

But anyway this isn't an announcement and we don't even know if those two circles are Os so relax, I doubt we'll call this thing PooS here in the states or the UK or even Japan. This looks like it's probably the logo.

   by moose (Unregistered) - 2006-06-29
» Can sony get any lower?

It's most likely a logo.

I can understand the infinity part. It'll most likely be an extension of their PS branding. Y'know the vertical P with the isometric S underneath. OR it could be like the PSOne font (the really curvy font) but with infinity symbol inbetween the p and s to simulate the infinate possibilities with their rip off controller.

I can understand the logic but the name is utter rubbish!

I think the article was a misprint, its supposed to be p infinity symbol and s, lol.

 » Patent

I doubt there trying to copy wii or make another publicity stunt but try to patent the technology and shape/design of the controller so latter on down the road other consoles or other manufactures wont try to make a controller similiar to sony's.

For those of you thinking that it's a double o, your wrong... just looked into the source and found the following picture:

http://www.gfdata.de/archiv06-2006-gamefront/sonyp-oo-s.jpg

It definitely states that it is an infinity symbol or a a turned 8
