Yes, given that our source is called the sonyprotectiongroup, this is most definitely something that attempts to promote the PlayStation 3's graphical ability. But that's not the point of this. This isn't about the console, this is about a game.

The point of this is that given the graphics shown in Gran Turismo HD, a lot of folks are actually glad that the people in charge are taking their time with Gran Turismo 5. A fellow named consolecrusader posted the Sony Protection Group forums a particularly moving image comparison. It was GTHD vs. real-life. Here's a preview:

Real Life vs. GTHD - Image 1

GTHD vs Real Life - Image 1
GTHD vs Real Life - Image 2

Well? Which one wins?

 » Fake

These have to be fake.

If you look at every 'screenshot' thats meant to be of GT:HD you'll see that the wheels are completely stationary. No motion blur on the 'spokes' of the wheels. Secondly, when was this car in GT:HD? I can't remember seeing it in the car selection screens or anywhere. Thirdly, what the hell, there are screen shots that are complete copies of real life photos. Clearly these could only be created and not made simply from being in a single tracked demo that is GT:HD.

Now i love Gran Tourismo and all. And i'm a vivid GT Fan and can't wait for the 5th installment. But sheesh. This is just BS. Honestly.

   Re: DarKaoZ (Unregistered) - 2007-05-06
 » Not Fake

This is not fake, this car only appeared in a Special Edition of GT:HD that they released in a certain event, now they will release it to the public in a near future upgrade of GT:HD, but for now they are giving us the video of it a replay using the that same car. This is not a Fake at all.

They can stop the motion blur in replay mode, and freeze the entire game, then take a Screen shot.

Its not fake.

GT doesn't use motion blur. Your eyes will do the blurring for you. Watch a replay of GTHD and take a snapshot with a camera. You will notice that theres no ghosts from previous frames and its not blurred.

Do the same for other racing games like Burnout, Need for Speed, PGR, Forza and all those games have motion blur. Motion blur for racing games means that the framerate for the game is inconsistent and therefore motion blur is used to smooth the times when the framerate may drop.

Motion blur was highly used in a lot of Xbox and PS2 games because it was an easy way to get around framerate drops. These days, developers claim that motion blur makes games more realistic looking but its wrong. When done correctly, your eyes will motion blur for you when something is moving fast.

   Re: Mic2000 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-06
» The Real thing about motion blur in next gen games!

Motion blur in next gen games do really exist and are different from the prev-gen motion blurs.

If we look at gears of war, turn around with the camera very fast and you will see a good motion blur. Now when you look at call of duty 2 for xbox 360, the framerate is really high, but you won't see any motion blurs. This makes it really fake. It gives me the feeling that i'm playing an arcarde game. Well that's my feeling.

Back to the motion blur part. If you look at the demo(trailer) of Project Offset, they can freeze the game, move with the camera, but still the motion blur of the game is there(they freezed the motion blur as well)... wauw...

Well what they do is saving the speed(vector) of every vertex* in every object(correct me if i'm wrong) using a pixel shading technique to make a motionblur in the same direction of every vector from every vertex.

With this technique you can freeze motion blurs etc. If you look at the long trailer of Little Big planet, in the end when they are on the skateboard. You see a really good motion blur diagonal of the objects that pass by. And what i saw was a really big motion blur mistake! The wheels of the skateboard did had a motion blur. But it didn't look right, if you look at it again you will see what i mean. Why it went wrong, because a vector just points to somewhere, some direction, the motion blur wil be made that direction nothing more. Well with wheels you don't have vectors, but (i don't know how to say it in english) rotating "vectors", because of the wheel that rotates. Now if they could use that, and use a motion blur technique that makes a motion blur in the good rotate direction then it would be nice, but that is a lot more work. So what they did with gran turismo where they have the same problem, they took away the motion blur of the wheels. Thats it. So:

1.Look at the demo of Project Offset
2.Then the demo trailer of LittleBigPlanet
3.Think Think, or read my stuff again ^
4.Make the conclusion that motion blur do exist, its always fake but that doesn't matter, that it's different from previous consoles, and that its currently not usefull on rotation objects ;)

» Gran Turismo games are so yesterday

Come on, GTA 5 still wont have car damage because the car companies wont let them. This game will be another marketing strategy for car companies out there. Forza 2 will be better because its running 64fps and has car damages. I dont care about 600+ cars. Most of the cars are junk anyway. A minivan in a Racing game? Give me a break. Im better off with having 300 cars in Forza 2. Atleast we would have some downloadable content like cars and tracks.

   Re: Eddie (Unregistered) - 2007-05-06
» GT games are NOT yesterday!

Polyphony themselves admitted that creating the type of damage currently is games is very simplified and general damage (i.e. same cracks on windshield or same dent on fender), but being that they are perfectionists they would take the extra step and implement actual damages done to every part of the vehicle and the extent of the damage on that panel would vary according to the impact. However, the coding to make this happen "would be like creating another game." Basically, they don't want to half ass the job, if it's not perfect it won't be in the game. But we can probably expect this feature in an update or GT6.

