sonyIn the midst of a share price plunge, Sony keeps its fighting stance and remains to have a positive outlook for the PS3. The company expects to sell 100 million units of the next-gen console, despite the steep price point. Sony also predicts that heavy start-up costs related to the PS3 launch will impact operating margins by 1.2%.

Both the Playstation and Playstation 2 consoles have reached the 100 million mark and it wouldn't be a surprise if the PS3 follows suit. Of course, it's no easy feat, but over time, when the price drops a little bit, then Sony can probably pull it off.

 » It's Simple

This will be a simple feat for Sony! They have done it twice with the PS1 and PS2, which were thought to be too expensive. Sony's popularity with past playstations will sell the PS3. The units will be sold out at launch. Especially as the price drops. PS3's will be sold.

 » of course

They can.
And I will buy 100 millions PS3

I'm not saying they can't, but it is important to note that now that Xbox is no longer a new comer to the console war. Also, Nintendo seems to be a rapidly growing threat to both Microsoft and Sony. Sony has severe competition this time around.

» of course!!! just do the math!!!

1 million people x 100 broken consoles each = 100 million consoles sold!!!

but honestly, I have given up on Sony products. My 1st wave PS2 broke after less than a year and I am glad I never bought a new one. I would really love to see Sony fall

population of Japan: 127,417,244. Therefore, at least 127,417,244 PS3 consoles will sell.

 » this is possible

once the PS3 hits the end of it's lifecycle and costs like $100, and the games are $10 each...
maybe...
if they have good games...
Blu-ray is not helping...

   by iceatcs - 2006-06-24
» yeah it is easy for sony

They have done on PS and PS2.

No matters the price, you thinko CSFFlame.
PS2 managed over 100million with the top games are still selling $40+

 » i won't be one of them

I don't mind how powerful the PS3 it is.

i'm really disappointed with the whole sony against homebrew issue, and i'm definitely not buying any Sony ever again.

there's x360 and wii, and with the advances in tech, PCs are so powerful now, that i pass on the ps3

back on the days of the PS2, PCs were cr**p on gaming, but now the situation is different

now the only way I see buying a ps3 worth it is, if it costed 300 quid or so. paying so much for a console it's not worth it.

games are far too expensive, and if you want to watch movies or mp3, just buy a player for 30 quid, so what's the point of buying it if you already have a powerful PC at home?

of course, they say that it is more than a console...more like what? do you mean, it will be allowed to use it as a regular PC and make your own software (aka homebrew)? otherwise, I can't see how the ps3 is any different to the ps2, just more powerful

anyway, no more money for $ony

Certainly, but the PS2 was $300 and then dropped off, not $600

Sony will be supporting homebrew this time around and you will be able to use emulators on your PS3.

 » word to the wise

lets not ruin it for ourselves people, make games and apps for you to use and cherish, dont rip up to (oneday) 50gig iso's to save your self a few tens. if we play our cards right and sony uses a good open development policy, possibly one stating that any home made programs are not the responsibilty of sony and stats any illegal actions made by such programs will result in full criminal punishment or something. leave the iso's be, work for your play, old systems that you cant find the console let alone the games, i can understand (ive tried their a ***** to find, anyone have a nomad?) but psp, xb/360, ps1-3, and ds roms/iso, thats just lazy, make your own games if you dont want to play.

 » No Suprises...

No suprises there.

If any company can sell 100 million consoles... it's Sony.

They've done it before, and it's only expected they'll do it again.

Well i already pre-ordered 2. So now they are 99,999,998 consoles away :P

 » come on ffaldkja!

Someone will find away to support ISO loaders/piracy thats just what happens. Its happened on pretty much every console (PS1,PS2,Gamecube, Xbox, 360, PSP).

How Sony handle it is another matter. Im as pist off as you about the PSP homebrew scene but is PS3 homebrew going to be as big?

IF I buy a PS3 its going to be for its power. If the PS3 can do alot of features that make its price tag worthy then people will get over the shock and PS3 will sell.

But for me I have a Xbox360 and im not impressed with Sony right now so im watching the whole sketch.

 » the right price

ps3 is like a computer? well in that case i'll buy a real computer and keep playing my 399.99$ xbox 360. sony is just a console like the 360 with an over-rated blue- ray disc. dont fall for the ps lies. 599.99? are u crazy? who is gonna pay for my gas? sony?

 » well

ok if u dont want to pay 500 or 600 dollars, you prolly dont have a good tv to play the ps3 OR 360 games anyways. 400 dollars is still alot. and an extra 100 or 200 for blu-ray wont really hurt.

oh and DOES ANYONE KNOW WERE I CAN PRE-ORDER THE PS3

   by Vietone - 2006-06-25
» Ps3 is cheap for what you get. Xbox360 is exspensive

The PS3 is a whole multimedia entertainment system just like Sony said it would be. The Xbox360 is a game console jyst like microsoft said it would be.

Blu-ray is a great feature. Not only do we get a cheap blu-ray player since the PS3 can handle most of the functions itself, but we get everything you could possible want from the living room couch.

Both systems will have music, movies, pictures, downloadable content, streaming and games.

But the PS3 has many features the Xbox360 doesnt have:

Internet browser
Native Keyboard and Mouse support.
Playing any media from hard drive.
High Definition Blu-ray
HDMI 1.3
Bluetooth wireless
Motion Sensing controllers
Memory Card Slots on 600 model
802.11 Wireless
Standard Hard Drive

Would you rather spend 600 for a whole package at one time, or over 800 for the extras over a period of time for the Xbox360.

$300 Xbox360 Core
$100 20GB Hard Drive
$100 Wireless Adaptor

For this price you get a 500 PS3 with twice the features

$200 HD-DVD Add-on

Now the price for your system has risin above the PS3 which still has twice as many features.

You cant count games and accessories since both will cost identical. games wont rise above the normal because theres no need to. And companies like mad catz will always produce the cheapest accessories possible.

Possible for Sony to sell over 100 million PS3? Very likely since not only gamers will be interested in the system but anyone looking for a Blu-ray player will too.

» Piracy is and always be

Its just a matter of time like the guy said prevously, Iso loaders and game copying will come and dont think because its blu-ray its impossible to copy. People wont spend $1200 ona blu-ray copier but the great thing is that the ps3 reads blu-ray and therefore can be used in combination with the standard hd to store the data.... then we will develop an ftp program for the ps3 and BAM same thing with xbox

U r a *****ing tool u honestly think that having THE CHOICE to buy next gen video format is worse than being forced to buy it??? *****ing tool

   by kura (Unregistered) - 2006-06-25
 » it really IS worse

it means if u don't own both, u'll definately miss out on some titles because the studios won't bother opting for both....it's time and money wasting.

Thing is.. Sony WILL sell 100 Million Units..
Why?

Because sony is so damn stubborn.. they will have ps3
out in the market TILL it sells 100 Million just to be right
even if it took 20 years lol

   by darkdreamr (Unregistered) - 2006-06-26
 » wait!

OMG they said SELL? thats SO unlike sony!!!!

I mean.. usualy its Shipped..

Well hell.. for them to actually SELL 100 Million Units
make it 30 years lol.

Im sure they will claim Shipped within 4 - 5 years

Then the new litter of fanboys will all be screaming how shipped = sold..

then everyone who actually lives on the planet earth and KNOWS what shipped means compared to sold will pwn them... ahhh the circle of life.
