YDL logo -shows up after the log-in window

Ever since it was confirmed that PS3 will be supporting Linux, the homebrew community rejoiced at the possibility of running 'brew on Sony's next-gen console. So when PS3 was launched and the Linux Addon CD (plus the OtherOS installer) was released as well, everybody knew that we are but steps away from having Linux (and all that Linux represents, of course) on the PS3. And soon enough, we were able to provide PS3 users with full installation instructions for Fedora Core 5 (but take note that any PPC Linux distro can be installed) on the PS3.

What everybody's been waiting for though is Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 - and we've got stuff for you here!

Yep, the latest version of Terra Soft's YDL has been confirmed for the PS3 and everybody's been on the lookout for its release. We already got details on what it's going to offer and how it's going to be installed. Now we're pretty sure not every PS3 user was lucky enough to have downloaded the distro (from YDL.net) last November 26, but we have here the next best thing - pictures!

Japanese site FIXSTARS has posted images of YDL v5.0 booted on a PS3. While it doesn't show much - just the welcome sign, terms of agreement, settings, and login windows - at least we can now all see what the hype is all about. Don't be shy, click on the thumbnails to get a better view... you just might find yourself wishing it was already December 11 (when you can finally purchase the distro's DVD in stores) or the week of Christmas (when Install and Source ISOs can actually be downloaded via public mirrors)!

I really want to mess around with this OS stuff on my PS3... but Resistance is well, hard to resist (also picking out a 160GB HDD for my PS3 before I install too much).

There's a new interface that comes with the YDL 5.0. It's a simple task bar that floats on the top.. Not sure if it's really "new" but its called Enlightenment.. I haven't been able to get the audio working.. For some reason there's no sound coming out, I've tried both HDMI and Component and no sound. Also, there's no WIFI support.. only cabled connection. Having a hard time updating Firefox 1.5 to 2.0, tried going into the Gnome style to add/remove apps.. But then again, I'm still new to Linux so I don't know much to begin with.. As far as comparing it to Fedora Core 5, right off the bat it was a lot easier.. No more linux command line entries.. Straight booted off cd once you install the proper boot loader. The design itself is a lot nicer than FC5, but I don't really know what the hype about being "made" for the PS3 was all about.. I see nothing special. Maybe I'm just missing the big picture.. Oh wells, it works great as a portable linux box.

» somebody know what's the point here?

Is YDL run faster that FCL on the ps3 or it'S the same?
because if it's the same and if what digitalkid said is true, I don't see why we should install this!!

anyway, I'm going to buy my ps3 in january ( around the 6th ) so I suppose all those questions will be answered.

I also hope that, by then, we'll even have some homebrew :D and programs, like a BD-ripper for linux lol, and maybe new emulators? a ps2 emulator would be cool, a gc-emulator would be really hot, and an xbox emulator would be fun as well ( didn't have the chance to play fable ). more ? yeah, like a PSP emulator and a ds emulator ( would be sooooooo coooool!!! ). And it's not like the ps3 can't handle it, I mean, maybe it's too hard for PCs, but the ps3 have the hardware to run ps2 games... :D
( and arrange the psx emulator for linux :D, that would be soo cool :D )

ps: just hoping mistwalker will do multi-console ( port their games on the ps3 :D ), that would be NICE ( no, more, words alone cannot describe ) lol. because FF are cool, but new franchise is always good too ( always good from sakaguchi :D )

buddy.. I think u better go back to sleep cause you're dreaming.. The most you'll find for this is probably NES, SNES, N64 and MAME emulators. TurboGFX, Genesis, Atari and whatever else they've already accomplished.

Highly unlikely they'll release anything else, "because" it's a PS3 running linux. There is no graphic support for the Linux on PS3 which means they'll never get the awesome graphics on the Linux side, and the limitations of the ram in the ps3.

BluRay ripping would be an option, but then again.. Who's going rip and burn blurays at 25-30bux a pop? When u can buy a movie at that price.. Games.. well.. We'll just see about that..

And if you're asking if it runs any FASTER? In what aspect did u mean? They both surf they internet at the same speed, the both launch their applications at pretty much the same speed. Install wise, it's a little more interesting than FC5, but basically they're both linux.. Unless YDL5 and it's team can show us something unbeliveable.. They're pretty much the same.

» better than other linux distributions

the yellow dog linux has been specifically re-designed to run on a ps3, so expect this distribution to run very well... I hope they've just worked out how to use the cell properly!

"There is no graphic support for the Linux on PS3 which means they'll never get the awesome graphics on the Linux side" ... I could be wrong and sorry if I am, But i do belive your wrong. Yellow Dog was made to run on the ps3 .. and therefore it should have the correct graphic support/drivers and all that fun stuff. Also there is a chance of getting OS X to run on the ps3 because Yellow Dog linux has a program called MOL. MOL is for making virtual machins running such as red hat, OS X and other linux based systems. Here is a Qoute from Teera Softs wed site: "MOL (Mac-On-Linux): MOL does not function with Apple G5 computers nor with any computer that uses NVidia graphics cards. The former is an issue of emulation and requires a rebuild of MOL, the later an issue of graphics card support. We are working to resolve these as quickly as is possible ... " So it might beable to be done right now but it should beable to be done within 6months or so ;-)

Nope. The PS3's hypervisor controls what can be done in an alternate OS. The hypervisor forbids any access to the RSX and only allows 2-D framebuffer stuff. But in a few years, there will be well-priced PC's that have the power and strength to run gamecube emulators and PC's allow any homebrew whatsoever, including Linux. The PS3 has great graphics but Sony does not really give a s*** about homebrew or customers.

I installed everything but when it asks for user and password I type them in and then the screen goes blank. Wha? Now what. I'm guessing that my tv sucks and can't handle the res but I don't know how to switch it to a lower res. Any help would be great. Thanks
