PS3 Weekend Warrior - Image 1So what transpired in the world of Sony's PS3 this week? Nate Drake's newest adventure is certainly off to a good start. And then there's word that the PS3 is continuing its newfound sales spurt in the land down under. Oh, and here's a no-brainer: rumblings about new entries in two of the PS3's biggest franchises have started to trickle out from the rumor mill. All in all, another good week for the PS3. Well, except maybe for that one particular console they threw into the Bravia. It didn't seem to get too banged up though.

Killzone 2Compared to the six minutes of awesome in the Killzone 2 intro vid we saw earlier, this one requires a bit more attention and quite a lot of time. Dutch website GameKings has just released a full 40-minute mini-documentary on the making of Killzone 2. They've interviewed the key figures in Guerrilla Games and they reveal tons and tons of info, I tell you! Some may even be considered spoilers! Get comfy, guys. This is well worth it!

Killzone 2 - Image 1So while we're just sitting through the last few weeks before Killzone 2 gets released, some additional details have come to light. If any of you were able to play Killzone: Liberation on the PSP, you might remember those crazy attack dogs. Yeah, well, too bad dear old Snuffy won't be making a reappearance in K2. Instead, we get killer spiders! Ooooh!

Killzone 2Despite what you may have seen or heard of Killzone 2, Guerrilla Games director Mathijs de Jonge states that the game is actually not just full of grays - it's got a wider color palette too. More than that, he says that, compared to other shooters, the difference with K2 is "striking."

Guerrilla Games testing Killzone 2 Online - Image 1Guerrilla Games Director Mathijs De Jonge was the first one to confirm that upcoming FPS title Killzone 2 will have an extensive multiplayer component. That is good news for all those who've enjoyed the previous games on the PS2 and PSP platforms and are looking forward to this next-gen iteration.

Test Lead and Quality Assurance Manager Sebastian Downie had a recent blog entry over at the official Killzone 2 online site that touched briefly on the topic once again. He mentioned that their department had been doing a lot of testings recently that should make every fan excited about the game. He wrote:

Me and my boys have been mostly busy testing Online this past week and making sure that the rewards and ranking are working as intended as well as checking the collision and geometry for MP02, also known as "Road Block" currently, but I'm sure it'll get a much more exciting name before release.

Both Guerrilla Games and Sony Computer Entertainment have yet to name a concrete release date, but it is known that Killzone 2 is expected to hit retail stores during the first half of 2008. It was also implied a couple of days ago that a demo will be available soon for the game, so fans should definitely look out for that in the meantime.

Killzone 2 interview with Mathijis De Jonge - Image 1After getting their first hands on experience with Killzone 2, the folks down at CVG had a sit down with Guerrilla Games director Mathijs De Jonge, the same sit down where he revealed "extensive multiplayer features" for the game. Aside from that little gem they also talked about the AI and the visuals for the game.

In their hands on of the video game, CVG lauded how stunning the visuals are and noted the lack of loading screens and Jonge went further into it. He explains how they wanted everything to feel "realistic and believable" with a real Hollywood feel:

We want to have a seamless transition from cut-scenes right into the gameplay, so there's no loading pause or anything like that - it's all seamlessly integrated into the game.

Part of the reason behind this is that we wanted to create a very cinematic feeling; it's always first-person, you're always part of this world and it feels very immersive basically. We're doing 7.1 surround sound and lots of clever visual tricks to make sure that the player feels that they're a part of it.

Jonge also relates how Killzone 2's AI was modeled to deal with a destructible environment. AI will recognize objects it can use for cover, and objects that just aren't feasible (like exploding barrels). They'll be able to shoot out the lights to provide cover and also have improved group AI. They'll also be able to do the "lean and peek" system just as easily as you can.

All in all, it sounds like BBC was right on the money when they praised Killzone 2's realism - perhaps it wasn't just the visual feel of the video game but also the experience you get because of improved AI.

Killzone 2 to have extensive multiplayer features - Image 1Upcoming video game Killzone 2 has been under development for almost three years now and we've all seen its progress through the years. Considering the success of the PS2 iteration as well as the one on the PlayStation Portable, it is needless to say that it has a lot of expectations to meet.

One of those is its multiplayer features. Sony Computer Entertainment and developer Guerrilla Games have been very secretive on this one but the first confirmation came from the game's very own director Mathijs De Jonge.

He explained, "Co-op we're not talking about at the moment. We will have extensive multiplayer features. We're saving that for later". The confirmation is indeed very welcome but we have to say that it was rather expected.

When you really think about it, FPS games of today are not going to survive without that exciting multiplayer component. There's still no definite release date as of now but Sony mentioned before that it should come out during the first half of 2008.

We just hope Killzone 2 doesn't get delayed because of on-going debates concerning violence and "irresponsible video games". It should be remembered that BBC reviewed the game earlier this month and commented that it might be the next target because of its high level of realism.
