Bella's Arcade Machine - Image 1Now this is gamer love. A dad builds his daughter, Bella, her very own arcade machine and put it in her room, complete with 250 arcade classics and comes in flaming hot pink. News is a little old, but I figured I'd share it with you guys. Details, screens, and a video in the full article.

Big black boxes of *teh ultimate* power?

A lot of you guys are probably already enjoying using that big black box as a tinker-happy testbed of sorts for your Linux stuff, probably immersed in the search for the boot-game-from-the-HD holy-grail.

Some of you are probably annoyed that Linux can't get to the RSX chip, while some of you are probably content with using your PS3 to run MAME and other Emulators. Some of you are probably just happy with the fact that you've got Firefox on YDL, and your home entertainment system can now double as a slightly slower PC.

Now that we're amused and immersed with our PS3 hobby-kit, shouldn't all this remind us of something? Eurogamer points out:

It will probably be a matter of months before someone develops an operating system, based on Linux, which installs through a simple process on the PS3 and presents the user with a nice, simple interface, controlled by the SIXAXIS pad, for playing a variety of media, streaming from servers on your network, reading webpages, playing emulated ROMs, and so on.

Sound familiar? It is, of course, exactly what the Xbox became when it was chipped, had its hard drive replaced and was updated with a piece of software called XBMC - Xbox Media Centre. The PS3 is a more powerful system, which benefits greatly from things like USB ports, built-in card readers and a wireless LAN card, all of which enhance its functionality as a media system, while a faster processor will make the playback of high-definition content, such as H.264 video, a possibility - so it will be a very valuable system as a media box, just as a chipped Xbox was in its day.

Makes you chuckle a bit huh?

A few days ago, Jurai dropped a gift on the PS3 Linux forums: the AdvanceMame .106 PS3 Binary. Basically the building blocks for MAME emulation on the PS3. And it's hot. People are obviously looking into the variety of things they can get their PS3 to run. I mean just look at YouTube.

See? Apparently the launch titles aren't enough to sate the more technical of PS3 owners.

Then just recently we find this questionable video of someone allegedly figuring out a way to get the Wii to run burnt DVD-R copies of games. If that's true (doubtful), then that means that people have either figured out the inner workings of the code behind Wii games, or they've found a way to get past Wii's copy security.

Let's assume that some time in the near future people have figured out how Wii games work. I mean they all eventually do anyway. Given enough time and motivation, coders come up with emulations for anything (or workarounds for anything).

Now it's time for us to ask you guys a (not so) stupid question. What would happen if people come up with a Wii emulator that runs on linux? Wii games on your PS3? Why not, they've already allegedly managed to get their PC to "see" a Wiimote. Yes, we know, there isn't even a decent emulator for the previous generation of consoles, but still, things are possible.

Wiimulator?

Some of you guys are thinking about it already. What do the rest of you have to say? One thing's for sure though, you won't be able to use the archival purposes excuse on this one.

Courtesy of mamedev.orgLet's keep this simple folks. Jurai, the creator of the Mario and MAME emulation on PS3 videos dropped a gift on our PS3 Linux forums. To put it in layman's terms, it's the building blocks for MAME usage on your PS3.

AdvanceMame .106 PS3 Binary is basically the emulation code you'd need to use on the Linux in your PS3 to run arcade games, minus any ROMS. Under normal circumstances, MAME executables can have download sizes as large as a few hundred MB because of the number of ROMs they include with the downloadable file. This makes it a whole lot more manageable to download, but it also means that newbies to codes and binaries and other techie terms need not apply.

Of course, it isn't perfect yet, which is why the homebrew community would be of great help in getting this to work on anything you can think off. Let's let Jurai take the stage with what he's done so far:

Hopefully I zipped all the necessary binaries, advcfg should setup necessary directories and inform you of where ROMs go as i recall. Once ROMs are in the right directory you can simply run "advmame romsetname" to start the emulator (advancemenu failed on compilation and i did not have time to mess with making it work).

It compiles straight from advancemame source so if you want to compile yourself just grab that, but be warned mame takes awhile to build.

Note: Compiling yourself does give you the added benefits in that all documentation, etc. is installed. I've never done a Linux MAME compile before so, I really cant vouch that you 'only' need these binaries, so someone please report on their functionality if you get a chance.

If you're interested in seeing where this can go, or if you've got a pretty good knowledge of Linux, check out the PS3 Linux forums and the thread linked below to thank Jurai for putting this up and to see how you can help. Enjoy the download!

Oh Jurai, you nutty guy. First you regale us with the promise of Super Mario Brothers action as emulated on the PS3, and now you bring old-school arcade goodness.

Jurai commented on our previous post on the PS3 Mario a few hours ago, saying that there was another video up. This time, he's used the Linux OS on the PS3 to run MAME, and even showed a quick peek at arcade-styled Pac-Man.

For those who don't know what MAME is, it stands for "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator," designed to play different arcade ROMs on your PC. Now, since Sony's new console is basically a computer that runs Linux, it seemed like a matter of time till someone decided to run a Linux-based MAME program on it.

In any case, why keep you from the video right? Here's the clip uploaded by PowerofJurai onto YouTube. Enjoy!
