We'll miss you. It's times like these that make game bloggers and journalists like myself cry. Mostly, it's because magazines are the format that brought the love of gaming to the forefront of many gamers' hearts. That is why it saddens me to say that the US version of "Official PlayStation Magazine" will be printing its final issue in January 2007.

According to a statement by Ziff Davis, its American publisher, it seems the magazine doesn't fit the strategic vision of the company. Known by many readers to be the magazine that always has a demo disc of goodies inside, the PlayStation 3's online capabilities have apparently made the idea of demo discs obsolete.

Scott McCarthy, President of the Ziff Davis Game Group, explained the effect of the PS3's online capabilities on the market. "With this next generation of game consoles," he said, "the days of having to bundle a disc with a magazine to distribute games-related content are over. And the disc has clearly been a major driver for consumer interest in premium-priced, platform-specific magazines in the past, when the magazine disc was the only way gamers could get such content."

We're all going to miss the American "Official PlayStation Magazine". Hopefully, it's charm and words might still live on through the PS3, as the Ziff Davis Game Group is going to work with Sony to bring original content specifically for the PS3. Whether that means we'll see a PS3 version of the OPM remains to be seen, but it's a nice thought nevertheless.

I loved OPM for it's demos. I can see why they would leave. Sadly I have dial up and wont be able to go online with any next gen console. +(
Well there goes my demos (except for PSP demos)

The one thing that I didn't like is that it was so biased for sony products, personally I like truthful reviews.

yea well sony is the new dreamcast you know. I feel sorry for all the fools who are buying a dying console for the overpriced ammount. Dont feel bad though, you can still get a wii or 360 (which are both better I might add). Enjoy your dvd player that plays failed formats!

Are those guys CRAZY?! Why are they going to discontinue the magazine?! I'm going on a strike! Who's with me?!

   Re: [BOT] Bob - 2006-11-14
 » They won't care

Because they're discontinuing; you know quiting. So it wouldn't matter if you boycotted a product that they stopped selling.
   by nEcRo64x - 2006-11-14
 » Probably a good thing

You can find reviews anywhere on the net, there are enough magazines too. All OPM provided was a demo disc. If PS3 has as many downloadable demos as often as OPM provided each month them that would be awesome.

I read video game magazines a lot, but i didn't really read OPM. I always thought it was a good magazine when I did read it.

Same here - I also read games mags a lot, although I tend to concentrate on PC mags. With this in mind, I would say that PC owners have been able to download the demos available on that system for years.

However, it hasn't stopped publishers in the UK printing games review magazines, simply because they realise that its not all about the demos. People still like to read interesting and informative articles, and I personally like to keep my mags, so I can return to them whenever I like if I fancy a quick read, or need to check a review of a game I might have seen.

Also, despite the fact that all of the consoles are going to be able to hook up to the internet, not everyone will -

1/ Have a broadband connection
2/ Want to read online reviews
3/ Want to spend hours on end downloading demos that may well be a waste of time and effort.

I'm speaking from a UK point of view of course, but I'd have thought the same would probably apply to US playstation owners...

Hmm well this is not very good news... how will i get information about playstation. They'll probably have a magazine, just no demo. Good news is, it'll prolly be cheaper because of no demo inside.

Yeah, your a journalist... pfft.

   by DigiTM (Unregistered) - 2006-11-15
 » What?

What I don't get is why they could not figure out a way to work with it and produce an online magazine to subscribe to, that people can download stuff to their ps3 as bonus material.

Like an online PS3 magazine subscription thing, for bonus material

People can still buy it at a price off the Sony marketplace or something, or whatever 3rd party system they may establish. but it would be sold individually instead of all as a whole bonus set to the subscription cost.

 » No Way!

Just don't include the Demo Disc!!!!!!

The magazine was great, I just loved reading it and getting the demos, but I can live without the demos...

Its so nice to see brilliantly printed images of games yet to come out for the playstation. Seriously, just remove the Demo Disc!!!!!!
