Got Qemu built, installed, and running in YDL and installed Windows 2000 Pro into a virtual machine then installed Wizardry Gold in Windows 2000 Pro. Complete with Soundblaster 16 sound. Used the Gimp in YDL to grab the screens. At any rate another milestone for the PS3! |

Nice, very nice indeed.
if you have linux, then you can use QEMU.
which in turns run windows (old versions).
there also other linux softs that emulate x86 OS like xp but its too slow for usability. lets just w8, i know they will optimize it. if program hobbyist pushes it, in the future, the ps3 maybe able to run windows/directx softwares.
It really shows that someone really wants M$ Windows that badly that they have taken all that time to achieve it,Jesus if you want windows its there in front of 99.99% of you its called the PC
Looks great but i wish there was a video of it in action. I just want to know how fast it is.
I agree, it might be slow because it seems emulated but we'll soon see. I really hope it's not that slow compared to how normally Operating Systems get emulated...
just look at the taskmanager in windows...
24% CPU usage only for running windows... this is like running win2k on a P90 with 64MB ram
Microsoft on Sony PS3
yep +)
That's why he is running DOS games :P Still, you might be able to get tie fighter or x-wing running on it, as long as windows recognizes the controller as a gamepad.
Really this is no surprise, people have been doing this on linux for ages and PS3 is just a low end PC running linux, so it makes sense for it to work....actually i'm surprised it took this long :P
100% AGREE and I would add the PS3 seems to be selling more to film buffs than game players.
i like the sound of the N64 emu. i wonder if thay can get other emus also, like and Xbox emu?
You can't get access to the RSX graphic chip for it's impossible to run 3D rendered games. It also has limited memory, but the RSX access is the main thing holding everything back.

aint that the worst windows out there? or is it win me?
its win me... win 2000 is near the same as xp but it eat less memory
I still use it, and only now after the is its obsolescence becoming a problem. I still probably won't upgrade to XP for a year
its me not 2k pro
I just booted up Win2k on VMware on my PC and saw that the CPU was sitting around 1 to 2%. In the image it's sitting on 24% with nothing open. Not really practical but I guess it's good it can be done.
another reason why the PS3 is better than the Xbox 360
If M$ wanted windows in the 360 windows would now be running in the 360 simple as that. You say running windows makes the PS3 better ?all it does is sends out the message that the PS3 is just a pc in a different box.
can't the 360 run xp?
ps3 shouldn't have gone for dedicated vid ram if sony wont even let us utilize the gpu.
the x360 or ps3 use power pc based cpu and windows cant run natively on it that all you need a big emu and its slow
there was a post on here that came out shortly after the ps3 did of a guy running xp on his ps3 Fedora with qemu the same way this guy did.
Wow so it proves that the PS3 can run the same system as the Dreamcast did and that went down well to didnt it.
the dreamcast wasnt runing windows it was runing windows ce...
windows ce is just an interface like the xmb of the ps3 or the xbox menu...
it cant run exe progs and other things who windows does
i have think of something
it would better to make a x86 interpreter for the ps3
you install on otherOS before win2k with a pack of custom driver
someone has already done it on psp for dos, linux and win95
it wil be faster than otherOS+linux+Qemu+win2k
someone has already make a homebrew game you install directly in otherOS
i think its a good idea ;)
As tailslol said, they need an x86 interpreter. PowerPC is the main thing besides the no access to graphic chip that sucks. You have to do all this emulating which really slows it down. The 24% cpu usage prooves it. If there were some way for there to be a real time interpreter that would convert the x86 to be usable by the powerPC, it would probably really help a lot. Then you wouldn't be limited about the software you can run since most stuff is made for x86. But I'm just baseing off of what I read, so since I haven't really experianced any of it, most of what I said could be wrong.
why not vmware?? it runs a lot better than qemu and anyone that has used linux would know that windows can be virtuallised at 80%-90% native speeds depending on the amount of ram in the host machine.
Basically the PS3 is awesome more games are also on the way!
