The Agency - Image 1

We've heard a lot about the possibility of cross-platform play in Sony Online Entertainment's The Agency (PlayStation 3, PC). This time, it's senior game designer Kevin O'Hara's turn to sound off on the matter. Long story short, he thinks that contrary to what they say on Internet forums, gamers don't really like cross-platform play.

"We've been doing a lot of research on it though and we're finding that players actually don't like it. They say that they want it because it sounds cool to play with your PS3 buddies with your PC," said O'Hara. "But in practice no matter how balanced you make it there's a perception that inherently it's unfair."

This echoes some of executive producer Matt Wilson's earlier statements. Talking about the problems that SOE is facing with regards to cross-platform play, Wilson said that "there's always a dynamic of 'It's not fair!' for whatever reason."

There's still a bit of good news for those who really want to try some cross-platform action in The Agency, though. Even though the feature is not likely to make it to the game's final release, they'll still try it out during the beta phase.

"In beta we'll try it a little bit and see how we like it but if nothing else the majority of servers will be either PS3 or PC, maybe with some crossover servers," said O'Hara.

this is were i disagree

its a feature you can include it as an option, if people dont like it they dont have to use it

seein it will be in the beta, it wouldnt cost much more expense if any

also the ps3 is capable of mouse and keyboard support

its alot more unfair playing with people with different speed or PC specs, no matter what, online gaming will never be fair

» cross plat will never be fair...

while it would be cool to see a cross platform game... pc's tend to get a lot of hacks. more so than any other gaming platform. also most pc's aside from the processor have massive amounts of ram both in graphics and on the motherboard (if you assume that it is a gaming pc). any match with a ps3 user against a pc user would almost always have the pc user at an advantage. the differences in power would make it seem like lag.

also i would rather go cross plat with other consoles that have more secure software than a pc.

there is fairness in online play. as long as everyone plays with a console then that is as fair as it gets. the only discrepancy would be in internet connections. adding the pc to the mix would bring in a ton of problems.

PC hacks have been really cut down by stuff like punkbuster and Valve's anti-cheat. I don't think this is the issue it once was.

If the game runs at a decent framerate on the console, I doubt the PC user would have any advantage there. In fact, the PC user is free to crank up the settings to put himself at a disadvantage.

They should make different "rooms" where you can play against people with the same hardware or cross-platform, and let the users decide for themselves.

Here's why people always thought it was unfair: You can ice people playing with a gamepad if you have a mouse and keyboard.

But, this isn't a problem with the PS3 - just plug in a mouse and keyboard!

I think this guy is buying into excuses his developers gave him so that they could code lazy for one platform.

No, because although you CAN plug in a mouse/keyboard, it's not something all ps3 owners have, while a controller they do. The PC is the ultimate gaming console, it doesn't get better than a top notch gaming PC. A ps3 or xbox360 can only do really one thing, play games, while a PC can do everything, plus games.

» PC is not the ultimate gaming console

It was in the 90's, its not the 90's, get over it. Graphically, PS3 (and even xbox 360) games look just as good or better, and unlike pc games you dont have to deal with mutiple tech spec levels both as a designer or as a consumer. The average comsumer has to choose between dropping a bunch of money into upgrading their pc so they can get any sort of worthwhile gameplay out of it, or deal with choppy graphics, lag, and frustration.

And PS...
The keyboard is *****ty as a game controler. The only reason people swear by it is habit and that a mouse is generally more effective at free aiming.

Umm I have yet to see a single game look better on a console than on a pc. Bioshock Is a good example as its multiplatform and out of all of the platforms it shines most on PC in terms of GFX.

As for your silly comment on Keyboard and mouse, I have 30x more control over my x and y axis with my mouse. Not to mention many more programable action keys with my keyboard NO gamepad can have that customizability to that extent.

Its not just a habit its common sense you can do more with it therefore its better.

What do ya expect the mouse and keyboard is better for FPS or rpg games mixed in with Fps elements :)
