PS3

Ok, enough with all the doom and gloom, right now the PS3 is reeling from a somewhat lackluster E3 showing and the negative publicity that comes with announcing a high priced piece of hardware. It's time to put put some things in perspective.

The real reason behind all the hubbub is that for the first time in ten years of being on top Sony appears vulnerable, and Microsoft and Nintendo fanboys are relishing every second. Appearances can be deceiving.

PS3

1) The PS3 games at E3 may not have looked leaps and bounds above what's on the 360, but there are months of development time left, titles like Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Resistance: Fall of Man already look fantastic.

2) The only 360 game I saw on the show floor that really impressed me and that made me want a 360 was Gears of War. At the Sony booth I had fun with Motorstorm, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword and Resistance: Fall of Man, heck just days after E3 I found myself wishing I could get my hands on them again. I felt no such pining for most of the 360 games, Crackdown? Shadow Run? Saints Row? Please.

3) Nintendo isn't a threat (no offense), they've successfully targeted a different demographic and aim to coexist with Sony and Microsoft, that's why the "PSWii" and "Wii60" avatars are so popular all of a sudden. While the Wii is going to be fun, there are certain epic experiences you just won't be able to get on it.

Wii60 - Image 1    Wii60 - Image 2

4) The controller will be a hit, I know because I've held it. For all this talk of innovation the fact is most of us still play games the same way, with a standard controller (why do you think Ninty's releasing a "shell" for the WiiMote?) Many would agree that the Dual Shock design is perfect, which is why there was such a big ruckus when the boomerang pad was shown, why break what 'aint broke right? Sony's new controller keeps all the best bits of the old Dual Shock while infusing added functionality and control via the L2, R2 trigger buttons and tilt sensitivity. And all this noise about Sony copying Nintendo? Who really cares, Sony "copied" the analog stick and rumble feature from the N64 controller and implemented a better solution, who's to say the same won't be the case here?

PS3 Controller

5) Sony has the most powerful hardware. Sorry Microsoft fanboys but it's true, and even you know it, right now you're going through the same denial Sony fanboys went through when the original Xbox specs were announced. The evidence might not be so apparent just now, but it will become so in the future, this first generation of launch titles is looking just as good, if not a little better than the second generation of 360 titles. That says something.

PS3

6) You'll get used to the price, and realise it's probably worth it. Considering what you get in the package, a blu-ray player, 60GB hard drive, the ability to run Linux and homebrew, wifi, memory card slots, a fully fledged media centre and the most powerful gaming machine ever to grace God's green earth, $600 really isn't that steep.

7) Sony still has the biggest guns. There's just no challenging Sony's lineup, let's quickly run though a list of titles that traditionally debut on Sony hardware:

Onimusha: We haven't heard a peep yet, but you can bet it's in development and if it's predecessors are anything to go by, it'll blow us away.Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry: Personally, I say to hell with all the rumors, this one's coming to the PS3 first and it'll most likely stay there. DMC was notably absent at E3, and now we know why. Come the Tokyo Game Show we'll get our hands on a playable build of this delightfully devilish dish.

Ratchet and Clank: The short clip we've seen looks amazing, Insomniac are witches, and they've cast a spell on us.

Jak and Daxter: Naughty Dog  are capable of doing things with Sony hardware that would make you swear the team thinks in binary. Rumors abound of an MMO set in the Jak universe, the idea of a Massively Multiplayer Online Adventure Platformer has me bouncing off the walls.Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo: It has to be emphasised that you haven't seen a single frame of GT5. What was shown at E3 was GT4 running in 1080p. PGR what?

God of War: It's coming, it has to be... and it will make you its manslave. Can you even fathom how amazing it'll be fighting a giant kracken in high resolution, blood spurting and scales glistening as twin blades cut arcs of death through the frigid air? Can you?

Silent Hill: Think back to the first time Silent Hill mentally scarred you. God Of War

Final Fantasy: You will be ownt.

Kingdom Hearts: Considering how good these games looked on the PS2 hardware,

Shadow of the Colossus: You didn't play Shadow, you experienced it

Metal Gear Solid: Kojima's MGS games have always resonated with emotional and philosophical depth, the technical and visual artistry on display knows no peer. Plus they' re damn cool.

Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, but real this time. Let's see it Konami.

SOCOM: With the power of the PS3 behind them, Zipper will finally be able to deliver a SOCOM experience that runs smoothly,Shadow of the Colossus looks great and delivers depth of gameplay we all know and love.

Wipeout: I'd be surprised if we didn't hear something about a Wipeout game coming to PS3 very soon and considering how much fun Wipeout pure was, a next gen Wipeout is a civic responsibility.

Lair: Have you seen this game!? No one knows exactly what it's about, but holy aunt Jemima does it looks tasty!

Soul Reaver: Probably the most intricate and detailed story ever written for a videogame, the Soul Reaver series needs a PS3 entry. There's no evidence of a new game in the works but it would kick much buttock to wander the landscape of Nosgoth powered by the PS3...oh, oh, Nosgoth Online!
Soul Reaver
Killzone: Conspicuously absent at E3, rumor has it Sony didn't want to take the focus off Resistance: Fall of Man. When next we see Killzone, it'll be big, very big

Bottom line is that E3 was only the tip of the PlayStation iceberg and it focused mainly on launch window titles and new IP's, Sony's saving the big guns, and it won't be long before we start seeing and hearing more from them.

