The Sony PlayStation 3 as seen from different angles - Image 1

Two words that can get customers excited are the words "new features." That's precisely what Sony has planned for the next system software update of its PlayStation 3 console - PS3 FW v2.20. According to Sony, the update will add Blu-ray Profile 2.0 - otherwise known as BD-LIVE.

Scheduled for a release date later during this month, BD-LIVE will lay the following new features on PS3 owners' laps:
  • A variety of downloadable content, including bonus scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to mobile phones, images, and more.
  • Interactive movie-based games that pit players sitting in the same room, or across the world and online, against each other.
  • "Resume play" that enables the PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc and DVD at the point where it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. (Note that the BD-J format disc isn't supported.)
  • "Audio Output Device," a new Remote Play setting, enables the PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
  • An enhanced PS3 Internet browser. Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's view speed will be improved.
  • DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
  • "Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback. (Likewise, the BD discs recorded with BDMV format aren't supported.)
  • Enhanced interoperability between the PS3 and the PSP. PS3 owners may copy music and photo playlists onto their PSP Memory Stick and enjoy the files on the go.
Sony said that BD Profile 2.0 requires an Internet connection and at least 1GB of
local storage. Also, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) has announced two BD-LIVE enabled titles for an April 8 release: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and The 6th Day, complete with exclusive downloadable content.

I know everyone will ***** and moan about no XMB...but honestly, this sounds like a good update. Especially the BD resume feature.

Kudos Sony.

why dont they fix the non divisnle by 16 divx issue??? if a file resolution isnt divisible by 16 it wont play on the ps3?? what kind of horse***** is that?

Sorry, but we've had an XMB since the system was released. Oh, you mean in-game XMB? It's coming, but not soon, and it's gonna rape. An insider revealed how it's not just gonna be some generic in-game menu, but it'll be awesome.

I don't really care too much about the Blu-ray stuff.

This looks like a good update, but I'm sure I'll have to update my PSP as well to use remote play. I like 3.8 cfw, damnit!

Maybe not...they don't always seem to require an update to the PSP at the same time. I'm in the same boat as you, so here's to hoping...

I like the update... just hope this time I can see the name of the movie and not just DVD Video...

from what I read in the others site news about this is that will come in late march and will be firmware 2.20? well... so that's why isn't in game xmb then so don't start moaning about it, the guy said in summer with the firmware 2.4 so lets wait and see...

hmm... BD-live seems to be much cooler than I thought... especially with the interactive movie-based games, I imagine something like a Harry Potter Blu-Ray where you have to press various buttons to cast a spell. After that, the movie continues...

Where is the source of this information? I dont want this to be just another rumour like the others...

in the official blog or in bluray.com too, believe it, it's real... what I don't understand is that they never wait for the 2.2 and never release the 1.7 but oh well...

 » Downloading instead of streaming!

Wonderful!! The only real biggie for me in this update was the ability to DOWNLOAD my songs from the PS3 onto the PSP. Streaming sucks for many reasons - battery consumption, connection problems, the inconvenience of having to have a PS3 continuously connected.... But wait, it says "playLISTS". Does that mean we can only download the m3u-files, not the mp3's themselves?

Resume Play is good too, but incredibly stupid that they didn't implement it from the start. Why not add this feature into a (for us in Sweden) $1000 machine, when we could buy cheap and crappy standalone DVD players that have this feature?

Faster web browser. Neat. Next up is a more stabile one that doesn't force you to cold reboot every time you disconnect before it's finished loading up.

What's the deal with "Audio Output Device"? It says it "enables the PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.", but why switch songs being played on the PS3 via Remote Play, instead of the already-wireless Sixaxis? Why would I want to be able to switch songs that are played at home, when I am in school? Why play music some place (i.e. at home) when I'm not present? Could anybody explain this please?

Anyway, this seems a pretty good update overall. Next up is implementing the ability to switch off the WLAN when Remote Start is activated, if we want to have Remote Start when the PS3 is connected via cable (not WiFi), and we're not at home. It sucks more power, and the fan makes a lot of noise. We wouldn't be needing any fan if the WLAN was off. There's no use having a WLAN activated when we: 1) Are not at home, and 2) Have connected the PS3 with cable instead of WiFi.
