APPLE -PS3

UPDATE - 3: Checking the Official US PlayStation 3 website now paints a picture that reinforces the thought that this was all just a slip-up. The site no longer flashes the Apple logo, and the smoke that accompanied the image in the background is now gone. According to Joystiq we can expect an official statement from Sony on the matter later today. It'll be interesting to see what's said on the matter.

UPDATE - 2: Just like that the mystery's been solved. It was fun while it lasted, but in the end credit goes to "Flynnz", who supplied a video that shows just what's going on behind the scenes. Bad Sony, getting us all excited over nothing!

UPDATE - 1: The guys over at Joystiq managed to get a hold of Sony's PR people, who were apparently just as surprised at the appearance of the logo as the rest of us (quoted to have said in reply to the image "that's f---king funny.") A poster on ps3forums, "Aleman360" decomplied the flash site and thinks the logo's appearance might have been caused by this little fella. Personally, we're not so sure, the shape of the logo's seems slightly different, and why would it fade in and fade out for just a second? Joystiq theorises that Sony may have used a trial version of Apple's "Shake" and forgot to remove the watermark... say it ain't so Sony!

Original Story:

If you're a smart card player, you don't lay all your cards out on the table for all to see, and if you're a smart general you win the war by having just that little extra bit of oomph left in reserve, an ace in the hole, a great huge surprise no one else knows about. For the longest time we've been hearing rumors that Apple and Nintendo might be getting in bed together, it made sense since Nintendo has on more than one occasion expressed admiration for the great grey fruit, and with each passing day Nintendo seems to be morphing into a Japanese version of Apple. It made sense because Microsoft would never get into bed with Apple, never. All this made so much sense that most overlooked the possibility of an Apple and Sony co-operative venture. Well, if the image below and the official US PlayStation site are to be believed, now's a time to start contemplating this possibility.

We received a tip this morning pointing us in the direction of the Official US PlayStation site, that claimed the famous Apple logo flashed over the image of the PS3 for just a second as the site booted up. Naturally we were more than a little sceptical, we visited the site, and sure enough, there it was... the Apple logo.

But what does this mean? At this point no one knows, it could be that Apple and Sony are working on iTunes integration of some sort, it could be a bit broader than that and mean that both companies are working on high definition digital content delivery. Or it could be even bigger than that. We know from statements by Ken Kutaragi that the PS3 will ship with some form of the Linux Operating System, and we understand from a recent Gamespot interview that the PS3 is also capable of running Mac OS X... could that be it? If the PS3 shipped equipped with Mac OS X it would go a long way to justifying that $600 price tag, no longer would you just be getting a PS3, you'd be getting the functionality of a Mac as well, probably with all the productivity perks the OS provides (bye, bye, tax tariffs).

Right now the only thing we can do is speculate, it might be something as simple as Apple codec support in the PS3 (but  would that justify including the logo on the machines official homepage?) or it might be the sign of something much bigger. It's hard not to get excited at the possibilities, what could this mean for iPod and PSP connectivity? Does this tie in somehow with Sony's Xbox Live counter? Could this be a clue as to why Sony's complete revamp of Connect has yet to go online? Right now we're in that wonderful land called limbo where we have no official word either way, and just about anything seems a possibility. Let's do what we as fans all do best, let's speculate!

QJ has since contacted SCEA for official clarification, but at the time of publication we were yet to receive a official response. You can bet we'll keep you updated as soon as we have more information.

Many thanks to "Nerd" and "MJUHMJMUH" for sending this in.

At first I missed it, then I refreshed and saw it, then I refreshed again cause I couldn't believe it haha. Its weird, but very cool weird. I personal dont really care for mac os's BUT if the PS3 were to integrate it into the system that would be awesome. Because having any kind of high product os in the system just gives it that much more edge. Of course, like the article said it could end up being anything Apple related, from the smaller things to the much broader things, but to put the logo onto the official site is giving me chills.