 » Stop the negativity, finally

Thank god for this article
People understand that you will pay more if you get more stuff, in this case - BluRay, 60GB, WiFi out of the box etc...

XBOX 360 fanboys keep saying crap like the PS3 will be a total flop and the XBOX will take over the world. Fact is that people who are going to buy the PS3 will know what theyre getting and I would consider it a good purchase on a value-for-money basis

im really happy that ps3 is going to have free online ( i really dont care if there are advertisments when you go online) , but what really got me excited was the wi-fi. Since i dont have a connection to the internet in my room i can just connect to the free online wi-fi service in my area! woot!

People love Sony, ms is hated all over the world because of their os and arrogance. Wait and you will see who the King is ;)

Basicly, you are clearly a sony fan boy.

I brought an xbox360 because I think its the right consol this time, I thught the playstation 1 was AMAZING but the ps2 was mediocre. The games sony have for playstation may be good but do you want to play the same things over and over, a good thing about sony is the japanese developers but then iv been playing my 360 for half a year longer than youv been playing your ps3 for basicly half the price... and oh its not even out. I DO NOT think that the "specs" of the ps3 mean much, its just the developers have spent more time on the games which does give them an advantage. Most of 360s games are EA games at the moment thats why the graphics are not very good, also developers have not used more than one of the cores for the games, theres another 2 there for use.. Even if the ps3 had batter graphics, so what its not about graphics... ITS ABOUT THE NINTENO WII

 » Just go here...

I myself am i loyal customer of Sony. i think that many people r forgetting the loyaltiy that sony has installed into there customer. Almost all the ppl that bought ps1, bought a ps2, that bought a psp and will, or wantto buy a ps3. i myself will ofcourse will buy a ps3, and u know why? it because sony has never let any of its customers down before. Nintendo is trying to make up for past sins by make a gaming console that is user friendly. it is very innovative and natural feeling. if it offered more games that are my cup of tea, such as blood, gore, and tities&booty, i would buy them too. Microsoft has had a couple of dissipointments such as the transformers (but noone knew not to but them on carpet) and not all games are backwards compatible. Also the graphics look just like shiny updates of the ps2/xbox game graphics.
Microsoft kinda reminds me of Sega of in the 64, ps2, dreamcast war. Dreamcast seemed to be the best. it had great internet connection, cheaper than the ps2, and had great graphics(but 360 doesnt have better graphics than the ps3). it seemed to be the obvious winner, but it failed. im not sayin that 360 will fail as bad the Dreamcast, but it seems to be taking the same road as sega did.

and to u #11:Total number of units sold by the Xbox 360 top 10: 1,031,829.
that's not good for a year, ps2 sold that in a month...

 » More Expensive Than a 360???

I'm from the UK and bought a 360 Core earlier this year for £210. Since then I have bought a Hard Drive (£65) and the 'official' 360 wireless adapter (also £65), the core also didn't come with any HD cables so I had to buy a VGA adapter also (£15). This comes to a grand total of £355! Everything in that package comes with the 60GB PS3 model (apart from the VGA cable which has been replaced with a superior HDMI). The Hard Drive is MUCH bigger, and the wireless network is included.

The UK PS3 (60GB) in the UK is going to cost £425 - now that's still £70 more I hear you say. Not if you factor in the Blu Ray player - Microsoft have announced a HD-DVD add-on for the 360 but if that costs less than £70 I'll eat my own ass!

The 360 only seems cheaper at it's bare bones - you need to buy extra to make it even come close to the PS3, and then it's suddenly not so cheap after all!

I WIN!!!!!

Why are you saying non of the games looked like xbox360 quality? He did actually play them, while you watched on your computer. Its not the same you know? By the way ur right # 11. When it launched in Japan, it seemed like all its people where lining outside waiting for the shops open. When I went to get my PS2 when it launched, all the stores I checked had all of their PS2, sold out within 30 minutes! What does that tell you?

Sony is going on the line w/ the PS3. There are making a huge gamble right now. With Sony's description the PS3 should rock but, things don't always go as planed. I have a PS2 now ,but I dont' know if I will get a PS3 or 360 both are decent consoles, but I will go up to the wire on this one seeing if sony can pull of the PS3 , which I hope they will.

» whats up with the bias

seriously, u guys need to chill on the whole fanboy thing. i dont know why is it that people choose to be allied to a particular system. the bottom line is that the sony ps3 is going to perform slightly better than a 360 when it comes to graphics. ill get it one once the technology is proven. dishing out close to a thousand on a system is just something the average person cant afford. Apparently the guy who wrote the article mentions fanboys, when it seems that he's a little on sony's sac. dude, u kinda failed to mention mass effect, lost planet, and BIOSHOCK on the 360 side of things. i dont see warhawk or heavenly sword being as being game of the year contenders the way i see gears of war and bioshock. every system is gonna have exclusivity to certain titles. pushing a system at 600 will obviously push some developers to pursue their options with respect to other consoles. will the ps3 rock? only time will tell. u just dont have to be such a fanboy about it, stop living in denial. haha. ill get mines once god of war 3 (hopefully by then we'll be looking at a 400 dollar system) is released for it. for now ill be happy with my 360 and the upcoming hype which is gears of war and halo 3.

