It eats electricityWhile not every QJ reader pays the bills in their home, we all know that "power" is a word firmly entrenched in gaming vocabulary. Today, we won't be talking about the graphical powers of the PS3, but another power. It's the power that Sony's console eats up, and it seems to be a hefty chunk larger than the the other consoles in the market.

According to the Digital Displacement blog, it's a power-hungry piece of machinery. When kept on standby in the XMB, the PS3 used up 185 to 205 watts compared to the Xbox 360's 145 watt usage or the Wii's 15-20 watt usage when kept on their dashboard or home menu. Watt usage during gameplay varied with the game, but their healthy estimate lay anywhere from 185 to 205 watts. Lastly, playing a Blu-Ray DVD also ate up 205 watts.

What does this have to do with gaming, you might ask? In addition to our concerns about how much more your electricity bill will be each month, and how a large base of gaming consoles (and other forms of tech) will increase the need for power stations to supply adequate electricity, Digital Displacement poses a rather poignant question:

Certainly the graphics power of the next-gen consoles is awesome to behold, but when we look back to the humble Playstation and its minuscule 6 watts of power consumption during gaming, you have to wonder: are we seeing comparable increases in graphics performance to match up with 35-fold increase in power consumption? And, perhaps more importantly, are games 35 times more fun to play?

We'd actually kind of settle for at least 10 times more fun, but that doesn't really sound possible these days, does it?

Be more interesting to compare these figures to what various televisions use. I haven't looked, but I am fairly certain these figures would pale in comparison to a CRT/Plasma/LCD screen.

great comparisions. (did you see Sharp's 20inch LCD!? 18!?.. i know Sharp is #1 in tv quality in Japan even ahead of Sony, but I didn't think their technology was that good).

BTW I think Sharp sucks in N. American because it is different though uses the same name, just like Mazda sucks in N. America..

Of course the PS3 will consume more wattage. Its permanently online (unless you decide to remove that conveniance). Just deactivate the wireless signal and it will be lower.

 » What about the Wii

This is not bull, the Nintendo Wii is supposed to never be turned off and left in standby mode 24hrs a day to constantly download updates + other junk.. but unlike [ultra] greedy Sony, Nintendo spent time + money in developing a console that uses as little power as possible. Sure the wii uses wireless controllers....but so do the others. Face it, Sony sucks you idiot fan boys! They are not pro-games, they are pro-profit.. the industry has been in a slump (games quality wise) since they took the help in 1996.. support Nintendo so eventually SEGA decides to make Dreamcast #2... :-]

Amazing your trying to label Sony as greedy for giving electric companies money. Somehow that doesn't add up in my mind. Have fun with your Wii though, and I'll have fun with my PS3.

Honesty there is no need to do this shameless sales pitch for nintendo.

 » Gran Turismo is filth....

Yes I will have fun with my wii while you do not with your ps3. i'm not trying to sell you anything, and am not implying that sony is greedy because they give money to electric companies.. i am implying sony is greedy because they put profit ahead of their customers.. in one instance being that they release a product that is ineffeciant, its just like an american car company advertising a 400hp dodge charger but not including consumption figures, and when they are forced to do so, they include false figures i.e. 24mpg when in reality it is 7. But more importantly Sony is greedy because they produce inferior crap and charge you up the @$$ for it, all the while destroying the market share for companies that are actually good for gaming (like Sega & Nintendo). If you are rich and can afford with throwing money out the window you are free to do so, but the rest should not buy the hype and if they're going to sqander their saving away wouldn't you agree they should probably do it on something that will actually bring some true enjoyment to their lives.

 » TOCA 3 is out....buy it....

If you're a Final Fantasy fanatic then I would understand why you are excited about the new Playstation, which normally carries many Square-Soft exclusives, but if you are not then please stop buying the hype! Sony got to the top not due to having the best product, but do to having the most advertising.. a result of having the most capital to work with. For those of you who have been sleeping with your eyes open these past 10 years I urge you to take a wide look at the truth.. try Project Gotham 3, Forza 2, or even old games like Toca 3, Sega GT, Battle Gear 3... they are all superior to Gran Turismo... even Konami's "Enthusia" is without any doubt better than Gran Turismo HD will be. Why am ranting on about this seemily irrelevent simulation racing game? Well I know there are probably at least a few million young men in N. America who literally 10% of their lives playing the endless Gran Turismo 4. It pisses me off! It is like seeing a large population of opium addicts suffering + not even knowing it. Think I'm crazy? Fine. Just do yourself a favor and drop that copy of Gran Turismo for a few days and try ANYTHING else.. even Ridge Racer is more fun + realistic.

 » worst fanboy ignorance..... ever

I stopped reading after your "bold" statement....

The worst part of this blog is even trying to let some other company state their lame excuse of an article to bash on Sony again. It's funny how they put a negative spin on things and act like their word is authority. What does playing games have to do with power consumption. The lights in your house, TV, refrigerator, washing machine, alarms clocks, computers, and air conditioning or heating unit all add up to much more than Wii, 360, or the PS3.

