Ó

Yes, he's back. The bald-headed legend and Sony's president of Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison has given us a sneak preview of the PS3's Dashboard and Browser. Lets start with the dashboard. Phil Harrison described the PS3's dashboard as in development, and so instead of giving us a complete walkthrough, all we get is an in-depth look at the photo browser. While this may seem like one of the simpler PS3 features, the true power of the Cell processor and a 1080p display (HD) can be seen with the manipulation of photos from their ordinary 2D state, much like you see a screensaver on your PC, to a 3D screensaver where the photos are scattered across the screen like photos falling from an album. Pretty neat huh?

The dashboard does look rather like the XMB from Sony's PSP, only with more options and a larger HD display. It has obviously been designed to be native to other Sony product users for easy use, rewarding portable Playstation fans too. The photo image settings are reminiscent of the PSPs video settings display, a translucent menu that does not interrupt what you are viewing but takes up a small portion of the screen with a wide variety of options.

Not, lets get to the juicy part: the PS3's web browser. The feature that Phil Harrison seems most impressed about is the ability for multiple windows to be open at the same time, which many second-generation web browser users refer to as tabs. This may seem like a rather standard feature but the PS3's web browser does have more than your standard Firefox browser.

Sony have opened up the ability tabs- multiple windows can be viewed all at the same time on one screen, seeing all of your pages at once. He demonstrated this by having the two Sony websites and the Google homepage open all at once. As Harris ion said, the browser is an important part to the PS3 as it is where "The games and the community merge."

He also stated that the dashboard will be constantly updated with new features for every component- from the photo viewer to the web browser, so expect to see more details on the PS3's dashboard in the future. Watch the video but be careful - Harrison does push his luck with a few cheesy jokes at the beginning.

SONY'S TRUTH!!!!!!!

Im just clearing things up which people seem no to understand that sony is again overhyping, but this time theyve done well to hide it.and its just a matter of time before it gets released.

First a bit on my background.
I have done an education for computer sciences with a major in 3D graphics development, and I am now working for my PhD.
Since this is so, I have worked quite a bit with hardware in terms of programming and graphics creation

Let me warn all of you, sony is overhyping it's product once again, like they have done before.
And I am amazed to see how biased several of the webpages and magazines are.
They all try to downsize Xeon and Xenon technology, but with the arguments and testcases that most of these sources come up with , Cell and RSX will often come out way worse, yet that's a thing they do not show us of course.

Many people don't seem to grasp that ATI's Xenon truly is a revolution in terms of pipeline architecture.
Unlike the RSX the Xenon is truly next gen,
Xenon revolutionizes powermanagement within it's core, so it doesn't need all the mhz's to create a massive output.

The unified shader architecture also gives developers way more playground, and the Xbox 360 will certainly be able to incorperate more ways of instruction for creating and rendering the graphics on screen.
The RSX on the other hand will have it's massive clockspeed, but it will use it in a less efficient way.

Anyway, with the specs of both consoles now fully released it is possible to do a REAL TIME comparinson of the 2 consoles, your about to see what most of the sony representetives didnt want you to see.

Comparing these two GPU's is like comparing Apples to Banana's.
RSX on paper will have certain advantages over Xenon, and Xenon will have certain advantages over RSX.

There is the element of co-operation with the CPU we also have to consider.

Ok, lets put up the specs for the RSX as published.

- 550 Mhz

- 51 billion dot products/sec count's for total system performance

- 300 Million Transistors

- 136 shader operations per clock

good now that's for the facts as presented to us, we have 550 MHz of power to work with

The Cell and the RSX together are capable to produce 51 billion dot products.
I think it is interesting to take a closer look at this claim especially, since I worked with this bit while the specs of both consoles first became public, the important thing is that mnay people just compare the seperate peices of each console to PS fanboys and PS3 no-it-alls it will be music to there ears, but to us who know about comoputers and know how to compare them, ill tell you one thing, sony has lost alot of its credibility ;).

Anyway.
Since the Cell will have 7 DSP's all being able to do a dot product per cycle, we have some numbers to work with, we can put the numbers in a small calculation.

7DSP * 3.2(ghz) = 22.4 billion dot products/sec for the CPU

since we had 51 billion in total , we will have to substract them to know what is left for the GPU.

51 - 22.4 = 28.6 Billion dot products

When you devide this number to the clockspeed of the GPU you will get 52 ALU operations per clock as they are called.

Now as stated before, the RSX's architecture is not that different from the GeForce 6800 and so it will use Vector4 standards.
Since ATI's architecture is done with Vector5s it will handle the material a bit different.
Now there also the Multiply Add instructions, in short MADD instructions to work with.
In plain English MADD means that the vector graphic will be recalculated to it's precise position, and the instruction always sort of double checks before we get output, that's why we have throw in the 2 value in the end calculation.

So, what we have here is this.

52 ALU ops * 4 floats (vector4s) * 550 (clockspeed) * 2 (MADD) =228.8

Gflops for the RSX and Cell as a team.

If we do the same with the specs of Xbox 360 we will find that it does the following, all the numbers provided through the same calc

Where have you been since PS3 was announced, Sony said PS3 will be a multimedia device, not a games console only. It is mainly focusing on games but it will also include support of videos, pics and stuff.

Yeah um you say you have final specs of the RSX yet they have not been released you dont need to be a 3D graphics developer to know that. So even with all your vast knowledge you still looks stupid. If the 360 GPU is so good because it is 48 unified. Then way has ATI stopped making unified graphics cards? Xenos is already old hardware anyways so why does it matter. PC will always rule consoles. But but you have to buy a new graphics card every year. Thats because the PC is constantley evolving which means it gets better than what it alreayd is. When you buy a console it what get there know upgrading.