» It's all about the games.

At E3 this year I got to play Crackdown, Prey, Shadow Run, Too Human, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Rockstar's table Tennis, Saint's Row and Lost Planet, the only title that I'd buy if I actually had the system was Gears of War (based on the demonstration I saw).

For the PS3 I got to play Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword and Warhawk, I would buy all of those if I had a PS3 because each one provides something you absolutely cannot get out of current gen hardware, the same cannot be said for the 360 games I played.

If it seems the article's one sided that's because it is, it's titled "Why the PS3 Will Rock". I feel the Wii will be a GREAT console, and the 360 will provide more hits than the original Xbox, but the PS3 is poised to offer SO much more.

 » HAHA...

I'm sorry, but the 360 fanboys have no idea...

First things first... The Playstation has better Franchises than any other console... Let's see the ones worth mentioning.

Wii:
Mario
Mario Kart
Zelda
Metroid

360:
Halo 3
Gears of War.. - is that even a franchise?
Fable
PGR
Forza
Too Human
... and a couple more worthy titles...

PS3:
GT
Tekken
MGS
God Of War
Final Fantasy
Assassin's Creed
Heavenly Sword
Eighth Day
Jak and Daxter
Killzone
Warhawk
and a whole lot more...

Look, i know that the listed games are not the only 'exclusive' franchises for each system.. but no doubt they make the console.. and really any fool can see that Sony is king of the Franchise...

Everyone can laugh at sony and it's price for the PS3... but come november- Sony will have the last laugh.

Sorry Microsoft fanboys but it's true, and even you know it, right now you're going through the same denial Sony fanboys went through when the original Xbox specs were announced. and I mean BIG DENIAL!!!!l
and I don`t feel sorry for any Microsoft fanboys at all. because they are total loserand why, it is because they will need to buy a new xbox720 in 3 more year later and why. I will give you a good a sample look at your old and dead xbox it only live 4 and 1/2 year only but the ps2 still alive and have 6 year. that mean the same for the xbox360 it will died soon to make the next new system. when nintendo or M$ make a new system they kill the old one. but sony they keep supporting their old system after putting out a new one for another 2 or 3 more year. a good example ps1 it live for almost 10 years and ps2 will still alive after ps3 launch.

 » waiting for teh 360hddvd under £70

LOL #17!!!! That'd be halarious to see! LMAO, ahh bah your right! People are flipping out about the price when if you were to get the same amount of stuff in teh 360 it would be close to the same price.

Also, Great article! It really shows that Sony's got some huge game franchises and those are more then enuff (IMO) to warrent the PS3 price tag.

To #15, umm you say that developers aren't use to the 360's architecture and the multiple processor config? Well I've been hearing from a ton of Devs who say the 360 is considerable easier then the PS3 to develop for, they're having a much harder time getting their heads around the Cell processor then they are the setup in the 360. Even though they're having a harder time with the PS3's processor and it's architecture developers seem to make amazing looking games on teh system, and they're not even finished products yet!!! there's still time to polish.

 » HD begins.....

I have never owned a PS1 or PS2 but im certainly getting PLAYSTATION 3....... I dont know abt the rest but Playstation 3 is the new dawn of High Definition entertainment unit...i like many more millions are not only gonna buy a PS3 for its gaming superiority but its Blu-ray, SACD, DVD....(and i bet many didnt know it would play SACD)...its HDMI output....its an whole entertainment pack in one unlike the 360 which is a little retard in HD and 2 boxes? to even begin at the lower end of HD.?? not a smart move!!!...think of all that noise generated by the fans of the both HD-dvd and main unit??? midnight gaming is going to be really a strain for the ears...well i can start comparing now but i think every "adult" knows what they want. This system is exactly what sony targeted for...home enteraintment for everyone!! Its got a 30yr old waiting eagerly for the launch, and altought im not a serious gamer but game line-ups is looking very attractive compared to any other console. Kudos to Sony for finally bringing a system which the whole family could enjoy!! One more sold for PS3!

 » Is it for everybody?

I keep reading over and over again that although the PS3 is $600, your getting a lot of bang for your buck. While I can't argue with that, maybe you should sit back and think. Although it's hefty on the features, do you really think people can spend $600 on a console. Im not saying thats much but its a lot more than what people are used to. Think of a car: you've got more expensive cars becuase they look better and have many more features. Does that make people buy them more than the others? No..Sony's really gearing there system towards the hardcore gamer and leaving out the average ones. For someone who just wants to play a game with a good story, will $600 justify their purchase. There putting too many features into it that will be nice but not necessary to enjoy a good game. Most people already have a computer that can do many of the things the PS3 will be able to do except playing the games and blue ray. The PS3 will be cool but I think Sony is taking the wrong approach.
