Today the gaming gods smile on three thousand lucky souls who've been chosen to beta test the online version of the Metal Gear series. Dubbed Metal Gear Online, the gameplay was based on the soon-to-be released Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Kojima Productions first announced this game during its recent Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party. For people wondering what's it like being in a certain unshaven commando's combat boots, they can finally test out their stealth and close-quarter-combat skills against up to 16 people online. Don't expect a certain colonel to shout out your name, though, if you somehow get yourself killed.

Anyway, it is rather unfortunate that the beta testing seems to have been isolated to Japanese gamers for now. From what we've seen from the previous videos and reports of the game, the rest of us can only curse the lucky dogs who are playing MGO and wait in nail-biting anticipation until a commercial release can finally reach our shores.

Until then, here are a few more screenshots of what the opening screens of Metal Gear Online looks like.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars screenshots from Beta - Image 1

After seeing that slaughter gameplay montage for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC), we're sure you're left wanting more. You're in luck as we have uncovered eye candy for you, courtesy of WorthPlaying.

Activision and Splash Damage's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is currently undergoing a public beta test and even if you've been gathering moss under that rock, you can still get a beta key. Anyway, the batch of screenshots we have today are from the beta but they still look pretty, though not as pretty as some players would have liked. In the screens, we see some of the maps that we'll be brawling in when this FPS title comes out.

We also get a peek at the lobby where players can choose which side they'll fight as (Strogg or GDF), and what unit they choose to be. We also see a spectator button smack in the middle of the two factions' icons which will be nifty if you want to check out your next opponents.

Anyway, enough babble from us. We'll keep you updated on more news regarding Enemy Territory: Quake Wars as they happen. In the meantime, check out the screenshots.

Gamer Advisory Panel - Warhawk beta rejection letter - Image 1Those who didn't get into the Warhawk for PlayStation 3 beta got this polite rejection letter that hints at future beta phases:

Dear G.A.P. member,

Thanks for you recent interest in the Warhawk beta test. At the moment, we have all the beta testers we need for this phase. But don't lose hope: there may be more Warhawk beta test opportunities in the near future. Keep an eye on your inbox. We'll contact you if we have space in any further phases of the Warhawk beta test.

Thanks!

The PlayStation Underground

At this point it's not clear how the beta testers in future phases are going to be selected. It's possible that Warhawk will select from the names of people who signed up for this current beta, because it seems a bit unfair for those who got rejected to have to sign up all over again.

And it is a beta worth getting into. Have you seen the videos? Like the recent rocket launcher video and the video before that from the beta? And the gameplay video on defending your base in Warhawk? And the screenshots? This game is looking good - not just in terms of appearance and graphics, but in terms of physics and gameplay.

Warhawk for the PS3 is the successor to Warhawk on the PSOne. It's being developed by Incognito Entertainment (Incog Inc.) and will be published by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), and the game is set to be released in September 2007 in North America for about US$ 59.99. There will also be a European release at around that same time.

The Warhawk Beta sign-up form - Image 1We dip our Nemesis' wings to informant DaMist who just reminded us that Warhawk Beta sign-ups are now commencing. After you've completed signing up for the game's test phase via the Incognito Entertainment official site, you can verify your registration by powering up your PlayStation 3 and accessing: friends> account management> transaction> management> view services.

If a Warhawk icon pops up, then congratulations - you're now a Beta player.

The other way to find it is via PlayStation Underground's Beta test website. Just punch in your user details and it should inform you if you've been registered. We imagine players still feeling sour over missing out on the PlayStation Home Beta may find a second chance in this news lead.

Note: Dipping wings (aka "waggling") is an airman's way to salute while flying a plane. Once again, kudos to DaMist.
