Jimmy Page and Jack White are not singing praises for Guitar Hero. Their concurrence: video games shouldn't be how people get exposed to music or playing instruments. In a press conference in LA, promoting the documentary "It Might Get Loud", the two legendary guitarists (Page from Led Zeppelin, White from The White Stripes, in case you didn't know) gave out their thoughts on music-simulation games.
Page: You think of the drum part that John Bonham did on Led Zeppelin's first track on the first album, Good Times Bad TImes. How many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning? White: It's depressing to have a label come and tell you that [Guitar Hero] ishow kids are learning about music and experiencing music. [Without limiting] which format people should get their music in... if you have to be in a video game to get in front of them, that's a little sad. If you don't mind my sharing my opinion, I think the sad bit here is how musicians are being too negative with the proliferation of music video games. Yes, playing the real thing is always better -- there's no other alternative to it, honestly. But at the same time, you have to give credit where credit is due. My belief is that these video games actually do help enrich the knowledge and the experience of those playing it, especially the kids, and so develop a wider appreciation for music. Not a wider understanding of the art per se, but at least recognition and appreciation. It's just another avenue for music to spread. Music is supposed to be fun. Music video games just upped the fun level to another notch. Frankly, if not for these music video games, I think kids of the younger generation will not have access to great bands like Led Zep and The White Stripes, probably out of intimidation or simply out of ignorance. I understand why they would want to retain the art form "pure" in the strictest sense, but come on. Times are evolving. It's better to adapt than get left behind gathering dust in a collector's box up in the attic. We rock, we roll. Related Articles:

Without Guitar Hero, I would'n't have been intoduced to some bands, albeit that most bands in guitar hero are very mainstream (I don't listen to the radio) that I came to like and listen to often, and learned how to play their songs on a real guitar. Guitar Hero has also helped one of my closest friends get into playing real guitar, which I'm helping with right now. Without Guitar Hero, I wouldn't have been exposed to new bands and music I normally wouldn't have ever heard and just passed by, and my friend wouldn't have such a strong interest in learning how to play every the whole Metallica track list from Guitar Hero without the game. Bam.

I wanted to start playing guitar after playing guitar hero for a long time and I would have if I wasn't so broke. I still plan to if I can actually put some money in my pockets.
But if it wasn't for GH I would never have started listening to heavy metal. I listened to strictly underground rap until I played this game. Now I listen to more metal (and actually a whole bunch of other genres but mostly metal) and I would say it's almost entirely because of GH. So i say thank you GH for exposing me to more music.

*sniff sniff* Guitar Hero saved my life, he dragged me out of a burning car just before it blew up *sniff sniff*, he was my best friend, until i had to *sniff* put him down. He also saved a cat from a tree and ended world war 2. If it wasn't for him i would never have been able to forfill my dream of selling kitten calendars.

» Idiocy I say
Are these folks so arrogant that they don't remember a time when they couldn't play at all? Ah, rock stars, I guess it's the drugs right?
Playing an instrument (solo) is great, using something like Rock Band to expand your ability to follow beat and tempo through an entire song or set while actually paying attention to what you are doing with your body CAN help an amateur become and expert. There is no substitute for practice, and this is just another way to practice with real interactive feedback - so what if some kids think they are the stars because they can play it on a game!
I truly wish I had been exposed to something similar while I was learning guitar, I probably wouldn't have packed it away as a lost cause after a few horrible "wannabe band" experiences.

If it weren't for me playing GH 1 and 2, and both of the Rock Bands, half the bands I listen to, I still wouldn't know about. It's not like we're just supposed to magically know every good band in the word.
I played Rock Band 2, heard the song "De-Luxe" by Lush, and searched them since I liked the song. I discovered their main genre was a movement called "Shoegaze", which is now my favorite musical genre. More than half of my favorite bands fall into this category.
These games are also the main reason I wanted to get my own *real* guitar and bass guitars.

» NarooN
NarooN is a prime example of what, at least fro the interview, White mentioned.
Basically, some heads in a studio someplace decided X Y and Z songs should be in the game. Maybe it was a vote, but, ultimately, somebody had to make a final list of things to include. White's point was that you shouldn't have had somebody tell you which music is good and you should listen to it but rather you should go out and EXPLORE the world of music to find what you like.
I would suggest properly ID3-tagged MP3 files and a look over at what last.fm can do to broaden your music horizons.

@Orlyeh - What you just said made absolutely no sense what so ever.
In order for what you said to have any merit you would first have to prove that GH was someone's ONLY SOURCE of music.
Just because there is a video game on a store shelf, that doesn't mean those song and ONLY songs are deemed as good and people should ONLY listen to those songs.
What you said was lame at best and has nothing to do with the article.
GH and Rockband have ADDED to the many ways people can experience music. In no way does GH or Rockband REPLACE how music is experienced.
At age 32 I had already been VERY MUCH exposed to music in various ways. Rockband opened up the world of drumming to me. Since then I started taking lessons.
Page and White are total idiots. End of that story.

