40GB PS3 - Image 1The issue of backwards compatibility on the Sony PlayStation 3 has calmed down a bit over the past few months, but just when you thought we've all let go of that, some buzz from Germany brings it back to life.

Near as we can figure from the rough translation of the report from German sire Ingame, they were able to talk to a Sony supplier about the matter. The supplier apparently tipped them off that 40GB PS3s will be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games courtesy of a firmware update this October.

According to Ingame, the supplier even joked that he has to get rid of his 60GB PS3 stock before 40GB PS3s get BC. It appears that the older version of the console is in hot demand over in Europe because of their added functionality.

Take this one with a grain of salt, people. There's really no way of debunking or confirming it at the moment. We'll give you more updates soon.

Thanks to CKhaleel for the tip!

 » i doubt it

maybe select games. as in very very select games, like the ps1 downloads for psp.

Unless they've made a software PS2 emulator (which... they could, I guess), it ain't happenin'. It's missing the PS2 hardware.

 » ...

they have already done that FreePlay, the 60gb models in NZ have the EE chip, but the 20gb/80gb's don't.. they do software emulation instead. they currently support less titles because its an emulation - but more updates are improving this.

they're supporting BC with firmwire updated anymore.

Do they still sell the 20GB PS3 in NZ?
Did they just rip you guys off another 20GB, and give you a 20GB is similar to our 40GB?

I'm not sure about NZ, but I know the NTSC 20GB PS3 had an EE in it, and is fully BC.
Europe still has the 60GB (PAL), but it uses software emulation similar to our 80GB (NTSC). There is both a PAL and NTSC version of the 40GB, and they are both lacking BC (at the moment).

I have a fully BC 60GB, but i hope this update is true. I never liked the idea of Sony limiting the software BC, just because of money.

 » There is a difference...

The 40GB version lacks even the Graphics Synthesizer that the 80GB and Europe 60GB has, so software emulation would be much harder to implement on the 40GB. What the 80GB and the Euro 60GB lacks is the Emotion Engine CPU from the PS2, but they have the Graphics Synthesizer to help with the software emulation. 40GB has neither, so it has to use a full software emulation approach, and I doubt it is an easy task. Look at how PCs today emulate the PS2 games, it's nice but still not perfect.

 » This is Sony...

Well, ever wonder why the non-official PlayStation 2 emulators doesn't work perfectly? because it wasn't Sony.

Sony knows all aspects of their products. Like many people say. If Sony decided to throw it in, they can do it -They have all the SDK's, devs, and tools needed to make it. It's just a matter of company red-tapes like always.

It's same with Microsoft, wonder why not all games are supported by the Xbox360's BC? Because of those damn red-tapes.

god your dumb, how u think sony tests games they use an emulator to make sure new games work on old hardware and vise versa, they have a ps2 emulator that works perfect, they just not releasing it. and look at xbox360, that can emulate no only xbox games, but it has to emulate the nvidea graphics card. you think that isnt harder, man ps2 emualtor is almost perfect, i can run kingdom hearts and FFX 60+ fps small sound bugs on my laptop which only has intergrated graphics

Why the hell voted you Geosondaman down? He is *****ing right. He never said it isn't possibl, he just it is harder.
And xLinkinwormx: You're the noob here. geo was completely right with the hardware aspects. You have no idea of emulating a system, I bet you just a spoiled brat, and your parents paid your laptop. Sure, they have an emulator that runs perfectly, but that doesn't mean they can simply port it to the PS3. If you have no knwoledge, SHUT THE ***** UP.

 » I'm with Silver

Emultation isn't some simple task of running code on another system. It's an intricate process.

Game systems rely heavily on the hardware performing many tasks since they're comparatively limited by hardware (lack of ram, etc). Games require a perfect configuration and when you change the hardware design, regardless of better hardware or not, you mess with that configuration and throw emulation off. It's not so simple.

Even the best PC-PS2 emulators don't run all OS2 games perfectly or near perfectly on the fastest PC hardware.

» thanks for the info Geosondaman

it makes sense now why they completely dropped the BC. Graphics synethizer must be what helped reduce costs as well as card readers etc

 » typo, and my thoughts.

I guess I'm the typo-spotting man. In the 2nd paragraph, it should be "40GB" instead of "40FGB". XD, sorry, I had to do it.

It's very possible that this is true. The current 40 and 80gb models don't have any of the chips that make the BC possible, yet both can play PS1 games just fine and the 80gb runs most PS2 games fine. If they can implement it in those units, I don't see why a Firmware Update couldn't add such a thing.

It's possible that the code itself is already in present firmwares but just not utilized on the 40, but I doubt that possibility.

 » awsome

Now thats awsome I'm glad I am getting my ps3 this fall or holiday season when sales are going on :D Since I am getting my 24inch NEC widescreen with the componets that i need for consoles etc and getting my new desk in September :D

 » OhK....

1) Its just a rumor.
2)I doubt there will be a sale.
3)We dont care!

______
Anyway i realy dont care about the BC although it would be nice im not going to hang myself if it doesnt come out on the 40gb models.

 » so....

anyone ever stop to think that it serves to sonys benefit to implement a full software emulator because it.....decreases the production cost, which is a big goal for sony.

The reason ps2 emulation sucks for the pc, is because the developers are having to reverse engineer everything. Sony does not have to do that, just like another guy on here mentioned that they have access to all the SDK's, all the resources and documentation, and even if they didn't, they could just ask some of the guys that helped design it. I mean, i think that sony would have the best idea of what it takes to emulate their previous system on their latest system.

but then again, maybe i'm just a 40gb owner/wishful thinker

 » Want PS2 emulation?

either buy yourself a 80GB PS3 or get a PS2 :)

   by nihouma - 2008-06-18
» I'd doubt it is because they don't want it

I don't think Sony is going to keep this from its customers unless there is a reason it won't work on the 40GB version. I agree with Geos tht the 40GB is lacking vital parts to greatly aid in emulation. Try emulating the SNES on an N64....they are predecessor and successor, but vastly different in how they work.
