Dark Sector Director Sinclair: Unreal Engine is causing delays - Image 1It was reported a couple of weeks ago that the original Q3 release schedule of third-person shooter Dark Sector was pushed back to early 2008. According to developer Digital Extremes, the delay is due to the overcrowding of big titles this holiday.

Seems logical, really, but it seems now that there's something deeper into this. Gaming site Gameplayer recently had a hands-on session for Dark Sector in Digital Extemes' studio. Representatives from the said site were accompanied by game director Steve Sinclair.

In one of their conversations, the director commented that the engine is causing some problems with their developers. "A lot of promises were made about the Unreal III engine, particularly on PS3. But as we see now, the time frames haven't been met and now a lot of games using it are being held up", explained Sinclair.

It should be remembered that Epic Games recently had a similar problem with Silicon Knights' Too Human. What happened: Silicon Knights is currently suing Epic Games because the developer claims that Epic is keeping the good copy of the engine for itself and those being issued to licensees are nothing but unusable.

IGN has uploaded a pair of new Dark Sector videos, and we've got them here today for your viewing pleasure. Both videos feature the same footage, but Steve Sinclair, project lead for Digital Extremes and D3Publisher's Dark Sector, provides a running commentary on the second vid.

The video consists mostly of recently-mutated Hayden Tenno just walking around killing stuff. According to Sinclair, everybody in Dark Sector pegs Hayden as an enemy - humans think he's a monster, monsters think he's human - which is a very convenient setup for Hayden's "kill everything that moves" ideology. Heck, you'd be pissed off too if you just woke up to find you've mutated. Cool glaive, though.

Sinclair also talks a bit about some of the game's new features, like the special finishing moves. Apparently, flanking or surprising an enemy causes you to perform a cool finishing move. These moves will also change depending on what kind of enemy you're up against. The game's first boss also appears near the tail end of the vid, and Sinclair reveals that Hayden's next evolution will occur after players dispatch the first boss.

Check out the first video below. The one with the running commentary is behind the jump.

evil hand...

In a recent interview with IGN Steve Sinclair clarified several things regarding Dark Sector, and the concept changes the game has gone through throughout development.

In the interview he implies that not a lot really went into the sci-fi heavy setting that we first knew about. He explains that the sci-fi setting was born from a tech demo they did while they were waiting for the exact specs of the Xbox 360. He goes on to say that they really tried to stay flexible on the fictional backdrop that they wanted to do for the game.

As flexible as the backdrop was though during the process several things really resonated with them. For one thing they really want to "weird" the player out. Hence their decided shift to a more contemporary setting. His explanation:

the thing that started to resonate with us was that if everything else was weird, then the character is going to be much more mundane. So if you're in a spaceship with giant robots and you have some cool armor, you're going to just look like a part of the scenery...

...So what we're trying to do is put it in a more conventional setting so that the weird shit is far more strange and that when you come into it we can sort of gently ease people into the stranger elements

The game will focus a bit more on the telling a good story and imparting to the player what the protagonist is going through, than just giving the player a whole lot of action. Of course action will be there, but it will be a tool to serve the story. The gameplay should change to go along with the changes that the protagonist will experience.

When we earlier said that Dark Sector (X360, PS3) has undergone a lot of changes "judging from the screenshots" we knew right there and then that didn't quite satisfy your curiosity. And so today, we're sharing with you not screenshots, but a trailer for this rather eerie title.

While the game indeed shed off a lot of its sci-fi feel, it is good to know that developer Digital Extremes is keeping its mysterious and dark atmosphere. We already know that Hadden Tenno was tasked by government to look at a bio-engineering experiment gone wrong in Lasria. No less the game's director Steve Sinclair was the one to reveal the storyline and other aspects.

This trailer shows our hero Hadden in action, depicting how the guy uses his weapon. The trailer says, "An entire city dead. Its secrets unleashed." Ugh, we just felt the hair from the back of our necks rose...

Dark Sector

We've been abuzz over Digital Extremes' Dark Sector for the past few months now, with our collection of game images, and an interview from game director Steve Sinclair about the assortment of goodies you can expect when the game comes into the light this Fall, 2007...Wait, did we just say the release date? Bugger.

Oh well, it's one of the things you were gonna find out from this new Dark Sector trailer we just picked up, which also showcased what the game's gonna look like come launch. Displayed here are shots of the various settings and monsters you'll be running into (or away from) as Haden Tenno, assassin/gov't G-man/game hero. The bad news is that this trailer's too much on action - though it's a good time for those of us who'd wanna compare the in-game graphics shown here with the various screenshots we mentioned earlier. Have fun.

Dark Sector

A few days ago, Dark Sector's game director Steve Sinclair finally shed light on the storyline of the mysterious game heading to the Xbox 360 and PS3. It didn't take long for the folks over at Digital Extremes to churn out screenshots to go along with the revelations.

In the game, all eyes are on Haden Tenno, a hired assassin tasked to look into the experiments that have gone horribly wrong, causing humans and animals to morph into monsters.

Sinclair and the development team admitted that Dark Sector has undergone considerable changes to add more realism to the game's setting. And one way to confirm this is by simply looking at the new images below. Without a doubt, the graphical representation of the environment and characters has gotten less of the sci-fi feel and more of the realism that fans of next-gen games are clamoring for.