Who said I only rely on GH for music? And just for the record, I have had a last.fm account for quite some time.
ISO said everything else that was needed to be said, so kudos to him.

Page and White remind me of Metallica: "bad-A" reputations as "hardcore rockers", but (after becoming aged rockers) suddenly now no longer understand the concept of rock 'n roll! RnR has always been about the 'renegade'; going against the 'old thought'; breaking rules; breaking traditions. These one-time coke-heads now want us to listen to their 'wisdom of the ages', even though they are no longer relevant. And they're proving why they're no longer relevant. (Just like Metallica: ooh, watch out for these Renegades! ....but don't share they're tunes online! --They'll be the first ones knocking on your door for a royalty check!)

"In order for what you said to have any merit you would first have to prove that GH was someone's ONLY SOURCE of music."
Your logic doesn't follow. NarooN clearly stated:
"If it weren't for me playing GH 1 and 2, and both of the Rock Bands, half the bands I listen to, I still wouldn't know about."
So, here, he clearly states (MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ FIRST) that half of his musical tastes are because of GH1 2 and RB.
But sure, go ahead and make up statements. You're pretty good at that and seem to do it a lot. What a massive tool you have to be for somebody to compile a list of songs for you to be "exposed to".
It's like if you decided go pick up and play games because you heard they were on somebody's top 100 list (note I haven't said 'only play games on a top 100 list').

"So, here, he clearly states (MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ FIRST) that half of his musical tastes are because of GH1 2 and RB."
That's half of the bands, not musical tastes. And half of the bands was a small over-exaggeration. Like I said, the only genre I wasn't listening to or aware of was the shoegaze scene, so there you go, kid.

maybe you should not exaggerate if you are going to take issue with someone taking you at your word...
MORE than half of the new bands i listen to, i heard first in rockband or GHx... paramore for instance.
my interest in music as a whole dropped off around 2001, shortly after i became an adult with a job and a life...
so they are not just idiots, what they said applies to me. do i think it's sad? no. would i care enough to seek it out otherwise. no.
the only thing i fault them for is failing to have the perspective they should after so many years... everyone is different and it works for me.

I heard a LOT of adults (I used to work in a marching band store) come in and talk to my coworkers (other adults) about how their kids are listening to the same music they were when they were young, and they play Rock Band and stuff together.. It's not just the instrument thing, it's family time sometimes. And I play piano and saxophone, so pft. Why don't we call Rock Band not a training in "instruments", but hand-eye coordination?

WHY are you placing Jimmy Page and Jack White in the same "Legendary" category?!
Led Zeppelin was at the forefront of the creation of heavy rockmetal. They helped to forge a new genre and a new generation!
The White Stripes were a terrible Green Day wannabe band except having no bassist made them even more terrible. Jack White's voice is irritating and cracky, and his guitar playing is no better.

What I think is funny is Rock Band and GH are BETTER ways to hear music the things like radio these days. On the 15 drive to work. I usually hear one song on the three stations i listen to, the rest is commercials. Also, discovering music is all about what gets put in front of you. Its the same reason music videos were started. They dont want us to go out and download there music, and we are not going to go to the music store and just listen to every CD we have never herd of(at least most of us wount). Its all about product placement, and they are selling a product...
Secondly, Art purists bother me. Art is a fluid thing to be interpreted by the world. I believe part of art it the changing of an already good thing to reflect something different. When i heard about the movie producers suing companies that edited bad content out of movies for families to watch, and then music people getting ticked at the added drum rolls and finales in their songs, i lost respect for those people.

I've been waiting for someone to say this. They pump out a new game as soon as they can, throwing whatever junk tracks they think the kiddies will love. If you want to learn how to make music, take a class, or read a book. You aren't going to learn how to create and arrange music by playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Also, it's over-priced I could pick up a cheap laptop or a GP2X Wiz for a little more and get more out of it. And frankly, if you discover music through Guitar Hero, your musical horizons are pretty bleak.
Play it for fun, don't try and bull***** what it is.

I can honestly say I fully agree with Page and White. I have no problem with people playing whatever game they want but if you want the real deal, get a guitar, and listen to rock music from the 60's 70's and 80's. Learn your favourite songs and then you'll realize how much more rewarding it is to know you can transfer your skills to any other guitar, and most of all, play your own songs and riffs and solos - something guitar hero can't offer. There's something magical about playing music with real instruments - you are actually making the sounds, whereas guitar hero only makes the correct sounds if you hit the notes at the right time.
