ShareMyGame.com offers sharing of PC games through its gaming web site - Image 1

Imagine being able to play high-end games you aren't normally able to run on your PC. Actually, this is quite possible now with a web-based service being offered by StreamMyGame through a games-sharing site and a software plug-in which can remotely play games left by posters who leave hypertext links of their software on the site.

This new service is currently available for games compatible with Windows XP, Vista and games based on DirectX8, DirectX9, DirectX10 and OpenGL formats. The company plans to extend the capabilities of the service to a Linux platform, enabling PC games to be played remotely on PS3 and other web-based devices such as DVD players, set top boxes, networked media devices and even mobile phones.

Richard Faria, CEO of StreamMyGame, had this to say about the new web service they are availing:

We are embarking on a new paradigm in the gaming industry fuelled by advances in computer hardware, network speeds and the want of gamers to have more freedom. We network the power of their main PC so it can be used to play high end games on other PCs and laptops around the home. I believe the demand for high resolutions will drive the sales of high end PC hardware

The Linux version will have an estimated release date by the fourth quarter of this year. Other practical applications of the web service include file sharing, as well as other practical streaming PC applications such as sharing live videos that are medical, geographical, architectural, automotive, scientific and multimedia in nature.

For those of you who want to look into this service provided by StreamMyGame, you can access the website through the read link below.

Image - Image 1 In an interview conducted by QJ.net with Starz' online digital movie distribution service "VONGO", it was revealed that the service could make its way to Sony's powerhouse console.

"QJ: Is there any possibility this service might also be made compatible with other digital distribution platforms such as the PlayStation 3 or Apple's iTV in the future?

VONGO:
... As to Sony, we have a deep and long relationship there, as they are one of our largest content partners. There are many possibilities that we see with Sony and the PS3 is clearly one of them."

It should be noted that the interview was conducted in the earlier half of the year, however as of firmware update 1.80, the PS3 has become a DLNA compatible medial player, capable of "seeing" the VONGO media player folder on Windows XP and Vista machines, however, these files still read as incompatible.

We spotted a few more details regarding the new firmware for Sony's next gen PS3 console. If you're running Windows Vista on your PC, then this will be good news for you. According to Carl Nelson of the HCW Tech Blog, firmware 1.80 will let you share media on your Vista-running PC with the PS3. Well, Vista does support DLNA after all.

If you're still running on Windows XP, it seems that upgrading to Windows Media Player 11 and fiddling with the settings a bit will still let you share your media. Some formats are still not supported though, such as native .ts files and lossless WMA files as well as DivX/XviD files. Anyway, here's a look at the PS3's XMB streaming media interface.

Nelson also notes that video streaming seems a bit stifled at the moment, and recommends that you "need to demux, convert the audio to stereo, then remux again". Mac users, on the other hand, are advised to try installing either TwonkyMedia (if you have money) or the VideoLAN VLC media player (if you don't).

Yes, we *heart* you too, Mark. - Image 1Between Gears of War on the one end and Unreal Tournament 3 on the other - not to mention Square Enix - Mark Rein (vice president of Epic Games) must be one jolly soul. Very jolly, very happy, one interview with GameInformer during Midway Games' Day 2007 is all you need to see why. Hey, he describes himself as "Mr. Optimism," and that's bound to be a good thing.

For example, when GI asks him, and we quote, "Do you think Sony is in trouble?" Rein replies, and we quote, "No, god, no. Somebody asked me that earlier, and I was like, 'What a ridiculous question.'" And it's not just because he feels confident about UT3's chances on the PS3 - which is why Epic Games is also looking to move copies of UT3 for the 360, too.

"So as long as people are willing to pay the price for the machine - and I’m sure lots of people are - I think they're hopefully in a good situation." If you ask him, PlayStation Network works fine, the games are of "high quality," and he thinks Sony's gonna be fine. Hey, he likes Resistance and is looking forward to MotorStorm.

And the Wii, for that matter. It seems that comments he made on the Wii and its games may have been misunderstood. Replying to impressions that he may have said some negative things about the Wii, he replied:

It wasn't a statement about the Wii itself, it was about the games that will come out for it and how people will bring games on it that are just there because of the controller, and I wasn't exactly wrong, was I?... I always said, "Nintendo will make great games." And, sure enough, Wii Sports is frickin' awesome. So I think they'll do well, too. I bought Wario—it's fun, I like the games they made for it.

