PlayStation 3 - Image 1

Let's face it - Sony's pulled the rug from under us. There wasn't a day where rumors and estimates of a price cut were shot down in rather judicious fashion by the company itself - and then, suddenly, they spring one on us that's three digits worth of greenbacks, an amount no one could have predicted. It was a knockout punch, and we were all caught off guard.

And now, the PlayStation 3, often parodied as something akin to a bulky cooking grill named after a legendary heavyweight boxer, is now finally getting the attention it deserves - by attention, yours truly means as selling as hotcakes. This comes from an update directly from Amazon's best seller list, where the PS3's sales rank has not only jumped from a lowly 29 to the number 1, its sales have in fact spiked up to 2800%, bumping off the formidable Wii.

2800%. The figure itself is incredible, to say the least. In the overall scheme of things, a price cut on that level is quite significant, and so is the fans' reaction (i.e. buying PS3s like a certain breakfast item).

We can only wonder then what other sort of update we'll be expecting from Sony now - will it be the cardinal truth, or simply another fake-out to set us up for the big whammy later? Only time will tell. Updates as we get them!

 » Hmm...

Perhaps I wouldn't need to get Wii anymore. As much as I like the Wii -- I'd rather get this system instead. Because more fans will get the system in it's lowered price.

ew dont get a wii you will be stuck playing 45 different versions of mario.

Indeed. Because Wii can't produced those "hi end" games. Like FFXIII, Versus XIII, Time Crisis 4 etc... And also DMC 4.

Don't get the Wii. It's not even next-gen, it's just Gamecube with an overclocked CPU and new controllers.

 » up 2800% from what?

Since it was at number 29 on the selling charts before does that mean that it sold like 250 units yesterday so that today now that its up 2800% it sold like 7000 units? 2800% is kinda vague, although it did jump to the first spot, so I guess you can say the price cut is working already...but its the first day so you can't gauge whether the cut is going to pay off over the next 6 months or more.

It's just for watching that price it will not continue like this in the next month.. but wait to christmas and watch the numbers...

Sony already managed to get the PS3 production cost into the profitable range:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aYWkGuoeuipo&refer=home

at this rate,come holiday 2007 a PS3 price-cut to 400$ is very possible

it expected,Sony is long-timehardware company with cast experience in hardware redesigning and cost-reducing

cost reduction is one of their main proffesions, just look compare the build quality between the PS3 and the 360....less than 1% failure rate against 33% and yet still managed to cost-reduce it

once the PS3 drops to 400$ with MG4,Killzone2,warhack,Lair,heavenly sword, rathchet and clank and possible surprises this E3....sales will boost even more than 2800%

MS is in a very bad position, losing in the Hardware department...losing in the Software department [Vista is crap...latest search analysis says most people are making search topics on Linux Ubunto distro ]

dont wait....go Ubuntu,s webpage:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Download Ubunto linux....and kiss good-bye to endless spyware, freezes crashes and cash-spending for windows license and anti-virus maintance cost software

dont wait.....get ubunto

i honestly would like to goto linux but the fact that its complicated scares me.... lol i can barely use my yellow dog linux... microsft has me blinded with windows and plus windows pc has all of the games anyway lol

dont use Yellow-dogs...get Ubuntu linux with Wine...a software that allows you to run many windows application on Linux even adobe photoshop

its Simple, widely compatible and the most popular, youl find endless topics in google

its fast, spyware proof and constatly improving with a new-release every 6 months

so if you want to try....get ubuntu linux

Microsoft days of OS monopoly is numbered...and they know it

thats why they want to open new revenue streams from other markets.....as for the OS market its just a matter of time before Windows end

beleive it...

look for fedora 7... it's not complicated to install and is more eyecandy than the other linux... ubunto is good too... yellow dog is just need more... a lot indeed... but works well in the PS3... the bad about linux is that isn't compatible with my needs... thats why I'm stuck with vista... that only change the visual... ugh... when microsoft will learn that eyecandy isn't everything?

a $400 dollar price cut... i dont think so :D

$99 for a next gen system, blu-ray player, wifi, motion controllers, most powerful console, home, web browser, psp connectivity, etc etc. No way.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-10
» just look at the PS2's cost reduction history

Ever taken apart different versions of PS2s? The earliest ones are very well made, with cast aluminum heatsinks, self contained DVD drives that are reliable and easily adjustable, and more individual parts so you can only replace what's broken. Later versions went with DVD drive boards integrated into the main board, cheaper less effective extruded aluminum heatsinks, and a crappy DVD drive that requires adjustment of 2 seperate wheels for laser alignment. Did they do that to make it harder to fix intentionally? Don't get me started on the PS2 slim, which has overheating problems since there's no fan and the electronics shoved in a tiny case. Problems which sony won't admit to, and is only coved by a 90 day warranty.

