The time of controversy and lawsuits have passed. Team Ninja has moved on and so have Tomonobu Itagaki and his crew of ex-Team Ninja members. Teaming up with young but skilled engineers, the new team is now hard at work on a new game. Speaking with James Mielke of 1UP, Itagaki and his right-hand men spill a few droplets of detail (and scotch) to give us an idea of what they're up to. |

Resident Evil 5 may mark the end of an era. Producer Jun Takeuchi says that the game is "the last of its kind" and that "a reboot is in order" for Resident Evil 6. Completely new gameplay, or completely new story? Will we at least finally be able to shoot while mobile? |

It's a sad day in gaming to see EGM go. The mag has officially ceased publication as of this month. EGM, which was one of the longest-running video game mags around, will release its "final" issue online. Go to the full article to see the issue's awesome cover, which will sadly never be printed. |

1UP's James Mielke was ranting three weeks ago regarding the blatant use of the words "Call of", "Rise of", "Empire," "Nations," and "Ops" in game titles. (He was talking about Call of Juarez.) Well, we've lived through this type of stereotyping, but it doesn't mean we can't make fun of it right? Makes us wonder, do devs consult some sort of list when thinking of a title?Anyway, the guys at GameSetWatch set out to come up with the "most stereotypical video game name... evah". The turnout was pretty crazy: Simon Carless (Game Developer/Gamasutra EIC) "Quaternion: The Beige-ning", Jill Duffy (Game Developer managing editor) came up with "Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Call Of Duty: Revenge Of Duty", and Brandon Sheffield (Game Developer features editor) gave the hilarious "Pauly Shore's XTREME Nude Wakeboarding II: The Awakening". The winner was Frank Cifaldi (Gamasutra features editor) with "WWII: World War II". My fellow QJ staffers gave a few bits of their own. Victor B. came up with two - "Space Shooter: The Star Galaxy Trek Wars of Gradius" and "Final Generic Fantasy RPG Quest XX" - while our researcher R gave me this - "Death Ride Alliance: Blade War XIII". We're sure you have your own game title cliche and we'd love to hear about it. The more trite, the better. Ready, set, go! |

I'm admittedly a Tekken fan (Whoa, I said "I"...and Lei rocks!), but like a good Kung-Fu master, the rule of thumb for many a gamer like me is to keep one's mind open to new experiences, always looking at what sort of new stuff can be expected from the other guys. Which brings us to this hot title coming up for the PS3: Virtua Fighter 5.
Among other areas, such as the team's challenge of building around the PS3's cell processor and game balance issues between the two versions, the duo was asked about one hot-button topic - the game's lack of online play. According to them, the feature was intentionally left out of the PS3 pack for various reasons - one being the expected lag time during bouts. The other reason was more sentimental - it just doesn't "feel" right if you're not going mano-a-mano at the arcades when playing this title, and thus the team felt that the game would be truer to form if they encouraged people to still meet up in the arcade. True enough - victories just don't feel as fulfilling without a satisfactory handshake with our felled opponents. One other (slightly off-topic) side that guys may want to read up on is the group's discussions on the removal of the AI mode from the PS2's Evolution game. And by the way: Shimoda's a Jacky player, and Tohru's a Brad user. For the full interview, read up on the link. |

It's been almost a month since we picked up any news on the PS3 release of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, but this time around, more info's popped out of the shadows. 1up game's James Mielke interviews NGS
Yosuke Hayashi on what fans can expect from this latest installment of
the Ninja Gaiden franchise, from graphics, gameplay, and to how it'll
match up to other upcoming action game genres like Capcom's Devil May Cry 4.
First up, Hayashi points that while NGS will still be main plot from its Xbox kin, it is slated to make full use of the PS3 's computing power. He further adds that one indicator of this usage is the cut-scenes. Pre-rendered in the Xbox installment, the cut-scenes for NGS will re-done in real-time gameplay graphics, and the player will enjoy a more immersive game atmosphere as they play along in-game, like being able to duke it out in the famous cut-scene between Ryo and Goku in the Xbox release (Hmm, sounds like MGS3). Another major upgrade in this game's performance will be the addition of playable characters - players can now use the feisty, warhammer-wielding (and S&M dominatrix-looking) Rachel. Hayashi reports that she's gonna have her own unique move list and and weapons - special attention is going to her warhammer, given its lackluster performance in Ryo-kun's hands (Ninja+Heavy Weapons? Naah). Team Ninja plans to interlace her with Ryo's story, with players switching between her and Ryo during major plot points to give them a better perspective of what's going as the story moves on, a bit like Ada Wong's scenarios from RE4. More on this interview after this jump! |
