We're not sure if this is real, but if you experienced homebrewers and hackers out in internet land know what to make of this, we'd certainly like your opinion. There is now a video circulating of what looks like a PS3 ISO loader known as Ferrox v1.0.

Now, if this video is to be believed, it's running Ridge Racer 7without any problems. Strangely enough, this doesn't actually look like the Paradox thing being beta tested, so we're a bit curious, especially since they say at the end that it works with all firmware versions. What is Naoneo's YouTube video all about then?

If you happen to have the definitive word, and can back it up with info, let us know!

this doesn't look real at all...
I'd like to know what on earth they actually did to run an iso loaded apart from having a bad quality youtube video where they're messing with the menu, screen goes black, writing appears... screen goes black... game appears...
Easily edited, can't be real

"dude", this looks so fake personally... I had the understanding that no iso loader information would be released until the March euro release so Sony wouldn't patch it...

I'm buying my own games. I get far more pleasure out of carefully selecting the top titles and buying them. This makes be get the most out of them. If I just download games I try them for 5 mins, then flick to the next iso. BORING.

 » could be real

If you look closer they are changing the OS from PS3 to Other OS which means they made their own OS that runs these games. So if they did do this that would mean sony would have like no way of telling who is using this because it just looks like another OS and thus can't cut you off from the online like xbox does.

   Re: xche78x - 2007-02-05
 » something ive heard

if you use OTHEROS the main ps3 OS locks the RSX chip, so for now its impossible. linux cannot access the RSX nor any programs thats are run like it. so how can you make a PS3 ISO game loader run without RSX? if that program is inside the ps3 main XMB and loaded like Devhook or any like it then that may get my attention. and fyi whatever you do on your unit, the online server can always check malicious wares on your console. these corporations are not dumb you know.
   by Vietone - 2007-02-04
 » Might be Real

Yeah if you lok closely they are booting into the OtherOS.

This could mean they found an exploit that allows you to open an Image in the OtherOS and send it to the Real PS3 OS. This might be possible since you can run the PS3 OS from Linux.

If he PS3 game runs entirely from Linux, then they might have found a way to get drivers for the RSX to work. They would also have to have found a way to pair up a controller through Blu-tooth in Linux unless its connected with a USB cord.

Im keeping an open Mind about this one.

 » Linux,

Linux was gonna be a problem to begin with. Although i highly doubt you'll need Linux installed to run this, its probably exploiting the open sourced side of the PS3, finding the connections between the cell and RSX, tap those 2 together and fake the "game OS". Its like psp's devhook, you run the game OS expect your just emulating it but the actual system thinks your running the game OS

 » sure fake...

Look fat32 cant handle rr 7 can it? only ntfs can store up to that high...

   Re: Vietone - 2007-02-04
 » You know nothing

If its stored on the internal drive, it can be as big as it wants to. I don't know if anyone knows what partition the PS3 OS uses, but when you partition for Linux, you can use any format you want. If its Linux, probably ext2 or ext3.

The PS3 can store big files internally for Game Data, so to say its fake because it cant hold it is false.

   Re: lin4win (Unregistered) - 2007-02-05
 » Read more books

Why are you assuming its fat32????
1. fat32 is an old predated dos/windows file system
2. linux uses ext2/3 reiser, etc..which can handle as much as 2terabytes
3. theres many kinds of filesystems out there, that includes PFS, and is not capped to only 4gb per file

 » why endorse pirated games

to be honest, things like this will destroy the gaming industry, why have pirated games, becasue doing this your robbing the bussiness, and if it continues to the extreme, there will be no games industry, i know this all to extreme, but i get angry when people start downloading or buying illegal copy of games.
But i can't tell if it real, but if it is, should we )TRUE GAMERS) really be happy about this????

   Re: Peter (Unregistered) - 2007-02-04
» Every system has had pirated games

Some people buy games, and others don't. The latter are NOT a part of the market, and so have no effect on it.

