Half-Life 2 - Image 1Developing a single game for three consoles helps in increasing awareness of the pros and cons of each platforms, and Valve's Gabe Newell of Half Life 2: Orange Box (for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360) is no exception.

Newell has beef against all the three consoles that he worked on for the great-looking Half Life 2 installment, and even his preferred platform, the PC, is not spared. Games for Windows Live is one of his pet peeves towards Microsoft, saying that the software mogul still continues to neglect gaming on PC despite the innovations Vista had presented. "I don't even know what it is," said Newell about Games for Windows Live.

He does acknowledge that Microsoft is still way over its head with its current Red Ring of Death issues, which he supposed is the reason why there is a lack of marketing for the PC at the moment. Nevertheless, he prefers developing games for the PC than any other platform. "It's a great platform. The Internet capabilities are much more mature and the graphics you find on consoles are essentially derivative of the PC and sales on the PC are great."

On the other hand, Newell didn't have a more enjoyable experience with developing a game for the PS3, saying that Sony's console was not developer-friendly. He supposed that Sony didn't get enough developer input before putting out their console in the market, and that certain flaw hampered the PS3's hardware potential despite the powerful Cell Processors.

Despite the flaws of each console, Valve's Half Life 2: Orange Box will be out for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in October. Stay tuned for more updates!

I heard this terd whine before about developing on anything except the PC, it's nothing new.

Honestly, lots of devs make much better games than he and his team have... and they don't take 6+ years to f'n do it.

Itagaki said it best when he said devs should pack up and leave the industry if they b!tch about any system being hard to dev for, especially the PS3, because it proves their incompetents as devs and that the industry is better off without them.

I'm amazed that Newell took the time not to stick a Twinkie in his fat mouth to say that. The poor baby thinks that the 360 and PS3 are too hard, whaaaaa!!!

 » LOSER

I heard this fat bastard call the ps3 a mistake from the beginning citing that they they should just scrap it and tell their customers sorry and move on. I'm pretty sure it's just more than he can tackle. he probably looked at it for five minutes and shoved it aside from frustration like a 2 year old.

The industry most certainly would not be better off without Newell, he's only made two of the most revered PC games of all time (HL and HL2).

And if "lots" of devs make better games than Valve, please name "lots". I consider "lots" to be at least ten, if not more.

Didn't think you could do it.

A funking pc is not a console!!!!!
Idk why he even compares them.
And wat does the red ring of death have to do with this??
And the ps3 game are not hard to develop. they are not used to the new technology.
PC isnt al that great netheir. It aint a home entertanment. its more like nerd entertainment.
Who would actually spend 1000 bucks to upgrade their computers??? Nerdy people.
The pc doesnt have any next gen dvd format.
Its stupid.

» xbox is lame because it breaks

mr. fonko is retard. how do you think games are made on engine pc. plus is way better to have. you have enough storage on bluray disc. metal gear , unreal 3, final fantasy , time crisis, resident, and dmc will benefit more because it will have enough space and more stuff than xbox. who really wants a broken xbox. i see you like to erase comments from 1408. I consider xbox a lower down pc cost system. Guess it be more fun to gear of war running on MAC AND PC than xbox version less content. plus pc games are cheaper than xbox games. halo took forever to drop price

» Nah, you're the lame one

"I consider xbox a lower down pc cost system"

Then you're stupid. Sorry, but it's true. Besides, the last time I check, it was the PS3 which was doing everything it can to act like a PC (including Linux).

And since when has it been announced that RE4 and DMC4 will have more content on the PS3 versions? The structure of these two games make them more than suitable for multiple DVDs IF it proves necessary, so I expect both versions to be identical. In fact, if we look at other multi-format games, it's quite possible than the 360 versions will be slightly superior!

 » i agree with tank

Bigger Tank that is. :P

Re: Biggest Tank (Unregistered) - 2007-08-26
 » I really doubt that

Because if indeed both these games are pressed on multiple disks on the 360 then both PS3 versions will be on one single Blu-Ray disc giving that edge to the PS3 version. Also let's put it this way what if a person owns both a PS3 and a 360. And what if both games look identical and play identical but the 360 version is on 2 disks and the PS3 version on one disc. Which version do you think he will choose?