   Re: Seoulfood (Unregistered) - 2007-05-06
 » hahaha

64 fps? did you add the 4 to make it better than GT? That's pretty tricky. The GT devs said that they might incorporate damage depending on what the car companies allow. I mean, there is a limit to what any dev can do in terms of damage. Even in Forza, you won't see the front of a car get crunched up even if you hit a wall at 70 miles per hour(at least from the demonstration I saw). Damage will be, at best, bumpers falling off.

Oh well...

While it's hard to thell in these low res images,
the differences are obvious to me with the high res images from the site.

There is no dirt on the car from the gran turismo pictures.
If you look closely, you can see the GT pics are more pixelated.
The background has motion blur, but the wheels don't, like the car is a hovercraft.
The reflections are duller on the GT version also.

It's good, but not great. Nothing really to brag about. I thought Forza 2 looked much better as they showed close up comparisons, and the detail in the reflections and lighting was completely photo realistic.

Gran Tursimo was the s*it when it came out on playstation 10 years ago. Sadly, it's still basically the same f*cking game with better graphics. Crappy AI, no damage modeling, same tracks, same performance mods, just nothing new to offer. They spend all their time making every peice of s*it on wheels available in the game even though only half of them are decent race cars and leave all these issues unnattended.

It's a good thing that the car isn't damaged, otherwise you'd be able to tell right away which one was real life and which one sucked...I mean, which one was GT.

Besides, everyone knows GT makes cars look pretty, and in real life road grime and dirt will cake the car after running lap after lap after lap. It was supremely easy to tell the difference, because GT doesn't model the slow accumulation of dirt and grime, like for instance the Colin McRae series.

Umm, no...they don't. The car wash was a gimmick in GT4. They look pretty in the car wash screen, but on the course they look the same before and after.

I'm not trying to compare it to Forza because the cars in GT have always looked better, but even in a few of the released Forza vids, they show some tire rubber debris build-up on each of the wheel wells behind the tires. It's not much, but it's something. I'm just wondering why the GT series hasn't taken this route yet.

And why the hell don't they have damage!? If the 360 can do it, then surely the PS3 can. The GT series has just lost some of it's appeal to me, recently.

   Re: Nerd (Unregistered) - 2007-05-07
 » .

there really isn't much need for 60+fps in games...the majority of tvs cant display more than 60fps. the reason for even thinking about 120fps is so that you can make sure the frame rate will never drop below 60fps, and that wouldnt happen too much in a well developed game - the visual difference between 60fps and 120fps would be minimal. one of the places the figure 120fps makes sense is in cameras, like the playstation eye. its 120fps feature wont improve visuals, but it'll improve the cameras motion sensitivity function as it has more images to process

Just because you don't have a PS3 you feel like you need to come over to these forums to people who own the system and talk sh1t about it?

The GT demo was amazing. Remember that GT is a racing simulator and is made to be like the real thing. And for those people who say GT is sh1t because it has no damage, do you really want to be on the last lap of a 200 lap endurance race and hit a wall at 300kp/h, get the car all CRUNCHED up and blown to pieces and have the car respawn? WTF? or even a pop up on the window say you were last to finish the race because you crashed...

Minor damage in GT is perfect, I repeat it's a racing simulator, if you want damage go play burnout of somthing. GT is a completely different game OK?

I can't wait for this game, been a GT fan since GT 1 on the first Playstation. BUT! I would like GT to have an online play option and fix the crowd of people :P

The only reason x-bots even bother coming to a PS3 forum is because:

a) They are jelous of the PS3, so they talk sh1t.
b) They want a PS3 but cant afford it, so they talk sh1t.
c) They have nothing to do because their x-box has over heated and died, so they talk sh1t.
d) They are lonely nerds that want attention, so they talk sh1t.

"They are lonely nerds that want attention, so they talk sh1t."

Unfortunately, your ranting post makes you seem more like the 'lonely nerds' you're referring too.

Anyway...I'm not going to get into the PS3 vs 360 nonsense here, since that's not what this topic is about. But I would say that the GT series IS in need of enhancements, and damage is one of them.

You say it's a racing simulator and was made to be like the real thing and yet you don't want damage to effect the car's performance? How is that realistic?

I see nothing wrong with the idea of damage (Forza proved it can work really well), especially if it stop gamers from using other cars to bump around corners quickly, which is a classic GT tactic and one which is very unrealistic and something which would be REALLY annoying to gamers online.

Ideally, they should have various levels of damage, from none at all right up to ultra realistic. That way, everyone would be satisfied, but it SHOULD be in the game imo, especially for one you say "is a racing simulator and is made to be like the real thing".

The big difference between Forza 2 and GT is the usual PS3 problem its not coming out for bloody ages whereas FORZA 2 is out in about 3 weeks, Forza 2 has been tweaked to the limit and it is going to be hard to beat.

It will be interesting to see if they can actually get GT running at 64FPS as Forza 2 can, they couldnt do it with Motostorm.

The way you are trying to make out this looks so good is just stupid, they are replay shots ALL racing games look a hell of a lot better in replay shots its that simple, and of course you cant play a driving game without rumble so you had better get saving up for those pads that you are going to be forced to buy IF they include rumble in GT
