Squeenix is working its magic again. - Image 1

For fans of the almost-legendary Japanese RPG-machine, Square Enix, listen up as there may be yet another reason to get giddy with excitement, and yes, it may have something to do with the latest Final Fantasy sequel.

In a recent press release, Square Enix has just announced that it has just licensed Epic Games' popular middleware, Unreal Engine 3, which it plans to use in the development of next-gen games. According to Taku Murata, head of Squeenix's Research and Development Division, having this game engine on board can help the company's game-making process in many ways:

The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development. However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform.

Now, we all know that Final Fantasy XIII is already in the works and is set to be released on the PS3. With UE3 now a factor, one can't help but just imagine what kinds of environments and AI we'll eventually encounter. Also, considering the fact that we're talking about a team which has been able to eke out every bit of potential from the PS2, we have high hopes for what they can possibly concoct from both UE3 and the Cell processor.

Epic must be pissing their pants from this awesome news. And seriously, good for Square. Now we can finally sit down and wait for a TRUE comparison of 360 vs. PS3 graphics. But I'm also wondering, if they're gonna use the unreal engine, is it more likely to see multiplatform square games?

I hope not.

now that thats done, I hope its not multi-platform but if it is i wonder what the control schemes will be like for the other systems and will the 360 have rumble? Also is the unreal engine downscaleable because i KNOW that the wii cant handle unreal graphics

 » Its An Incredible Engine..

Hail for Epic for an Amazing Job...The Unreal Engine 3 Is a True Technical Acheivement.

Just Look What It Did to the 360....They Had Nothing.....Gears of Wars Saved Them With Its Graphics

In Fact,Because of the Unreal Engine 3....MicroSoft Will Never Be Able to Impress With Halo3...The Game Looks Crap Compared to Any Game that Will Use the UE3.

UT2K7 Will Put Halo3 to Shame.

Which is Probably the Reason Why Microsoft Didnt Work on a UT2K7 for the 360.....It Would Kill Bungie,a First-Party Developer, and they Went with Gears of War...a 3rd Person Shooter with Small Multi-Player that Cant Be Derictly Compared to Halo3 [Different Style]

Sqaure-Enix Wont Scrap the White Engine...But the UE3 has Incredible Tools and Models that They May Use for Enviroments,Which Will Be an Increible Thing.

Sqaure-Enix Games Will Look More Real than Ever.

The Engine Can Be Tuned to Take Full Advantage of the PS3 architucture....and Sqaure Can Focus On Other Aspects Like Story,Plot Game Mechanics....Etc

The PS3 is Starting To Get a Lot of Good News,By the End of 2007...It Will Dominate

 » LOL!

You make me laugh sometimes broken-hero :D. You have your head far up Sony's a*** and you're proud of it. You remind me of the snivelling little sycophantic creeps we see in the workplace, who do *everything* possible just to please their boss.

Seriously, why bring Halo 3 into this, and why such dumb comments about it? Yes this is good news for the PS3, but it would make a change if for once, just once, we can read goods news and the PS3 and talk about it without some idiot fanboy trying to turn it into a war by talking about the 360!!!!

   Re: OneTwoMany (Unregistered) - 2007-01-25
 » Interesting...

Although I don't think it will happen to FFXIII (probably too far into developement on the White Engine, unless they switch to UE3), but surely Square Enix games on UE3 makes the possibility of ports far more likely because it will be MUCH easier for them.

So in some ways this is good news, but thinking about their games on UE3, I'm not so sure this is such good news in the long run! :-|

Oh and, calm down ILuvGames, he's not THAT bad. But you're right that there was no need to mention the 'H' word here.

[CONFIRMED UT2K7 FOR THE 360....]

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/758/758367p1.html

"the Chicago-based publisher today announced that the game formerly known as Unreal Tournament 2007 is now Unreal Tournament 3. And it's coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the second half of 2007."

Halo3 is Officially Dead....

This is Excellent News for 360 Ownerz,Now They can Leave The Childish-Kids Appealing Halo and Join the Greatest Multi-Player FPS...Unreal Tournament.

Halo,s Few Mods can Never Match The Huge Amount of User-Created Content of UT,Not to Mention the Graphical and AI Excellence.

Unfortunately,The Greatest Thing About UT....its User-Created MODS...and Special User-Made Maps,will Be Absent for 360 Ownerz

Thanks to the Closed-Nature Xboxlive....360 owner Wont be Able to Download the [UT] User-made MODS and Maps,Since they Only Allow you to Download what They Want....Too Bad

As for PS3 and PC Ownerz and Thanks to their Open-Nature....they are in For a Treat....Just Like UT2K4,there Will Be Incredible User-Created Content that Will Make this Games Stand Still Until the End of this Generation..

Do you have link to information about the Playstation3 allowing mods on their games?

The main reason this feature is turned off in the 360 is to remove cheating and make it fair for all users. That's on of the reasons Xbox Live is so successful. It's funny you say Halo is dead but millions of people are still playing Halo 2 on live each month. Not bad for a 2 year old game.

I want my online experience fair and balanced. I don't want the servers to die off a month after launch. That's why the 360 is the best choice for online gaming.

   Re: Oh (Unregistered) - 2007-01-26
 » sighzzzzz

I have a 360 and a PC, I have Unreal Tournament on the PC and I find it very boring,I also have Halo 2 and find that boring to Gears of war to me is a far better game than both of them but there you go its all just everyones personal preference but at least I dont try and push mine on other people.

I dont think its to do with the so called open end of the PS3 more like M$ putting a stopper on it to stop cheating which is a good thing.

 » sighzzzz

Whoops, didnt see Devise post there before or I wouldnt of posted mine,I agree M$ has far the best policy on online anti cheating, look at some PC games they are just so infested with cheats you just cannot possible win unless you cheat to.

PS3 can because of either Homebrew or Linux :D

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-01-26
 » ...

PS3 Linux is sandboxed, you have no access to the game partition of the hard drive. Obviously Sony did this for a reason. so the games can't be hacked or MODIFED.

 » good news

If this gets Squeenix to put out more than like two games a year, then I'm all for it. There's no way that it will be used for FFXII. Not this far into developement.

   Re: me (Unregistered) - 2007-01-25
 » ...

Yeah... might be a bit hard to use it on FFXII when the game was released last year.

 » Holy S#!%!

This is awesome. The UE3 engine kicks a**. However, I've only experienced the UE3 engine in shotoer games. I wonder how FFXIII will be using it for RPG's though. This is going to be one interesting year.
