WIP: PlayStation 3 firmware downgrader, Infectus needed - Image 1

PlayStation 3 owners, heads up! We've just gotten word about a work-in-progress project that will, in theory, downgrade your Sony PS3's firmware. You'll be needing a PS3 that sports an Infectus modchip to make the downgrader work though.

We've been getting a lot of news regarding different dev teams' progresses in cracking the PlayStation 3 code, and well, they all look promising. We've seen the decrypting of the EBOOT.BIN of game discs, the modded USB PS3, and the alpha build of the Backup Launcher, among others. Now, we've got something to flash Sony's console and downgrade it when the need arises. We'll quote NDT (the one who posted about the said hack) on the project's use:

Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to "downgrade" to the version you need.

It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.

According to NDT, they will not be releasing the downgrader unless an exploit that needs a different firmware comes along. Interesting, eh? We'll keep you posted on more updates regarding this so stay tuned.
