Square Enix - Image 1Following his shocking announcement with Microsoft in E3 2008, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada was interviewed  about his company's policies about releasing on this generation's gaming platforms. Wada stressed the importance of dealing calmly with multiple business partners and said that this is an age of platform neutrality.

Wada said that their main consideration in choosing platforms where they release games is the status of hardware in respective territories. He explained how this line of thinking eventually led them to develop Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) for the Xbox 360.

"In Japan we know that the Xbox 360 isn't really that strong yet, but for me I feel very calm about dealing with any company, and we're not partnering exclusively with any particular company," Wada told Games Industry.

The Square Enix president added "in North America Microsoft is doing very well with its hardware, and for that reason it's a very important partner for us."

Wada pointed out that times have changed and his company must do what is necessary to cope with this gaming generation's demands.

"We're now in the age of the multi-platform," he commented. "But depending on age and territory, users have different tastes."

He concluded by saying that these times are very tough for developing games on just one platform. He reiterated their goal is to reach the biggest audience possible and to have more people enjoy their products.

 » Actually...

Now that I think about it. Square has always gone where they think they can make the biggest buck!

When they started it was with Nintendo who was king at the time (NES) and then moved with the SNES and then jumped to the PS1 as they saw it surge ahead. Once the PS2 hit (and never stopped) they kept to that platform. The DS blew dust in the PSP's face and then Square all of a sudden had a slew of DS FF games. Now as Sony sits behind the completitors a bit in terms of units sold, we've got square jumping around. It just makes sense no? Square has and will always be a company completely driven by the dollar.

If that were the truth, they'd have been multiplat since the dawn of the multi-console age.

 » Wow.

Hush, you are absolutly right. People get so crazy when 3rd party developers jump to different consoles. *** forbid a company trying to stay competitive and make a buck or two on a different console. Sometimes Sony fanboys really don't get the big picture. If you don't like a console then don't buy it. If you own multiple consoles then buy the games you want for it. But don't judge a company for making a decision to not be exclusive. They have workers to pay who have families to support and bills like the rest of us. I'm getting my copy of FFXIII on XBOX 360 because I'm a fan and that's the console I own. I wouldn't ever buy a PS3 for just one game but now they just earned a sale for their decision. Just like I have my copy of FF III, IV (just released on the DS) and FF 1-6 on GBA. And if FFVII just so happens to be downloadable on XBLA, I'll buy that too. So yes, Square has been multiplatform for a while, they just get to choose which platforms to release it on. They aren't stupid. -V

This is the multi-platform generation...but SO4 is still exclusive to the 360.

Just like FFvXIII is only coming to PS3. The guy is contradicting himself.

 » Not Only That

But they also have Infinite Undiscovery as a 360 exclusive title as well.

No hes is not contradicting himself. They are not Sony Microsoft or nintendo exclusive. They may have EXCLUSIVE GAMES to a certain console but your NOT seeing all the exclusive games on ONE console. So try to read the right way next time plz. Oh and vs.13 is on the backburner until 13 is out. So its still up in the air whether it will be multi or not. Star Ocean 4 does not say exlusive to 360 either so its in the air as well. EXCLUSIVE games in this generation change this generation constantly. Look at Lost Planet, bioshock and a few others. at one time they were exclusive but now they were considered timed exclusives.

Doing very well with it's hardware? I lol'd.

Anyways, Square Enix sux at making games. All the RPGs that they have currently announced will be garbage. There hasn't even been a good console Final Fantasy game since PS1 anyways.

I think this generation I would rather have MMORPGs (or MMO games in general) than these mediocre ones that tri-ace & square enix are milking & forcing down people's throat.

This is what I mean. Ignorance isn't bliss, it's ignorance. You can like a system or hate it. But to deny facts? There are more 360's out than PS3's true or false? When a game releases is it more likely to sell more on 360 or PS3? You people base your comments on your opinions rather than facts. And it's "anyway" not "anyways". Start watching your blu-ray movies with the subtitles on. You might learn how to spell. -V

Yes, there are more 360's than PS3s, but that gap has been closing for some time. The PS3 outsold the 360 weekly world-wide for 37 weeks straight since the end of 2007, true or false? I don't deny that square will get even more money multi-platform, but making the PS3 seem like it's in a worse situation than it actually is is silly.

 » Whose saying that ... ?

I don't think anyone is saying that the PS3 is in a worse situation, I think they are saying based on pure numbers that potentially they can sell more on the x360 than the PS3 because currently they more than double the sold consoles in the North American market compared to the PS3. Granted, they have been catching up, but considering the cost to develop games these days, it does make sense to go multi-platform. They'll enjoy success on either platform, so it's a financial sound move to bring it to both.
