PS3 camperIn what PS3 fans will boo, PC fans will cheer, and potentially will become flamebait here, there, and God knows where else, a PS3 camper traded in his chance of getting a PS3 - FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE - for a $ 7,500 custom-built Falcon PC gaming rig. That little stunt was arranged by PC Gamer magazine to prove, as they say, what the finest gaming platform in the world is.

So PC Gamer prowled the campers outside the 'Frisco Sony PlayStation Store, and managed to - as they say - "convert one PS3 diehard from the dark side." They set up a PC demo booth to show off what a PC could do. The guy shown on the left is the guy who won, so to speak. And, by signing into the legally binding contract before a notary public of the City of San Francisco, he has forsaken all chances of owning a PS3 for the rest of his life in exchange for that US$ 7,500 rig with a 30" monitor at 2560x1600, with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and Nvidia 8800 GTX video card inside.

PS3 fanboys will swear that the guy sold his soul. But look at it this way: in the short run, it's a sweet deal. Why pass up the chance on on a seven-grand rig for free? Unless you're definite you can resell your PS3 for more than seven grand, a rare chance if any. It's technically a steal.

In the long run, however, the guy will have to endure the "true dark side" of what he's done:

  • Now he's locked into that never-ending spiral of component upgrades (and attitudes like "I have got to get the G90," or something). With a PS3, you're stuck with the hardware you got (aside from the swappable SATA HDD), but at least you know you're set with what you've got.
  • And he's never going to get his PS3, ever (unless he wants to break his contract). Nothing's stopping all the other PS3 campers from getting their own gaming rigs in the future either. That's got to be the most painful part of the deal PC Gamer didn't mention in the contract. See? It's always about the fine print.

I would have done it, then find a loophole in the contract, like "rent" a PS3 from a friend, or something like that. theres always a way out of a contract

Yeah at first glance it's the perfect deal huh? But a year from now that machine will be worth jack ***** compared to what it's worth now... wait another year and bam, equal machines are being sold as "Starter systems" where if he had stuck with the PS3 he could of enjoyed it for 6+ years and just bought his own gaming PC in the mean time. Now he's got legal binding documents which prevent him from enjoying titles on the PS3.

While this guy goes over the pros and cons to this decision I'll be enjoying my MGS4 and other worthy PS3 titles along side new PC titles with the PC I built. Ha! Both of best worlds sucker.

 » um...

Uh, do you even know the specs of this computer? The GPU is actually faster than the PS3's. This is not going to be obsolete in a year. Compared to this computer, the PS3 is already obsolete.

 » re: dg10050

I wasn't comparing the specs of the PS3 vs the Specs of the PC, I was stating that in a year (and then 2 years) this thing will be lacking in power to play games released in that time period. It's the same story for every PC around, simply put, it has a short life span before you must upgrade your hardware to meet requirements of new games.

That aside the GPU included in the PC will be out classed next month with the latest and greatest, 2 years from now you've if you find it shoved in between some books you wouldn't bother to even think about inserting it into a PC because of it's lack of power.

The PS3 won't require you upgrade jack s_it to play games 2, 4 maybe even 6 years from now.

He can still buy a 360, and he will have the best of both worlds.....smart guy...

 » NICE!!!!

That was a damn good deal. The graphics card alone is worth a switch seeing if you have a PC that can run it optimized. It can already be said, as many site, I do mean MANY sites, have already showed comparisons of how superior a Single Nvidia 8800 class GPU is comapred to the Xbpox 360 PS3. Gotta remember that the PS3's GPU is based on 7x techlnology & was already in production well before the announcment of the 8x (G80) line. A Single 8800GTX outperforms 7900GTX's in Sli. So that says something about the graphical ability of a PC at this moment & time. Of course, it is still a very expensive alternative to a $600 system that can hold its on, for now.

I really don't know where these rants of PC gaming is dieing come from. Seeing that top MMORPG's ALONE shatter even the top Console games in terms of sales & active players. Also, FPS'ers seem to be much more succesful on the PC end than the console side. Counter Strike players outnumber Halo 10 to 1 & I cant stand CS, it sucks lol. Microsoft broke the market with high end PC games appearing on consoles. Now console users get to enjoy popular PC games with the only sacrafice being graphically & having to use a pad. Although PS3 games wont come anywhere close to looking as good as the DX10 games will. Crysis pretty much proves this by itself. Also, the push my Microsoft with its "Game for Windows" campaign will be a boost to PC gaming sales. PC gaming is more alive now than it has even been. Most should be thankful for this as the most popular console games are taken off of ideas based on PC games.

 » lol, pads

Lets not forget the incredible versatility of a keyboard, as compared to the limited and soon to be just plain poor planning of the game pads. Between a keyboard and mouse, you have at least 10k keys and key combinations that are all easier to navigate than a controller can be. I'd also like to add in a comment about the Nostromo controller by belkin for the PC, it's turned all my games into a one-handed ordeal if properly set up.

 » Personally..

Personally, i wouldn't have done the deal, i'm not a fanboy of anything but i'd rather have the best of all worlds have my PC, PS3, 360 & Wii. You dont really need a top-of-the-line gaming machine to play most games you can buy and the standard of requirements hasn't really increased a whole awful lot lately so yeah.. I'm sweet with what i've got.

But unless i could actually find a loophole.. Sweet?

If someone tells you that they will give you something but it cost you getting something else thats a deal of the devil. He may have sold his soul.

Just someone go buy him a ps3

» PC mag didn't prove anything.

It's not just power alone that determines which machine is the better choice. Pricing, lasting appeal, features and gaming support also play important roles. Based on what I've read and seen concerning the PS3, it truly is a bargain. 7 grand just doesn't seem worth going out of my way to get a gaming experience superior to that of 3 consoles ranging between 250-600 dollars. In the end, you have to balance out your entertainment lust and your wallet.

What's stopping him from getting a PS3? Not like they have someone breathing over his shoulder every single day...

 » Read it again.

He signed a legally binding contract stating he would not come into possession of a Playstation 3. If he does, he probably stands to lose more than just the swanky rig.

And as a matter of fact they DO have people coming in to check every so often, probably as long as the company publishing the magazine exists.

i rather get a PS3.. then exchange it for that 7 grand rig.. sell it.. and then get a PS3.. and keep the rest of the money..

» i would forget the pc

I would get a ps3 and sell it on ebay for the money , to get both the PC and ps3, saw a ps3 for 10 G's.

meh, ps4 will be out in 2 years anyway or somthing stupid.
Smart move

 » Huh.

While I can't fault either the magazine or the gamer(1), I wouldn't be comfortable with giving up freedom of choice and privacy (2) for a few grand of steel and silicon even if it kept value with inflation (3).

1. THEY certainly thought the contract was a decent idea.
2. Read the article. They check up on him.
3. And no computer equipment does that.

 » stupid console gamers..

LMAO, all you'd have to do with a pc like that is use an emulator, cuz i bet that thing will run mirrors of a PS3 game easy, haha. And the comment not having to upgrade your hardware? that guy's set for about 3-5 years if he's packing dual vid cards, and at least 2 gbs of ram. And by then? Sony will be broke, or PS4 will be out (god save us). More to the point, if you REALLY think PS3 is even decent (LMFAO at you already) go watch the Crysis video. This guy gets to play that. On high setting. You probably don't. Now let THAT trade-off settle in your system.
