PS3 - Image 1Developer shagrath has released his update on his PS3 homebrew app, PS3 Media Server v1.0.2.1. It's actually a quickfix for this serious bug found in 1.02, which he released just the other day, which essentially prevents the application from running.

PS3 Media - Image 1

QJ reader Andreas Heim alerts us that he wrote a how-to on his blog that instructs folks on how to set up a linux UPnP media server that has PlayStation 3 support. The how-to was made possible by the recent update for MediaTomb.

Based on how this not-that-tech-y blogger's understanding of the how-to, you have to get MediaTomb running and then you have to make a few modifications to it to get it to work with the PS3.

Mr. Heim notes though that for now, MediaTomb only supports the PS3's native mpeg4 format. He also notes that it all doesn't "work out of the box" for him. For the information on the "editing" that needs to be done, and the complete how-to by Andreas, feel free to head to it using our "read" link below.

Oh, and before we go, Andreas asks that if someone figures out how to do this without the "editing" please let him know.

The architecture that Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is based upon allows peer-to-peer networking of PC units, networked appliances, and even some wireless devices. Sony's PlayStation 3 clearly fits into that list but it's kind of curious why people haven't tried it yet on the console.

Online site PS3mods has compiled a list of UPnP media servers for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and Python. They mentioned that among the ones listed below, they were only able to test Nero MediaHome. It was working alright but it wasn't a perfect fit.

Feel free to try the media servers below yourselves. If the PS3 is compatible with any of these, the media servers will appear on the XMB right away, doing away with accessing the web browser first.