Also, Apple is playing it's cards very well by teaming up with the PS3. And like the article said, this may help, even just a bit, justify a part of that $600 dollar price tag by confirming that the PS3 is somewhat a computer.

Wow! I honestly thought it was a load of crap, but going to the site and seeing it for my self, I still can't believe it. I sure hope something is definatly happening with the two companies...Wow, I'm in a bit of shock of the endless possibilities.

» great news... really... *****ING GREAT NEWS!!!

apple is great...
sony is great...
apple + sony ?... *****ING AWESOME

altough it might be something small, i don't think they would bring it on the official site, as for that reason there should be more logo's flashing up ps3's surface.
All we can do is speculate, and speculate I will...

Jump this post up because everyone has to see this!

As for now I'm crossing my fingers, hoping it will be something big. If it is, Sony would have a GREAT advantage in the console war.

For those that missed it you can just right click the image and keep clicking BACK until it shows but here it is anyway.

It's simply an error.

 » Its an error,

Looks like whichever agency made the vid they messed up. They took this flash vid

http://web.mac.com/mouseh/streamvideo14.swf

And overlaid the PS3 but didnt do a good enough job of the edit hence the 3 frames of apple goodness.

" Microsoft would never get into bed with Apple, never."

Doesn't Microsoft own a significant percent of Apple stock?
Doesn't Microsoft make their Office software available for Mac OS?
Doesn't Microsoft make a version or emulation of Windows available for use on Mac computers?

I have to very much doubt a deal with Sony and Apple. There must be some other explanation for the symbol flashing on the PS3 site. Maybe it was just the software used to create the site, maybe it was Quiktime loading, etc. I suppose there is less to this than one might hope.

The explanation is above, its an editing error.

 » ???

Maybe an error...or it May Not.
If it was an error, I think Sony would have herd about it by now and fixed the website (trademark infringement anyone??)
but the Apple logo it is still appearing.
Let wait and see
All I have to say, if the PS3 does run some form of OS X....OHHHH BOY....

 » Ahh ok

Well, it seems they're correct, it was an error. O well, I'm not a fan boy or anything so I'm not crying over spilled milk. However, the possibility of a high end OS in the PS3 or any other console for that matter sure was mouth watering. Maybe Sony might get an idea out of this blunder.

I can't imagine there is any way that Apple would be going back to PowerPC, let alone a complicated derivative such as the Cell, after all the work they did to migrate to Intel.

Also, not likely that Apple is going to license their OS to run on someone else's hardware. Been there, done that and they killed that program long ago.

sony steals yet another thing. you think being a computing empire of sorts, sony could make their own smoke effects and not steal somethign from apple.

I liked it with the smoke. O well, kinda makes me wish Sony was using at least some apple software on PS3 (non-gaming related of course). I mean, I'd love to have iTunes to organize the music on my PS3.

 » Ok.....

Here we go.... For those who don't know...

UNIX started this whole thing... Why?
Linux is based off Unix
MAC is based off Unix

Mac/Linux/Unix are basicly the same bloody thing. Putting Linux on the PS3 and the 360 have put them in line for someone to put in Linux, or OS X, onto either of them. A 360 running OS X... that would be funny.

Apple has always had a more secure system, due to the CPU/OS interaction to help prevent viruses, and such. Glad to see if Apple is helping Sony in building the OS.

And yes, MS has built Office for Mac's, and also does some of their warehousing and such. They are not complete enemy's, Steve and Billy Borg are still friends, sort of.

In an official statement Sony said:
In a recent update to the PLAYSTATION 3 section of www.us.playstation.com website, an external error was made during the upload process and the Apple icon was mistakenly placed on the site. We immediately fixed the problem and apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Aright, this is getting stupid now. This guy says he sees morse code. calm down it isn't a conspiracy or anything, good thing no one came up with the idea that it was some hidden message of where to find the holy grail.
