Thanks to readers ct-boy and X=BlueRaven, we've found a new snippet for those who'd love to clean their PlayStation 3's insides without ever having to take it apart (hence voiding the warranty). There's a video in circulation that demonstrates how to access a fan test function that's apparently found in the console's more recent models.
According to the clip, the function can be activated by powering off your console, and holding the eject button when you power it back on. You'll know that test has kicked in when the PS3 emits an uncharacteristically loud whirring noise, like a car revving up its engine. This test also has the added benefit of blowing out any dust that may have accumulated in the unit, ensuring that it won't overheat. We're not sure if this was Sony's original intent, but it certainly eases up on maintenance. The bad news is that this fan test only appears to work on 40 GB units - users with different models report that the test didn't work for them even after running the proper steps. The video is available for viewing below, in case you're interested on trying the test on your console. Happy viewing! |

Doing this could burn out the fan's motor.

pretty sure they wouldn't put that feature if it would damage your ps3.

turn off ur monitor but keep ur speakers on...
ask a friend "guess what game console you're hearing?"
10 out of 10 they would say XBox 360.

» I tryed this on my 40g this morning
this does work,. and I can only assume considering how simple this is to do, that this isnt a glitch, or a bug.
I figure this is something sony has put in the newer consoles firmware as a means to help technical support.
this probably has a load of uses, from getting dust off the lens to cooling down the system if it happend to reach a certain temp. ' I assume if a ps3 over heats, instead of just freezing up. this will automaticly happen.

» @ psppakki
I doubt you can get it in an update as its built into the hardware (otherwise it wouldnt work on the 40GB's).

» It works on other systems also:
How to run fan test on 20/60/80gb PS3 SKU:
* Turn PS3 off.
* Flip the PS3 over so fan side is on bottom and non fan side (with HDD socket) is on top.
* Turn on your PS3.
* Hold it for roughly 40-60 seconds.
* Done!!!
* Flip back over when done, and turn off PS3.

» Do not attempt this
You are blocking the PS3 fans from doing what they are intended to do. Doing this will result in your console overheating. The fans will speed up in an attempt to compensate for the increase in temperature. If you have any sense, do not attempt what lilmetal has posted.
Also, the 40GB's hardware is different to the other models. This is probably why it is not in other models.

» hang on
You hold it in the air, keeping the fans running.

prevention is better than cure, too bad those millions of dead 360's didnt have such feature.
and even today microsoft refuses to fix the dreaded design flaw.
btw it doesnt work on my launch gen 20gb (updated to 250gb) japan model PS3. it does force a stubborn disc out though. if there is a disc that wont come out, holding the eject button will force a spit out of the disc.

You are still forcing the system to heat up. You can't deny that the system gets hot when doing it and the hotter it gets, the faster the fans spin. Even if you are cleaning the dust out, you are overheating the system and repeated use of the method can be risky.
