Final Fantasy XIII - Image 1

In an interview with the Australian Official Official PlayStation Magazine or OPM)">PlayStation Magazine, game director Motomu Toriyama gave some pretty interesting details about Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII games. Lightning has been confirmed as the main character in FFXIII, but not much was given about her past or her personality. Toriyama was as hush-hush about Lighting as Lightning is about herself in the game. He also mentioned that they will be deliberately introducing the rest of the characters in a certain order.

There's the possibility of making minigames in Final Fantasy XIII, but they might end up as full game releases. Toriyama was also asked whether the game will be utilizing the PS3's other features like the Blu-ray disc format and the PlayStation Network, and he replied by saying that the PS3's high-definition capabilities were most crucial in the development of the game. He also said that the devs are contemplating on the PS3's online functions.

When asked about what makes FFXIII different from the previous games, the director cited the major difference in the Active Time Battle (ATB) system of this video game and of the previous ones. The ATB has been "sped up to its limit" which means a drastic increase in the pace of battles in the FFXIII.

No details were given about the other Fabula Nova Crystallis games since they were not mentioned in the interview. Toriyama also didn't give a specific release date for Final Fantasy XIII.

So while we wait for more news on this Square Enix epic, check out the rest of the scans of the OPM interview with Toriyama for more FFXIII goodness.

how come people keep saying that we only need dvds to play games???? oh i forgot we're getting into NextGen now... and it's the XBox fans who keeps on saying this... it's going to be a very long NextGen for the XBox boys...

laughed my ass off when i read how they reacted to a post by QJ saying that there might be HDDVD on the Elite... defensive bunch these XBots... it's the fear i tell you... knowing that their console isn't as NextGen as it possibly can and that Microsoft could easily have done it better.

Stop saying NextGen, it makes you look like a whore!

   Re: Seoulfood (Unregistered) - 2007-04-17
 » hahaha to theTick

and even though the Box runs DVD's, it's still got the best looking game out right now. I do, however think that FFXIII is the best-looking footage I've seen in a game thus far, and I do think a lot of trailers for upcoming PS3 games look better than most things out right now, you still can't deny that the best looking games right now, are on the 360. Yea, I personally do believe the PS3 will come out with insanely beautiful-looking games(like FF), but 360(Gears specifically) is looking better than anything else out right now. It is currently the most "next gen". PS3 is quickly catching up though, even with it's 1 year tardiness.

   Re: Hellraiser (Unregistered) - 2007-04-18
 » whatever!

Some RPGs need more than one disc, and it has never been a problem before with the Playstation. I don't think there will ever be a non RPG 360 game that needs more space.

Even sony's own David Jaffe said he would take blu ray out of the PS3! If XBOX had waited until they could get the blu laser diodes and factory installed HD-DVD, they'd have the same problems as sony.

I'm happy my 360 does not have HD-DVD factory installed. It does not cost double what an XBOX cost last generation and there's a sh*tload of games available!

The PS3 has no better high defination capabilities than the 360, it's just crap developers say to hype the game and the platform it's made for!

   Re: PS3Rider (Unregistered) - 2007-04-18
 » More Space is Needed

MS made the mistake of not incorporating HD-DVD into their console, as they will soon find out they need more space than 9gb on their disks. Games such as Resistance are already 18gb (check wikipedia) and some of the cgi videos didnt fit on the europeans disks due to the high amount of languages. I think we will soon see PS3 games being released on 50gb blu-ray disks

 » Wow

So many kids in here already.

The report is about FFXIII and yet posts from 2 insecure little boys so far (a and Quixand, with 666 joining in) are about the PS3 vs the 360.

No wonder Jack Thompson behaves the way he does, he simply shares the same mentality as fanboys.

   Re: Quixand - 2007-04-17
 » with all due respect

gamerfeed just stating that the Hi Def capabilities of the PS3 are indeed essential to games as mentioned on the article too which as you said pertains to FFXIII... reason why i quoted it and pasted it to my post...

simply mentioned XBox cause of all the flak Sony is getting regarding Blu Ray and how unnecessary it is. Cause I believe that FFXIII will only be the beginning of a lineup of games which will use vast media capabilities... i mean a decade ago nobody would have thought we'd be needing dvds to enjoy games..

but i get ur point... don't start to and you won't get none...

I am pumped for this game!!! I have been playing Final Fantasy XII for over 250 hours now and can't find the willpower to beat it cuz I don't know how I'll handle the wait for the next one. FFXIII will be the most incredible game anyone has seen or played--guaranteed.

The fourth page of the six. Is the scan on the top of that fourth page in-game?

