For all the graphical coolness of the first batch of PS3 games, it's the simplicity of Jenova Chen and Nicholas Clark's flOw that really feels like a new direction for gaming. The interface is simple, the controls even moreso, but the gameplay and feelings evoked by playing the game are simply refreshing. That's why we can't help but feel somewhat glum that flOw is getting delayed. Instead of getting released some time this month, word's been sent out that the game will now be out sometime in January 2007. The PS3 version of the game will get substantial upgrades from its original incarnation as a flash game, with new creatures to control and some gameplay tweaks beyond your usual audiovisual enhancements. There isn't an explanation yet as to why the delay has happened, but we'll be optimistic and think that the delay was caused by someone eating a blue dot in thatgamecompany's offices. Still, if you're looking to get a bit of a flOw fix, you can always try and hunt for the original flash game online or pick it up from us. It might not have multiplayer like this new version will purportedly possess, but it's still a fine solitary venture for gamers looking for something new in their experiences. Enjoy! |

Sony's PS3 may be leaps and bounds in terms of technology, but it's surprising how long it took them to notice this gem of a game. It's nothing violent or demonic and, as creepy as it might be to look at, it's surprisingly relaxing to play. The game, good gamers, is Flow. Developed by Jenova Chen and Nicholas Clark for their Masters in Fine Arts thesis, this game does happen to combine simple, engaging gameplay with artistic value. The organism just follows your mouse, and you can left-click to move faster. To advance a level, just eat the red dots for each level, and go to the previous level by eating the blue dot. You might not think you'll need to use the blue dot, but in a game like this, it seemed strangely fitting to have boss organisms six times your size trying to eat you instead of the other way around. Escape sometimes felt like the best option. Best of all, you can actually play it right now without thinking of downloading it for the PS3. Jenova and company opened up the file for public download on their website. Even better, we're offering it up for you. So don't just stand there, get to swimming the lifestreams of the internet and try this game out for yourself. Oh, and yes, that was an FFVII reference. Enjoy! Download: [Flow] |
