Sierra Entertainment's Ghostbusters: the Video Game is definitely set to spook out gamers in various platforms such as PC, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii, DS. But making the multiple versions might be a difficult task.According to Terminal Reality, the company responsible for developing the game, they prefer working with the PS3 version before tackling the Xbox 360 and PC versions. Terminal Reality's president, Mark Randell, had a technical reason why they were going to take such a step. Randell said that unlike other consoles, the "multiprocessing model of the PS3 is not a general-purpose model." The console itself utilizes six Synergetic Processing Units and one main processor at the same time. This is what sets it apart from the Xbox 360 and the PC. Randell continued that the Xbox 360 and the PC "share a general-purpose multiprocessor coding model." While the 360 puts into use three general-purpose PowerPC processors, the PCs use about one to four Intel or AMD processors. Given the situation, the company has resolved that it's easier to make the development of the game move from "specialized processors to general processors." As Randall concluded: We’ve found that writing for the PS3 first and then porting to the 360 and PC is a much simpler and more efficient procedure. It might be a little difficult dealing with the PS3 version first, but it'll be beneficial in the long run as they can port it to other consoles with much ease. We'll just have to wait and see how the developers move on with making the game. More news and updates to come! |

» Wow...
A developer smart enough to work on a Ghostbusters game and to work out the PS3 kinks first.
I'm impressed.

» Dan Akroyd
Dan Akroyd has been interviewed on this game and he said that he considers this to be a TRUE SEQUEL to the movies. I think he wrote most of the script for the video game.
I'm impressed +1.

» Got Fanboys?
You three must have a PS3... who cares if the PC and 360 users have to live with a port. Everyone should be better people and own a PS3 like you guys.

» Let's use an analogy...
Imagine there was a car that was amphibious and could fly like a plane. This "car" needs special fuel to fly and submerge underwater and a specialized maintenance program for it to work at its optimal levels. However, because it is a car, it can use standard petrol and maintained like every other car.
So, when someone says, "We're going to make this car fly"...I say, "I'm impressed". Does that make me a fanboy? If so, I guess, I am. /shrug
BTW, if you don't get it, the PS3 has its problems because very few developers have the skills the program from it...and, even though, some devs claim it is easy to program from it...this is only true if you're not doing anything "special" like combining physics engines.

» not only that...
everybody is going to profit from this. More comfortable and efficient ways to program let developers make better games. So even if you only own a 360 or a PC, you will have nicer and better games.

Neuromancer - whats ya beef dude? we'd all be better off if games developers focused on one console and go the best out of that system rather than compromising to place a game across all formats, look what epic achieved with GOW and bungie did with Halo would they have been so spotless if they'd been developed across all platforms? look at the problems rockstar had with GTA had that been on one console it might have been on time!

» Well...
I agree with what you say, games built specifaclly to take advantage of a system are usually the best...especially when built ground up for that system.
The problem is, this dev has also stated that the game will be exactlly the same across all platforms...
So by saying they are more comfortable working on PS3 first is by proxy admiting that the PS3 is harder to program for and that getting the code done on PS3 will determine their launch window as they know that making it work on 360/PC will take X months as they know the development environment so well....
Don't get me wrong, i'd love to see some game really do something crazy with PS3....but it's yet to happen...