If you're referring to the guy, then I would say that's probably CG. If you're referring to the page before that, where the girl is attacking, and there are command buttons on the screen, then that is in game

 » Lair – Ratchet – Warhawk – Heavenly - Killzone2 versus Halo3

* Halo 3 will be trampled and humiliated by Lair (cinema quality motion), Ratchet & Clank (Walt Disney meets Pixar), Warhawk (next-gen Unreal Tournament 3), Heavenly Word (next-gen Goddess of War 3) and Killzone 2 (next-gen Half-Life 3). ALL THESE WILL BE RELEASED IN Jul to Sep. 2007.

* Halo 3 is NOT made from scratch. Halo 3 is an updated version of Halo 2 which was out in 2004 by using Renderware engine (confirmed fact; Bungie chose this method to save huge amount of development time and budget); therefore, Halo 3 is NOT a true next-gen title. Halo 3 can’t even use X360 console’s most power. Renderware is far inferior to other advanced engines such as, Source, Unreal, CryEngine, etc.

* This is why Crapalo (Halo) 3 looks like Halo 2.5 in terms of graphics and gameplay (NO breakable buildings or vegetation, NO deformable objects, NO soft shadows, NO facial-animation, NO depth-of-field, NO motion blur, etc). This new Halo 3 alpha footage looks crappy. There're alpha footages of Gears of War and Resistance available online, unless you are blind, you must realize the fact that alpha builds are 90% same as the final versions.

* Halo 3's world is as shinny (bright, flashy with HDR lighting effects) as the one in Perfect Dark Zero. PDZ was the best looking game when it was released in 2005. PDZ and Kameo were made by Rare which is a subsidiary of Microsoft Game Studios (MGS, not the Metal Gear Solid). MGS also owns FASA (which makes Shadowrun) and Bugie (Halo 3). All these companies share all kinds of technologies (DirectX based) which are used to make X360 games. This is the biggest reason why Shadowcrap, Perfect Dark Crap, Kameo and Halo 3 have extremely similar graphical quality (artistic design).

* Bungie's officially announced in Nov. 2006 that Gears of War has too much superior graphics to Halo 3's final (retail) version (GameSpot’s editor asked “What game has better graphics, GoW or Halo 3?). If you know the definition of ‘paraphrasing’, above statement means “Halo 3 will look very much inferior to GoW in the graphics department.

* Killzone 2 is built from scratch (true next-gen); therefore, KZ2 can use most potential power of PS3 hardware. Guerrilla which is a subsidiary of Sony has 120 employees (programmers and graphics designers). The total budget for KZ2 is $21 million (for your reference, Epic spent $10 m to make Gears of War with 90 devs).

* All Sony’s internal developers and Sony’s very close world class companies share all kinds of technologies which are used for making PS3 games (OpenGL based). These top developers are those companies which make games like: MotorStorm, Metal Gear Solid 4, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank, Virtua Fighter 5, Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, White Knight Story, Tekken 6, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII & versus XIII (FF7-Advent Children was awarded as the best CG movie of all time), Lair, Uncharted-Drake's Fortune, Eight Days, Getaway, God of War 3, Jak and Daxter, Heavy Rain, Afrika, Home, LittleBigPlanet, Monster Kingdom: Unknown Realm and of course Killzone 2.

* Polyphony’s Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 is world's most popular racing game in the entire gaming history based on the number of copies sold. GT HD (4.5) demo was released in 2006; all game reviewers were surprised that GT HD was just good (80/100) when they expected that this new GT must get review scores of 98/100 just like all of its predecessors. After this shock, Polyphony officially confirmed GH HD was an upgraded version of PS2's GT 4; that's why it looks just good. Polyphony later announced that they totally scraped the whole GT HD project and working on GT 5 entirely from scratch. Bungie must take a leaf out of Polyphony’s book; Bungie should scrap Halo 3 then make it from scratch then release it in 2010.

   Re: Quixand - 2007-04-17
» a lot of anger there

i don't like shooters that much... i don't like Halo that much either.. i mean aliens and guns... Halo, Gears Of War, Lost Planet, Prey, CrackDown.. etc.. all shooters that's why i'm not into XBox...

but still Halo is a very good game which should be given credit... it has a solid fanbase and doesn't really need to prove itself anymore to anyone...

2 cents.

   Re: RastaDator (Unregistered) - 2007-04-17
 » I really

hope all these coming title for the PS3 be AAA. Im very much excited about LAIR, looking awesome both graphic and gameplay-wise.

Now I dont think is right to say that Warhawk is the next-gen (or current gen ;) UT3. I mean, dont forget that true UT3 is going to be properly released, but as always UT3 is a corridor restricted combat type of game while Warhawk looks like a much more open game, with enjoyable ground combats and awesome aerial dogfights.

   Re: Seoulfood (Unregistered) - 2007-04-17
» I agree with these responses to this post

I myself have higher hopes for my PS3 than my 360, but this comment is really uncalled for.
And going along with the comment of Halo not being next-gen because it's built on an old engine; the same can be said about FFXIII because that's built on an engine designed for the PS2.