Is it just me or is the dashboard the EXACT same as the psp one omg lol. Lets hope the ps3 wont follow in the psp footsteps. IMO the ps3 will be the worst next gen system with the best technology. Techniology and graphics dont make a good system lets hope Sony knews this or it will be the Second Dreamcast.

» Sony's super-computer is better than Microsofts console

...simply because they have much better focus on making great games in all genres..

It shows, since the 360-fanboys have nothing better to do, than hanging out here and complaining about stuff wich they do not have a clue about.
Just like authour of message #4..
Sure his calculation may seem right, if he did the same calculation with PS2 and the original XBox.
He'd see that PS2 pushes more dots per second than XBox.

If you want a great gamesystem, and don't want to miss out on great games, buy PS3 and PS3 games.
If you hate Sony, buy PS3, but no games, then Sony will losse money.
But there is no point in making up stuff, in order to make a system look worse than it is.

Yeah, Xbox got a great Live Gold-system, but it stop beeing so great if you try ending the subscription..

It's pretty hard to do, without having to call Microsoft Support (wich usually involves sitting in phone-queue).
Sure, it's a option wich should do it just as easy to quit as every other payment service in the internet, but when you click it, and confirm that you want to quit your subscription, all you get is a message saying that it's so complicated that you have to PHONECALL MS-support in order to quit your subscription.
The easiest way to quit your subscription is actually to close your credit card, and get a new creditcard from your bank.
That way you'll also get some extra free time using your account.

ur a lil wrong there... first the rsx isnt based on the 6800 architecture its based on the 7800 architecture. the xenon gpu in the 360 is based on ati's x1900 architecture if im not mistaken... according to all the benchmarks ive seen those too cards are pretty much on par with each other (although ati has better efficiency and architecture nvidia has far more power behind their product) with ati getting a slight nod... i also noticed u did not prove anything of the 360's overall power wich IS less do to the lesser cpu (and dont come with that bull***** 3ppc's beat 1ppc plus 7spe's) on paper and as far as i kno in practice the cell rsx combo out paces the 360's Xeon Xenon combo and until u give me sound proof of this my opinion will not change... all ur math and calcs can say whatever they want u can never expect theory and practice to come out with the same results... it just doesnt happen like that...

and for all u ppl talkin ***** about the ps3 not havin good games maybe u should look at the game list... games such as resistance, mgs4, gthd, sonic, heavenly sword, dmc4 none of these titles are week by any means so just stfu!!!!

» u r wrong 4 u still dont know the power of cell

cell has 7 DSPs and each DSPs use the RSX, so wat that means is its like 7 RSX being used together, so the memory wont be used at all only by a little, u can put in the worlds sukest graphics card in the world and still play games beter, even wihtout the graphics card, sony thouhgt of thinking not even using the graphics card.

ms support?

Guess you weren't old enough to remember the countless failed ps1s and ps2s....right?

Sony had to get sued countless times for them to even CONSIDER trading in the *****ed up consoles for new ones...

and with the way the ps3 is said to be more complicated, have more heating issues, i wouldn't be surprised to see 20x the errors.

now, about you so called "better games" streight from a fanboys mouth, i'm suspecting you have no idea the games scheduled for the 360? or the ones for the ps3?

right now only 100 are set for the ps3(of course this list will grow) but i see in no way how the launch titles for the ps3 are any match to what is alread out(or expected to come this holiday season)

you obviously are a blind fanboy that can only say things like "better games", "power", and "you don't know what you are talking about"

don't worry my good ole' fanboy. I'll be picking up a ps3 this holiday season.

But with no belief that it will be light years above any system including the wii.

Face it, the wii is a gamecube with a cool controller... bothhte 360 and PS3 blow it away.

Also the PS2 failure rate was well within norms. But when you seel over 100 million units (versus 25 million, xbox )10% seems like a lot.

And are u accusing Sony of not having any good games??? Absurd...

 » PS3

Sony PS3 will win this generation and every generation after as long as they provide the same quality they have provided in the past.

Sony made mistakes, Microsoft made mistakes, Nintendo made mistakes, so whats the difference in comparing mistakes.

Sony sold over 200 million consoles with a "small" percent being defective.

Microsoft hasnt reached 10 million and already a good amount of them are defective %5+.

So who has the bigger mistake?

The XMB was designed to be simple and self instructing. Every person I let use my PSP never had to ask me, how do i watch videos, listen to music, play a game. However, most of the people I know who have a Xbox360 needed my help to get everything going.

Setting up the Wifi on the PSP is as simple as it can possibly get. There are people who call Microsoft help desk just to get to the Wifi settings page. I have friends who work in the help desk and they say every day someone calls to help get their Wifi setup.

XMB works, PSP proves it, XMB is so simple because you have one of the easiest navigation methods and easy to understand icons.

Icons, Icons, Icons. I can not stress how important Icons are. Microsoft knows how important they are, Vista has several more Icons and redesigned Icons for better navigation in the OS. The Beta Office 2007 has Icons for EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine and would use.

And what does the XBOX360 dashboard still have? Its Icon-less in some of the most important places, like the Settings.

The Xbox360 dashboard is very old. Its the same thing as a Windows configuration window. Tabs, and within those tabs is buttons, and those buttons open other stuff.

Show me one thing that the Xbox360 can do easier then the XMB.

r u an idiot. you can speek all that tech stuff you want. but to almost every other developer they all say that the ps3 is the more powerful system. im not saying your wrong but your like the only so-called developer that says the xbox is more powerful. anyway alot of people wont understand all that tech talk. so go get some ass and pretending your developing. you dam fanboy.

Come on who cares if it is just like the psp, that menu is sweet better than the ps2. Its a gaming machine with some sweet extras on it. ITS A MULTI MEDIA CONSOLE!!!!
