PS3 - Image 1Developer shagrath has released his update on his PS3 homebrew app, PS3 Media Server v1.0.2.1. It's actually a quickfix for this serious bug found in 1.02, which he released just the other day, which essentially prevents the application from running.

The Dot.Tunes application allows you to stream your iTunes to your PC as well as your PS3, PSP or Wii - Image 1You've got to hand it to those indie developers, they always have something up their sleeve to give us more bang for our buck with the gadgets that we have. A free application called Dot.Tunes does that and more.

It basically extends the serviceability of your iTunes library so that you can stream it on the net and play it right off your PC. What the application actually does is turn your iTunes library into an SQL database and sends it from your PC to the web using an Ajax front-end and multi-layered security system.

While the basic service of the application is free, plug-ins to stream your iTunes through your Wii's, PS3's or PSP's browser are also available at US$ 10 a pop. Also, there's another plug-in available that gives you a custom interface for your iPhone which extends the amount of music you can fit in it for US$ 20.

DotTunes, an Australian-based company, encourages people to open up their iTunes library to friends through the use of their products. They had this to say regarding the matter:

Why pay to podcast or for internet radio streams, when you can publish your own radio shows, TV programs or music mixes directly to your loyal fans? Dot.Tunes is not some lightweight iTunes utility. It's a fully developed web server application that supports mp3, AAC, aiff, .wav, mpeg, mp4, and .mov files, allowing you to share your iTunes library contents with your friends in other cities, your classmates across the dorm or the coworkers scattered throughout the building.

PSP/PS3 HD drive - Image 1Dvineo presented an intriguing accessory for the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Sony PlayStation Portable: An HD movie player! The drive has a wide range of compatible formats whether they be video, audio, images and game saves. You can get digital media from non-write protected discs, convert them to desired formats and store them to the PS3 hard drive or the PSP SD stick.

In terms of videos it can read MKV, Xvid, DivX, MPEG 1, M1P, MPEG 2, TS, M2P, WMV, ASF, MP4 and AVI. The interface lets you manage and back up files when you attach the drive to a PC. If you're into music, it can read CDs, iTunes and other popular formats. You can convert WAV files to MP3 with automatic completion of track details via the online server's help. What's more, management is as easy as dragging and dropping the data.

With the Xploder software, images can be viewed in a gallery as thumbnails on your PSP and PS3. Again, dragging and dropping is the operative term. The same is true about managing game saves that you saved for games.

The HD drive has a lot more to offer than just this. The tech savvy among you will find pleasure in the details entailed in the Dvineo fact sheet. If you want to learn more about it, follow the read URL and tell us what you think.

"No multimedia restrictions." That's the phrase that's starting to echo from one end of the gaming webs to another. According to IGN, for example, "The PS3 has no multimedia restrictions on even 1080p video. BitTorrent, ye shall be crashed!"

That BitTorrent comment. Funny. But really, it makes you think. You all know I'm a bit of an Xbox 360 fanboy (mostly because these are the games I've known for so long), but (don't quote me on this) I'm willing to admit that there are some of us who aren't exactly overjoyed with the video restrictions of the Xbox 360.

The PS3, on the other hand - is it because it's new and its multimedia potential is unexplored? Or is it really just a multimedia powerhouse? IGN points out that the PS3 can only play certain formats (but any media player can only play certain formats so kicking and screaming won't change that fact).

this machine owns

Here's more about the "unrestrictedness":
  • 720p and 1080p from a Memory Stick (compressed AVC format)
  • PSP-sized AVC and MP4 files play OK, as do MPEG1, MPEG2, standard-profile MP4 videos (no AVI, though - but you PSP people know that)
  • odd-sized videos (we assume IGN meant dimensions and resolutions that aren't really standard)
  • you can't reformat videos (i.e., you can't recompress the video with another compression/codec), but you can copy them from one device to another - does this mean let the piracy commence?
Wow. Unrestricted video viewing and at HD quality. The good news just keeps on coming in (as you should have heard by now, Sony allows you to change the OS of your PS3). Can't wait until I get my hands on the PS3 in a few more days!

Then I'll get some of my QJ buddies together and try to see if we can hook one or two huge 3.5" external SATA HDDs (or so [BOT]Bob and I are thinking) and start enjoying videos (innocent, clean "gaming" videos, of course - because we need all that hard drive space for, um, screenshots, yeah).