Consider that every PSX ever made could play copies without any hardware modification via the double swap, and then consider how successful it was. The N64 had almost no piracy (the cartridge emulators were too expensive), and that basically fell flat on it's face.

It's also worth noting that despite all the noise that's being made by the industry, the fact is that prices are _lower_ in territories with higher piracy levels (a fact that should suprise nobody with any knowledge of economics...)

The only harmful effect is when the availability of pirate copies reduces the size of the market to a level where a certain title becomes not worth producing.

   Re: Joe (Unregistered) - 2007-02-05
 » nes/snes

games have been pirated for years, the nes and snes and all that have been pirated for ages, just because companies found ways to block or try to block it like on psp doesnt mean the gaming industry is suddenly falling apart, there are thousands upon thousands of people that dont know about pirating games or iso or custom firmware or any of that, that buy all their games, some people buy so may they say its pointless to even use iso because they have all the games they could ever want. so my point is, just because a few thousand people that know how to play pirated games dont buy them, doesnt mean that a whole industry will fall apart, they have the other millions that will buy their games.

This hack is indeed NOT fake. As you can see, we have created our own otheros.bld file, that loads a hacked version of the linux kernel. It then allows you to simply select a Image file. The File extensions that can be used are .iso and .img. The following games has been tested:

-Resistance Fall of Man
-Madden NFL 07
-Ridge Racer
-Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07
-NBA 2K7

Resistance Fall of Man Shows Slight lag because of the size of the image.

 » Apparently Real

The super quick loading times would suggest it was running from the hard drive as opposed to the disc (unless the blu-ray drive IS that quick), but its not really easy to see whats going on. We've had Ferrox post and say that its real, but we all know how easy it is to post some low quality, poorly lighted video on youtube and claim it shows something amazing. Though I kinda hope it is real... :-)

its totaly fake if you even want me to consider this real without releasing the thing then dont black out the screen in between every change in image. they just show the xmb then black then a little title screen and some other bs then black then cut to a shot of ridgeracer playing. add a little creative editing and boom your a hacker lol if you want me to belive this invest in some lighting and dont edit your movie at all

I think this is real because she is a homebrew developer and has been working on hacking ps3 linux for some time now she knows alot about this stuff and other groups have already found a flaw so there's a chance naoneo did to.

 » gone baby, gone!!!

Funny, I get here, go to look at the vid, and it's gone. I wonder why. Now, I don't wanna go to one side or another. People have *****ty cameras sometimes, I give them that. And yeah, it's a little hard to believe that you are running an actual prog when there are no lights (then again, like I said, the vid is gone, so I am just going off of descriptive reading). But why would the video be taken down? Either a. someone is ashamed of themselves for trying to be "4w350m3 h4x0rz" (I hate the crappy elitists...they are so damned annoying) and faking a bad vid, or b. someone actually got wind of this, and tried to shut it down before anyone else could see. Now, knowing youtube, it's probably the latter. They leave copyrighted ***** up all thetime for months, so why not this...It may be real, maybe not, but my point is (and I have one, I swear): somebody saw this, got scared because they know its possible, whether actually done or not, and complained to the craps at youtube. I hate pirating games. Pirate movies, pirate music, but for the sweet love of christ, leave the games alone!!!

 » Paradox

You are going to see fake $#!7 like this being spread around for the next few weeks, 'til Paradox put their loader out there.

One of the daed giveaways that this is fake is not the crapiness of the vid, but the fact that this looks NOTHING like the Paradox beta loader, as the article at the top oof the page says.

What are the chances of their being two completely different ways of booting ISOs from the hard-drive?

   by Joe (Unregistered) - 2007-02-05
 » Its real

if you zoom into full screen you can see the stand that the tv is on and it never moves, so im convinced its real.

by New Evil (Unregistered) - 2007-02-05
 » The TV

What has the fact that the TV, or it's stand, never moves got to do with this being fake or not?

All you see is the screen ... they could have edited a video or DVD, then played it on the TV.
