The days of PlayStation 3 homebrew may be at hand soon, but developing useful applications is a long road in itself. Team ICE continues to flex their coding muscles to pool both knowledge and experience in that field, and so the same guys who give kudos to Dark AleX and Mathieulh for their contributions to the PSP scene now have released version 1.2 of the Ice Pack. Course through the full story for more details. |

Not long after Segher and Brushing demonstrated a savegame exploit on the Nintendo Wii, Team ICE came forward with an exploit of their own for the Sony PlayStation 3. Yet again it involves a .TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) file, but this time it invokes a specific error in the heap data area of Sony's next generation console. More information at the full story. |

User TicHack from PS3-Hacks Forums just discovered a possible TIFF exploit for the PlayStation 3 running on U.S. Firmware 1.93. According to the user, he copied some of the TIFF images in the console's HDD after they appeared on the memory card.
As you all know, the PS3 doesn't deal with these things so TicHack received the "Corrupted Data" method. What he did next was took the HDD off and viewed the TIFF image on the Photo Menu. After taking away the hard drive, the PlayStation 3 unit in question continued running on FW 1.93. TicHack checked some of the features on the XMB and they are working all fine. We're not saying that this is already a full-blown exploit and TicHack said it best when he mentioned that this particular method could only serve as the gateway to the exploit. A video has also been posted as proof of concept.
QJ.NET would like to thank Pirate for the heads up! |

A new video that supposedly documents the ability to play PlayStation One backups on the PS3 has been posted on YouTube by Paolohack. While we can't say it for certain, the video does look pretty legit. Still, take this with a grain of salt first.
Anyway, this was apparently done using the new PS3 TIFF exploit that was discovered more than a week ago by members of the PS3Hax Network website (thanks to Phil19 for the tip!). You can read more about the exploit by clicking on the Read link. The TIFF exploit apparently doesn't work with PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 backups yet, as more testing is required. Paolohack notes that the exploit was tested on a PAL console running firmware 1.81. The video embed's below. Check it out and tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment. |

QJ poster Pirate has just shared some particularly happy news for us, over at the QJ Forums. According to his post, a TIFF exploit on the PS3 is confirmed to exist. However, before we start doing cartwheels in celebration of this news, we have to point out that it has just been confirmed to exist, but the actual exploit is yet to be FOUND. Just to make sure we don't miss anything, here's the news that Pirate posted in its entirety:The GODS @ Paradox have just shared their third release MotorStorm_USA_PS3-PARADOX this weekend, which includes a nice NFO File as promised! To quote from it: | sPECIAL nOTE: | | | | Hmzzz i think we have news to give do we? Ever wondered why the PS3 | | is such a better machine than a xbox360? simply because they | | implement too much stuff in one time! "SCEI" dont do that, you | | need to learn a bit more from Microsoft on this part even when | | they have forgotten a hypervision hack on kernel 4532 and 4548 | | they fixed it very fast! And what do we see on the PS3? Up until | | firmware 1.51 we still see holes! Why? You guys dont have the | | right persons to work with or is it just the pressure from | | the big boss? So for now dont update higher than | | 1.51 since 1.54 hasnt yet been tested, and 1.51 had a few tiny | | things fixed, but it didnt stop us much :-D Ohhh btw ever | | wondered if those updates are required on a disc? Actually all | | games up to now work without any update At least work fine on | | 1.32 :-) Thats all for now! So seeya tiff tiff and bye bye | So in summary, PS3 Devs should focus on finding that TIFF Exploit so that unsigned code can be ran, a PS3 iSO Loader, and just about anything else on v1.32 and lower... also, those who wish to play online can now update to v1.51 (since it still contains exploitable holes, obviously lower Firmware has even more though) without worry... very useful news indeed! So... will the PS3 soon be saying "Hello World"? We'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, feel free to join the discussion about a tiff exploit for the PS3 over at the QJ Forums.