Re: Bigger Tank (Unregistered) - 2007-08-26
» You're talking about convenience only!

Yes being on one disk is more convenient, but that doesn't make it better. If a gamer has both consoles and each version are identical, then he's likely to go for the single disk PS3 version. But if (as seen with *many* multi-format games so far) the 360 version is slightly better, either in terms of framerate, graphics or both, then such a gamer may go for the 360 version instead!

» Why do I love my XBOX even though it is made so poorly

I love my XBOX. It's a great stress reliever and a lot of fun. The problem is that I've only had it since December 2006 and I'm now on my second repair request. Oh, don't think I'm alone. The Internet is full of other poor saps out there with repeatedly failing systems.

I guess this isn't news to Microsoft, either... since they recently elected to extend the 1 year warranty to 3 years, and refund any money to people spent repairing the "red ring of death" that is so common on these units. Hopefully when mine is returned to me they'll have replaced the defective parts in it this time.

I just want my XBOX back! Halo 3 comes out soon!

 » newbs

@hush please stfu you newb, let itagaki say all he wants. His games suck nuts, there design is 10 years old-*****ty story. BTW itagaki is nothing more then a designer where as Newell is a programming god, Carmack(ID) also stated this exact same thing. Calling a dev incompetent because they dont like working on ps3 is ignorant, its tool just flat out suck.
@fonko....please go shoot yourself and rid the word of your idiocy. Your right a PC isnt a console, ITS WAY MORE. And the get compared sometimes because, guess what, PCS PLAY GAMES AS WELL!! And yes ps3 are by far harder to dev for, complete unique cpu architecture, crap tools in general, ask any big dev whos not in sonys pocket(itagaki) and they tell you that. Really wtf do you mean its not home entertainment, a pc can do far more then a ps3/360 can. Im sorry your just poor and cant afford a decent rig, maybe you need to get a job? or maybe your daddy needs a better job. PC doesnt have a next gen dvd format.....wow please just shoot yourself you ignorant dip*****

So (only one that I know of) can play both next-gen format (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD) and they are making PCs with a Blu-Ray Drive.

So only one thing to say....BANKAI....

 » Offtopic: That's a conspiracy, alright

That's right! It's a perfect plan by Microsoft... The Red Rings Of *Rebirth*(TM):

1) MS purposefully made its console start breaking around this time, they knew that this was going to be the only way to win big.

2) MS purposefully *do not* repair consoles sent to them (albeit they could) - hence they break repeatedly.

3) Everybody know, that Halo 3 will be a money cow for MS. Nearly *all* of the Xbox 360 owners *will* buy it. It also can, and *would* sell consoles.

4) So, when the time comes, MS plan on keeping as much people's consoles as they can "in repair", while the Halo-hungry crowd would go, and buy *another* console, just to play that game.

5) So, that means that number of MS consoles on market would nearly double, and Xbox 360 could become the instant winner of this generation of console wars.

There's only one question -- what are people going to do with second console? That's easy - they can give it away as a gift, or sell it for a lower price, what could turn more undecided people on it's side.

Throw in an official price cut, and you just can't help but wonder - who was the great mastermind behind this mischievous plan... ;-)

PS. thanks goes to no name123 for his post directing me at this reasoning: "I just want my XBOX back! Halo 3 comes out soon!"

 » weak

There is no such thing as hard to develop for hardware, only whiny, pathetic, incompetent developers who are used to have everything delivered to them on a silver platter.

Note to talentless developers, before saying something is bad or impossible to develop for, take a good look at what others are doing with it (*cough*) MGS4 (*cough*) and then realise that there is nothing wrong with the hardware, only your ability to use it. *****ing pathetic whiny loosers.

Re: Nasty Gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-08-27
» And what have you achieved?

It's usually life's losers, i.e. those that have done nothing in their lives except talk, who like to write about others being 'whiny, pathetic, incompetent'. Well those whiny, pathetic, incompetent devs are the ones who created Half-Life and Half-Life 2, so I think their word counts for a lot, and therefore means far more than comments from an insignificant nobody on a forum who talks BS about something he knows nothing about.
