Researchers says Blu-Ray will drive PS3 sales - Image 1

Frank N. Magnid Associates director Mike Vorhaus has predicted that the Blu-ray drive of the PlayStation 3 will become its selling point in the future. This statement was based on the most recent consumers' DVD viewing habits on the PlayStation 2 (Sony.">PS2).

Based on information gathered by the team, over two-thirds of PS2 owners have used the console to play DVDs while 15 percent say they do this habitually. The trend has continued with the PS3, with a whopping 80 percent of those who own the console using it as a DVD player. One fourth of that number actually do so on a regular basis.

Judging from these findings, it looks like Vorhaus' prediction may become a reality. Historically speaking, there has always been a call for consoles to do more than just play games. Sony has decided to capitalize on this, and it looks like it will be paying off in spades.
