Blu-ray goodness in every issue - Image 1Now that's how you push a format! The days of freebies in magazines are far from over, because the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) will be getting monthly Blu-ray goodies from now on.

The deal between Future media and Sony assures that the latest issues of the magazine will be getting Blu-Ray content packed with demos and trailers. In fact, their recent press release states that "the disc will also include Hi-Definition (HD) game and movie trailers. 'Official PlayStation Magazine' will be the ONLY title to offer gamers a playable demo disc, direct from SCEE."

Matt Pierce, the magazine's publisher, was also proud of the new arrangement:

We are delighted that "Official PlayStation Magazine" will deliver to its readers a monthly playable disc, and the world's first covermounted Blu-ray disc. Future has worked closely with Sony since 1995 to offer playable demo discs for PlayStation, PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation Portable (PSP), and we will be working hard to ensure gamers get the very best content for their PS3 as well.

The first issue to get these special discs will be issue 7 of this volume's OPM, and will hit stores on June 1.

...About the official line that Sony cancelled the US mag. Since it's different publishing houses (US was Ziff/Davis), I wonder if it wasn't that Ziff/Davis just didn't want to eat the cost of the BluRay discs? In other words, maybe that will be reborn with a different publisher in about a year after Sony has dropped the price on PS3 and there are more in the market. Conversely, if Sony indeed was the instigator, it may be that they suspended this cost (again until economies of scale kick in), since they're already loosing loads of cash on the console. I mean, if the publisher isn't eating a big gulp of the cost, it could only mean Sony was. And, while you're market is small, you want to minimze as much needless expenditure as you can.

How pointless is this? Everything they are offering through the disc will probably be available through the playstation network. "what about those people without network access" you may ask. well, i'm sure if one could afford a playstation 3, then they will more than likely also be able to afford high speed internet. "what about people who live where there is no net access?" well, these people still do have a choice, just as my friend does. he has net access through his cell phone. practically all providers offer this service. it's not good for gaming but it's better than nothing, and u should still be able to download from the network, just as he does. like i said, pointless. instead of wasting their money on producing the bd-roms w/trailers and demo's, they should use that money to offer a free retro game (for ps3) every month.

What is the article writer up to anyway? This disc appears with OPM, which is a PlayStation magazine. It doesn't push any format. If it did that, it would appear on a 360 mag! Idiot.
