As some PlayStation 3 owners have already probably discovered by now, the existing PS One software currently available for download on the PlayStation Network doesn't work. The speculation regarding this is that there is supposedly a need to remove the certification key required to play games on Sony's portable platform. Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed with IGN that this speculation is indeed true. The explanation is that under the current setup, two different files (the ROM itself, and the certification key) are needed to activate PS1 software on the PSP, but such a system isn't needed for the PS3, hence the conflict. Don't worry though, as SEA manager Al de Leon notes that they'll be replacing the Older PS1 games for download with fixed versions come May. The SCEA manager notes, "Once the new games are uploaded, you'll be able to download the games straight to your hard drive and play them from there." Users who have already downloaded the old unfixed versions of the PS One titles on the PlayStation Network, do not have to pay for the new PS3 compatible versions a second time. There is still no clarification as to whether or not the "five downloads per license" rule still applies. Sony could not comment if the new version of the games that had multiplayer options disabled for PSP emulation would have those modes reimplemented for the PS3. |

Back in October of last year, Phil Harrison revealed during a Gamer's Day event that Sony is aiming for PlayStation Store prices of US$ 14.99 or less. Apparently, some people took this as gospel, and so were surprised when Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection carried a price tag of US$ 19.99 upon release. Speaking with IGN, Sony Computer Entertainment PR Manager Al de Leon clarified that "the PlayStation Store retail price for a piece of content depends upon the wholesale price set by the publisher." While some games, expansion packs, and other downloadable stuff will stick pretty close to the US$ 15 target price, some titles could exceed it. "The October Gamers Day [on October 19, 2006] was specific to titles at launch," said de Leon. "We haven't announced a specific price range or cap for downloadable games since launch, but as you can see on the Store, PS3 owners can purchase content at a variety of price points -- including demos and trailers for free, classic titles like Q*bert for $4.99, and full arcade ports like Tekken 5 for $19.99." |
