Alien Breed - Image 1If you're a fan of alien slaughter, you'd probably remember Alien Breed as a cult classic. Oh man, it's up there among the ranks of Zombies Ate My Neighbors (for the zombie fans) and Bionic Commando (for the militaristic Tarzan types). So guess what we heard today? Team17 is actually re-releasing Alien Breed next year, but... at what form will it take and for what console? DLC, remake, port, or what?

PS3 - Image 1 We guess after everything has been said and done, PlayStation 3 will still be loved in Europe. We all know about the launch delays and launch announcements delays and every single bad press that has plagued Sony ever since. Despite all those, it has been reported yesterday that fans are still willing to welcome the console with open arms.

Like this group for example: some members of the UK development community talked with gaming site GamesIndustry recently and reflect on their views about PS3 and everything in between. Sports Interactive's Miles Jacobson seemed somewhat hopeful as he mentioned that the delay is actually beneficial:

I'm excited by the amount of quality in the launch titles for Europe, and the five month delay has certainly helped from that perspective. Cost could become an issue later on in the cycle, and a good online system will be important, but for early adopters, it'll be all about the games.

While the first generation titles are already excellent, as far as Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley is concerned, the second wave of games will do it for Sony. He exclaimed:

It's not been the smoothest of run-ups to launch so far but the technology, once you get to grips with it, is fantastic. Most first generation games will have developers just getting things running well enough to satisfy Sony. In my opinion its the second wave of PS3 games that will begin to tap into its power.

Lastly, Team 17 Studio Director Martyn Brown mentioned that the Cell architecture is not a problem at all for developers, in contrast to most reports. He explained:

There was a lot of rumour-mongering prior to the PS3 development hardware arriving that it would require huge teams and untold complexities. There's certain elements of that which ring true, but only for titles that are wildly ambitious in terms of range and content detail, but as for day-to-day development, we've more or less taken it in our stride.

lemmings - Image 1 If the PlayStation 3 demo pack for Team 17's Lemmings is any point of reference, it seems the team experienced little difficulty when Lemmings was transitioned into downloadable content for the PS3.

"Largely speaking, we've had little problem adopting to the PlayStation3," said Team17 studio director Martyn Brown. "But then again it would be foolhardy to assume we are 'bashing the metal' on the hardware with Lemmings as much as something like Heavenly Sword or MotorStorm."

Brown went further on to dispel the previous rumors that developing for the PS3 would require massive amounts of resources for any studio that decided to endorse Sony's console. "There's certain elements of that ring true, but only for titles that are wildly ambitious in terms of range and content detail, but as for day-to-day development, we've more or less taken it in our stride."

This is said in light of Sony's recent announcements for their March 23rd launch in Europe. Given that several other studios have kept mum in light of a recent NDA with Sony, we'll await further comments from their side.

Before you can live, you must climb!

Lemmings is a fifteen-year old franchise that has seen numerous incarnations through the years. While the gameplay mechanics have always managed to keep gamers hooked, I was one of those who was turned off by the premise. All I knew about the game was the player's job: to keep the lemmings from dying by whatever means necessary, and that didn't really sound like fun.

I guess working for QJ has its surprises then, as they wanted my impressions on the demo of Team 17's PS3 version of the game. When I politely declined the offer at first, the words, "Do you want me to fire you?" brought out that instinctual response to live, a trait lemmings sorely needed. And so, here we are with an outsider's view into the world of rodent saving. Funny thing is, it's actually kind of fun.

No lemmings were actually harmed in the making of this article. Except for the ones in the Full Article.