The XBOX 360 is getting much better, the PS3 will only get worse from a quality standpoint. New 65nm chips are coming to XBOX, a price reduction is imminent, and current 360 owners have nothing to worry about except maybe not having a system for a couple weeks at the worst.

   Re: MTK (Unregistered) - 2007-07-10
 » To Common Sense

Common Sense,

You never cease to amaze me with your pointless logic and your inane arguments.

So basically, from your argument, you are saying that later versions of Sony consoles get worse while later versions of Microsoft consoles get better.

I didn't imagine that even a fanboy as lacking in logic and reason as you are could come up with such a pointless argument just to bash what is a truly spectacular machine by Sony while comparing it with what is the very definition of a poorly designed MS product (yes, I'm saying this even though I own a working 360 - I'm not as blindly biased as you are: then again, I own both consoles as opposed to just one and so I'm in a position to speak from first-hand experience, unlike you who speaks purely from irrational prejudice).

Also, please don't bother saying that XBox 360 will solve its hardware problems and will get better. Even if they manage to do so, that is not going to help the current 10-11 Million or so 360 owners is it, unless Microsoft agrees to replace consoles en masse. I don't think even a blindly faithful MS fanboy like you could be so naive as to think that.

Well, you did your bit to bash the PS3, I did my bit to deconstruct your illogical argument, even though most sane people here would agree that your arguments are pretty senseless anyway.

Regards,
MTK

 » rofl

I love that. "not having a system for a couple weeks"

Instead, MS sends over someone to rape you in the ass.

I recall the first Xbox 360s suffering from some sort of problem with the DVD drive. Well we all know MS solved that one...by making said DVD drives scratch up some discs.

Funny how the Red Ring of Death fiasco is really only picking up speed now, a year and a half AFTER the consoles launch. Now is that because MS couldn't design a console to run for longer, or did someone take a piss in the latest batch of 360 CPUs?

   Re: Lamp (Unregistered) - 2007-07-10

That is why Mister NoComputing Sense loves his 360. It gets broken all the time and he sends it to Microsoft sends him a man to rape him in the ass all day long just the way he loves it. Then when the 360 comes back from the shop it's bye bye mystery raper and he gets upset and throws tantrums over here.

 » Good for Sony

Im glad to see sony is doing a good job with a very great product like the playstaion 3. Its unfortunate that others like Microsoft cant come up with a good console like the xbox 360, as wee all know it may be a good console but what good is it if the consumer has to play with fear knowing that if the play their xbox will die? It just something a consumer cant do even if microsoft has givin it a 3 year warranty, people hate having hassles in their consoles as well as technology. This is very goo for sony. Congrast to sony, and microsoft please make better consoles and Operating systems next time, just a thought.

From joystiq... "it didn't gain 2700% in sales, but in rank. Two completely different things"!! So it has nothing to do with sales of the PS3.

 » My Math is Fine!

So is my education! If he said it increased it's rank %2900 over one week vs. it's increase in rank over the previous week then he would have been correct.

Let's say that it started at 20th. The ultimate goal is obviously 1st. If it moves to 10th it didn't increase by %1000, it only made it half way to 1st which is %50. Now let's say that it starts at 20th and moves to 19th the next week. If it moves to 1st in the 3rd week then it had an increase of %1800 more than it's increase the previous week. But how do we know what is meant when only half of a statement is posted? Don't call people stupid for pointing out glaring errors or incomplete info in a post! Is that all that you could think of was to insult my intelligence? That in itself shows a lack of intelligence on your behalf.

It is all about relativity. Everything is relative to something else it just matters how you look at it.

Don't talk about dropouts until you know what you are talking about yourself!

 » foolish sony

I'd have put the price up and advertise a whole lot better. A lot of people will think the PS3 is no better than the Wii unless they advertise the PS3 as better. Placing the retail price below the production costs was a bad idea from the start. I would quite happily have spent £100 ($200) more on my PS3.

thats 2800% you moron

   Re: ackeejag (Unregistered) - 2007-07-10
 » FAIL!!!

did we not go over percents last week. percent is far different from total. 10 is 100% of 100 so 200% of 10 is 20, understand? so if they sold 1,000,000 then sales would have been 28,000,000 with 2800%. i doubt it was that much but it was probably a good amount and any unit is good for sales.
   by Toby (Unregistered) - 2007-07-10
 » sigh

Look, 1% of X is equal to 1/100 of X so 2800%= X/100*2800 which is equal to X*28, where X equals amount of PS3 sales

Got it?? I'm sure you knew dat already but you should say something that stupid on the net (proof read your comments!!!)
