Physical games media may be at the sunset of their lives, according to
David Perry. Speaking at an opening keynote in UK for the 4th Annual
Develop Conference in Brighton, the GaiKai founder expressed his belief
that "It won't be long before 100 per cent of games are all online." |

A few months ago, Acclaim's David Perry said some pretty harsh words that got him into the headlines, saying that E3 is broken and an embarrassment, and that Sony has no chance of making money on the PlayStation 3.Apparently he wasn't through speaking his mind. This guy gets into the news more often for what he says than for his games. More bashing from Perry in the full article. |

Although Sony's contender in this generation of consoles had a rocky start, the PlayStation 3 has been picking up some traction lately. Has it finally picked up its much needed momentum? Capcom seems to think so. According to the publisher, the PlayStation 3 has reached "full swing." More details in the full article. |

Acclaim boss David Perry seems to be making a habit out of bold claims. Remember how he said that E3 was broken and an embarrassment? Well now he says that Sony has "pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3." His E3 claim was valid, from what we've seen of the event, but this claim may be premature. What do you guys think? |

Yet another one boards the "hate E3" wagon. David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment and chief creative officer at Acclaim, has called the event "broken," "stupid," and an "embarrassment." More after the "read more" link. |

They say that when David Perry talks, everybody should listen. Well, the legendary developer just spoke about many things regarding Nintendo Wii's success, Sony PSP's lackluster performance, and everything else in between. And we believe you guys are rather interested to hear his thoughts.Perry was all praises for Nintendo and the effective business approach it is currently taking for the motion-sensitive console. According to him, Nintendo is so innovative and that it has the track record to shake the competitor's world at a moment's notice. His thoughts on the Wii is best summed up in this quote: You can't assume it is going to be like the other platforms, because you are going to have Nintendo taking most of the sales. And if Nintendo really sees you as a threat, they will take the moves to wipe you out. They are not going to let you win. David Perry was quoted before saying that the UMD format for the PlayStation Portable is already dead. Despite attempts to simplify control schemes (as compared to the PS3 and PS2) to engage casual gamers, Sony failed in securing enough exclusives and accepting ports contributed to the downward trend: You are going to end up with exactly that frustration- why is the game not as good? If you have a PlayStation 3 version of a game, the PSP version is going to be like the bastard stepchild of that game. They really need to restart the PSP program in my book. Aside from his current racing MMORPG project dubbed as "Top Secret", David Perry used to developed a new IP called Plague. However, he stopped working on it because it began when the user base for next-gen consoles is not yet established. He admits that every once in a while, developers need to think business-wise to avoid losing money. When asked if he's going to continue working on it now that there are enough next-gen gamers, David Perry answered, "Absolutely. When there are 100 million PlayStation 3's out there, it's a whole different conversation. But we're not there". |

David Perry is a man to listen to. He's got the resume to beat: 25 years of making games, Earthworm Jim, MDK, Messiah, a seat in the Advisory Board at the Game Developers Conference - all that stuff. So it isn't surprising that when the man speaks about games, it's like dogma. And dogma can be scary. In a recent interview with Disposable Media, Perry talked about the appeal of the Wii. It's practically the fastest selling console right now, with its appealing graphics and interactive interface. But David Perry thinks that the magic won't last. In time, better innovations will come, and with it, better interfaces and graphics power. The Wiimote is fun, there's no doubt about it. What other controller offers more fun than being able to swing your virtual bat in real life? However, Perry doesn't believe the Wii achieves the end-all and be-all of interactivity. "The Nintendo Wii isn't the final solution to that sort of interactive interface," he said, "I think we'll always see more and more interesting approaches to interface". Interface isn't the only thing that sells in the gaming industry, though. "The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, they always have been," said Perry. "When a game comes out - a game like Halo or something, something they haven't seen before - they'll drop everything and they'll drop their Wii controllers when it does." Fortunately, the Wii has nothing to worry about yet. Perry himself admits that the PS3 still hasn't reached its potential. He says that "the machine hasn't succeeded yet in what it can deliver." With its high price tag and difficult programming among the factors hampering its climb to the top, the PS3 can't be considered a major threat. But "it's only a matter of time before the PS3 starts achieving what it offers to consumers." So what do you think reader? Is the Wii an evolutionary dead end, or a first step in the right direction? Let us know what you think through your comments. For the entire interview, click on issue #8 after the source link. |
