Toshiba to manufacture 65nm chips by next month, 45nm chips by 2009 - Image 1

Japan's Nikkei financial paper has just disclosed Toshiba's upcoming plans for their RSX chips for the PlayStation 3. According to the report, Toshiba will begin manufacturing 65 nanometer chips by next month (December). As the readers will recall, the 40 GB PlayStation 3 that was launched last month makes use of the aforementioned chipset.

By comparison, the 20 GB and 60 GB SKUs are running on a larger 90 nm chip. The smaller component is reportedly one of the factors in the console's price drop (currently US$ 399), and lower power requirements, albeit it does lack backwards-compatibility.

Further along, Nikkei also reports that Toshiba plans to manufacture an even smaller 45 nm RSX graphics chips for the PS3. No details have been announced regarding this, although the report states that the electronics manufacturer will begin production by March 2009.

That's also what I thought! :D

Indeed, the ps3 will be slim in about two years I'd say. 45nm chips would be really small chips... lol. Anyway, a lot of people tend of wait till consoles are up to their second version. A slim model would sell a lot!

The linked article didn't make the mistake of mixing up Cell and RSX...

The 40GB PS3 uses 65nm Cell but still 90nm RSX. The chip Toshiba will START MANUFACTURING (hint: chips aren't built in BEFORE they are manufactured) next month will start hitting the PS3 some time early if not mid 2008.

 » Oh by the way

Its not going to be PS3 slim, maybe the size of the chips will be smaller but the system it self will still be the same. So it won't be PS3 slim unless by then they completely change the size of the system which i doubt. But just felt like making something clear.

It's all about the greenbacks, Toshiba has slammed Blu-Ray and Sony several times and still push HD-DVD. Sony is getting a great deal or someone in Sony's purchasing deparment really fxxcked up!

Like the PS2, the best PS3s are the older models.

Long live the 60GB PS3! I found a deal on a brand new 60GB and now I have 2! Uh oh, I just pulled a Quixand!