 » blind fanbois

wow your a nintendo fanboy bashing on the ps3 because its inefficient power consumption? it happens with all new technology. as its manufactured a series of revisions are made to make it more efficient and reliable.

you talk about how they rip money away from you when their still selling at a lose, unlike your wii which they are making profit off of at launch on the console alone. the case looks like cheap transformer plastics and is a remodeled game cube in basic aspects.

your being cheap and blind about the fact your getting ripped off more by letting nintendo make profit off of every little thing they sell not to mention the design flaws they like to place in their handhelds so youll buy the next revision before they actually release another one with a little enhancement.

but i do agree with you, we should spend money on things we enjoy. personally besides ffIII on my NDDS ive played my PSP and enjoy it more because of what i can do with it. I played my PS1 and 2 more than my n64, gamecube, and xbox because of the better selection of games. Even though the ones i got didnt sell to become synominous to the console they were played on, the selection made up for it. I personally like to be able to go from game to game playing here and there on each to suite my mood. ill get all three systems for the games id enjoy to play, its pointless to limit yourself to one console, you lose out, especially if your cheap about it.

Are you forgetting the fact that Sony is selling the PS3 at a massive loss? Now quite being a retard fanboy and just leave people in peace. I dont know about you, but I use no more than 1 lamp at a time, and only after 5pm.. I do the laundry once every 2 weeks, my alarm clock is on a AA battery which lasts about 1 year, and I use my computer once a week to "do" my homework which am I am supposedly doing/trying to do right now. Also I have a 20inch tv which uses less power than a PS3.

The worst part about your article is protecting Sony again for no apparent reason. Here's an idea.. if people like you actually saw things for what the are, maybe the companies wouldn't have support & some changes would be made due to economic insentive! You can make excuses with percentages all you want.. but the first time I saw an Xbox 360 display earlier this year at a store, the FIRST thing I thought was "WOW, it looks like it wastes a lot of power!" You are no different than the people who try to destory the link between car emessions, and global warming. You can try to turn it anyway you want.. but when I was 4 years old I remember thinking "all these cars are bad for the environement." And I hadn't been brainwashed with any political/economical driven ideas yet. It is just common sense and human instict; waste is bad.

 » Confused

I just don't understand one thing. Wasn't cell supposed to be powerful yet efficient enough to consume less power than a 360? I mean Sony did say something like that along the lines. Also, why does the Blu Ray alone consume 205 Watts... I mean, the motor that spins the disk has less rpm than a DVD Drive (hence 2x as opposed to 12x). Is it the special diode for the blue laser that they keep talking about? I just don't get it. I'm not a techie, so maybe someone can explain this to me.

 » More argueing...

I just wanted to say I am not a Nintendo fan boy of any kind and have always been a Sega & SNK fan boy ;-) all my life.. however I had to face the truth that Nintendo makes good games.. (even though it truly hurt to say it). They have also started to rip people off a bit to compete with Sony, particularly with their hand-held systems.. which I stay away from anyways because Gamegear or SNK pocket was always better. However I'd rather get ripped off and have that money lead to innovation and colorful games played with interesting controllers. Your point that Sony is losing money on every console they make is completely stupid. That is like an American car maker complaining that they can't make their cars as cheap as the Japanese can. Well whos fault is it!? That's the thing, all Sony has is hype. People are dumb.. Sony & Microsoft make their money by building machines with flashy specs, nerds get excited and rush out and buy them (remember the pc graphics card phase? "Ati vs Nvidia") .. it's just like that. Sure they lose some money at the beginning, but 30 million units down the line I doubt they'll be complaining. Oh wait, my mistake, they DO complain about it.. like a couple of whiny *****es. That truly annoys me, (billionares pretending to be homeless). PS2 was hyped up to be very powerful but in the end it wasn't even as good as a Dreamcast in the graphic depertaments where it mattered... even though the ps2 refinement continued till now while the DC was dead in what, 2001?
All in all, deep in my heart I hate Nintendo, but it is the lesser of two evils. And what is up with the ps3 controller!? oh come on....

 » interesting debate...

that wattage is quite high, but then as someone mentioned pc's constantly consume like 500 watts or more.

so ps3 is quite 'efficient' for what it is, a very high spec computer, with a large graphics unit (they take a shed load of power nowadays). but perhaps we shouldn't be leaving it on all day and night?

i have a home computer i leave on all the time, it consumes like 400watts.

this article highlights some important issues, do we consider the amount of energy we consume? and does what we consume really matter? given that carbon emissions and fuel consumption are in serious need of attention shouldn't we be looking after all our power needs?
what about energy saving lightbulbs, energy efficiency, you can't buy a boiler in the uk if it isn't 'energy efficient', why should it be different for tvs and consoles?

Yes it's true I actually do everything I can to contribute to global pollution. In my spare time I buy arisol cans and spray them dry and I only drive cars that get single digit miles per gallon.

No I don't really do all that, but I do just live my life normally. Maybe because I'm American my normal life is horrible and filled with evil because your stereotyping me.

All I'm saying is a lot of people love to talk about the solution but never act upon it, and that's true all around the world. So don't tell me I should be ashamed of myself you arrogant jerk.

its not that they don't care, but they are trying to be realists here. 205 watts of power in an average home that may consist of 2 TV's, fridge, vcd's, dvd players, 2+ computers and other high power consumption devices is piss all in the overall outlook.

yes the ps3 uses more power then the 360, but not by much, and to compare the wii and the 360/ps3 is just stupid.
Do people even realise that the wii is just a gamecube in a different form factor and casing? you guys crack me up sometimes.

   by Matt (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » LOL!

by reading this article you are using more power than the ps3 or 360 uses! if you are running an HDTV it's using 200+ watts, a $500 A/V reciever uses 300 watts. a good $1500 reciever uses 1000+ watts. If any of you really cared about power consumption you would A) only use floresent bulbs, B) not have A/C or rarely use it. C) almost never turn on a light, D) never buy large electronic equipment. like who the F#&* do you think you're kidding here!