If Mark were to make an essay on today's attitudes, it might be on the ugliness of negativity. "I've really noticed this over the last couple of years. It's really turned a corner from positivity to negativity, and it's overwhelming sometimes. It makes you want to kill yourself." He may have been misunderstood as (overly) critical in the past, but when you hear this guy heap critical praise for all three consoles, it kinda makes you realize what a big heart he actually has. He's one honest fellow, and he's well-known for his honest assessments about Epic Games.

Anyway, on to the other important stuff.
  • For PC owners, Unreal 3 will support D3D10 right out of the box. Don't worry about future-proofing your rig, though: Mark says elsewhere that Epic will continue supporting Windows XP for quite some time to come.
  • Too early for Epic to talk about Xbox-PC multiplayer or Windows Live-specific plans. (We're wondering, with THREE platforms running UT3... er...)
  • Because GI asked - again - the question. No immediate plans to bring Gears to PC. To clarify: it will run on a PC, no problem there, it's just a question of "when." And "when" ain't now. Also, Epic's busy supporting Gears, so no word on potential sequels for now.

Achtung! SIXAXIS!

Here's another one. After one bashed PC driver for a SIXAXIS to talk to, this is PS3-connect.de's zoople with his own version of Windows XP driver für den SIXAXIS controller. It's the same deal when it comes to results: the motion sensors won't work with this yet, and the drivers themselves aren't from Sony. Installation is almost straightforward - drivers to install, something to unpack, plug, and play the PS3 controller. Here are the instructions, crudely interpreted from the Google translation:
  • Install libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe, which comes in the zip file below.
  • Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe
  • Plug the SIXAXIS to the PC (via the USB cable), which should have come with your purchased PS3. If you don't have a PS3, what did you do, buy the SIXAXIS stand-alone?
  • Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once. (Nothing said about the boo-boos that would result if you run it twice)
  • Push the PS button if the program doesn't "handshake" with the SIXAXIS (we think, based on our research, that's what it meant).
Finally, an indicator that this thing might work out in Mac OS X, too - if you execute under Boot Camp. Here's the download link for the drivers. No one tell Microsoft we're running their competitor's controller on the PC (eh, not that we don't do the same thing with the Wiimote, anyway).

SIXAXIS to PC as USB HID

Surprising? It was only a matter of time. Yes, the SIXAXIS can be used in Windows. wraggster was able to come up with a driver for you PC to recognize the PS3 controller. It works as a USB HID on Windows, but he still recommends that your OS should be Windows XP or higher.

Here are the instructions:
  1. Download and install the filter driver (libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe).
  2. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe
  3. Plug the SIXAXIS into your PC.
  4. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.
  5. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it doesn't see it straight away.
Now before anything else, we've been hearing that the driver doesn't work for a couple of people. We're really not sure why, but if you follow the instructions carefully, we're sure you'd do fine. We've even gotten confirmation that someone was able to run it on a MacBook Pro via Boot Camp Win XP.

Yeah, the motion-sensing doesn't work, but hey!, it's a damn good start as any other! If the Wiimote's motion-sensors are already recognized, then soon enough, the SIXAXIS would be just as competent.

Ó

We remember back in the heyday when yom stated in our comments section that the PS3 was just a "4,000 dollar computer for 600 dollars." Now whatever your qualms might be, let's not get into the whole financial hoopla about it. What matters is that the PS3 is a computer. The simple fact that Linux can be booted on it is enough for people to know of what its shell can support.

So have you installed your Linux OS yet? We've had a fair share of our The Penguin's coverage for the past few days, now it's time to explore into the next frontier. Knowing that the PS3 can handle Linux, then whatever Linux can do, most likely the PS3 can support as well. It doesn't take a brainy Dr. Kawashima to put two and two together and say, "Hey! Why not boot Windows XP on my PS3?"

This was bound to happen. Great feat, huh? It uses QEMU (that's an open-source virtual machine application) to boot WinXP. Unfortunately, the downside to the video is that it doesn't show, say, or indicate any specific instructions of how to do it. We can't read the text on the screen, and we don't know what's going on and what the user is typing. If you guys have any assumptions, suggestions, and/or objections, feel free to comment below!

And oh, from Pranav: "[WinXP on PS3] will be very slow, so it won't be THAT usable..."
